Of 7,000 women studied, 92 per cent of those who were overweight had romped with a man.
Among “normal†sized women, the figure was 87 per cent.
The surprise results rubbish previous studies which concluded that chubby girls had a low libido, while skinny ones were more likely to be sexually active.
The results were the same even if women’s age, race and where they lived were taken into account.
Researchers also looked at how many partners women had, how often they had sex, when they became sexually active and whether they were gay or straight. But the only difference they found was that overweight women were more likely to have slept with a man.
Research leader Dr Bliss Kaneshiro, of the University of Hawaii School of Medicine, said: “These results were unexpected and we don’t really know why this is the case.
“Our analysis demonstrated that overweight women do not differ significantly in some of the measures of sexual behaviour compared to women of normal weight.
“This study indicates that all women deserve diligence in counselling on unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, regardless of their weight.â€
Slender
Oregon State University Prof Marie Harvey, who helped the investigation, said: “I was glad to see that the stereotype that says you have to be slender to have sex is just that — a stereotype.â€
The sexual histories of American women aged 15-44 were compared to their body mass index — a measure based on weight and height.
A BMI below 25 was “normal†and anything above was overweight for the study in journal Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
In a previous study, the team showed that overweight women were more likely to have an unplanned pregnancy. "
