Thought it was pretty dull in the most part.

Few positives all the same...Wilson was surprisingly decent - stronger and more assured. Carroll bagged a goal. Maxi can still rattle the net and Suarez is just sheer brilliant, what i love about him is the way he treats every match in the same fashion whether it's Man United or Exeter City, just a class act.

On the negative side of things, our two(young) full backs looked a little lost, Henderson is still very meh in my view - he's a fucking weird one to work out and Carroll's touch is still similar to that of a Sunday league striker.

Anyway, fuck it, we're into the next round.

You didnt see the game same as me. I thought Robinson had a very good game. Flannagan was indeed poor last night.

Our shape was dreadfully disjointed and contributed to an ugly spectacle. There was no real rhythm to our play or our attacks. As per usual, the non-contributing members of the side just plodded it around until one of our better players could pick it up and produce something out of nothing.

Hollywood Adam is really starting to piss me off too.

Thought Robinson looked good though.
It wasn't that ugly. We passed the ball around well enough and scored the goals. We've played a million times worse in these games in the past, sometimes at home too. It was never going to be Barca-esque, these games never are, but I agree we need to get the system right and the balance. If we can get Bellamy it'll go a long way to addressing our lack of movement and pace, I really don't want to see us play flat with Carroll and Suarez unless there is a bit of movement in the centre of the park and outwide. FTR, I though Spearing did well again.

I thought Carroll looked like he'd found his level for long periods last night. He scored though, and we won. Onwards and upwards.

andy carroll was excruciating unil he got thor's hammer out for the goal -- absolutely excruciating. the other goals wouldn't have happened without suarez.

Henderson looks good but there's no end product. The only thing I remember him do is running into the box and falling over.
I'm a bit concerned about Henderson but it's early days. I think he lacks the pace to be a wide player and some of his play out there is too predictable, too quick to go on the outside, flicks it inside the defender and he's too slow to chase the ball. His delivery can be good though and he's got two good feet, but unless he starts stamping his authority a bit and demanding the ball more and doing something with it when he has it, I'm still failing to see the initial benefit of him being in the side, there just seems to be a distinct lack of any 'edge' with him at present. Hopefully it will come though.

set up the first goal
And "secondary pass" for second goal - a simple, but well-timed ball to Suarez who then squared for Maxi.
Yeah, I too only saw the goals, but it looked to me like he had a fair part to play in the first two

A bit harsh to write of our young defenders considering there were three of them in the back four, and the fourth player is hardly our best at organising the defence.

and i don't see first team players in either of those fullbacks.
Are you surprised?

They're just kids, they've got plenty of growing yet to do (figuratively)
Hahahaha I never even thought of that.
Kenny - 'Ok Martin i need you to organise the defence'
Skrtel - *mouth open string of dribble from lower lip* 'I do a defence?'

I missed the game, but managed to catch the highlights. A lot of our good moves seemed to involve Henderson - how does that match up with him being shit?

Also, I'm curious... a lot of posters on here earlier this summer were suggesting we don't need to buy any fullbacks because Flannagan and Robinson can cover. Has that view changed at all since then?

At the moment they are not first team player though are they? They are kids learning their trade

Henderson looks like a 'slow burn' I'd concerned but for his touch, control, movement and one touch passing. Was also pleased with his crossing except the cross which he should have played along the ground. Henderson looks like he is easing himself into the side, he is certainly improving with every match.

The highlights didn't really do justice to his ability to look like a passenger for large parts of the game. He looks Cheyrou esque at times, great feet but struggles to get involved.

I missed that last bit, I think Robinson looks good enough, not sure where the criticism stemmed from last night, Flanno looked a bit shaky though, which is worrying after his mistake against Sunderland, half the battle is how players react to mistakes, he looked short of confidence at times last night and gave the ball away alot.

something's wrong with carroll. all that shouting and berating of his team mates was laughable after the mountain of fuck ups he accrued throughout the game. he looks really really pissed off. the hope is that this is somehow holding him back.

Carroll looked quite unhappy last night, lumbered about clumsily quite a lot. I do worry about him, he needs to step up a gear. What a thunderous shot though. That'll get him a few goals this season alone.

Henderson, I'm not sure what to make of him. If i'm honest, bar the occasional run last night, he looked awful. I've never seen this kid before, so I don't know what to expect, exactly what type of player is he meant to be? Last night he was wasteful and completely out of confidence and really didn't look happy either, maybe he's finding adapting to a new life at Liverpool hard? He needs to pick himself up, get some confidence. Maybe coming on towards the end of a game will benefit him more? I'm not trying to knock Henderson, I just honestly don't know what to expect from him.

henderson strikes me as a 'houghton' or a 'ljungberg' i.e. they wont dribble past players but they can fit into a passing team due to their passing and movement. I think henderson is doing 'okay' the guy has just turned 21 and we have played 3 games this season. sound the alarm bells after 10 games if nothing changes.

You dont HAVE to mention him in every single post.

Carroll:

He does look mightyly frustrated out there. I think that's partially due to his lack of fitness, but also that the team is playing hoofball with him. The lad can pass, and can control the ball. I think his reaction to the goal last night said it all - he expects it from himself. I hope he can get into shape and reach his full potential with us.

Henderson:

Not sure what to think yet. I know Ryan rated him highly when we signed him, and the talent is there to see. He seems to either be playing as if he's walking on glass, or not settled yet. The confidence isn't there but that being said, he's involved in some nice plays and I think we need to give him a few more games before getting remotely worried. 21, starting for one of the biggest clubs in Europe ... It is a step up and not every player can make that switch immediately.

not a scoring comparison, I meant not looking overly flashy with regards to playing style.

He's just a kid, he'll be fine. He's younger than Cleverley.
We just need to show patience.

Could it be that Henderson is essentially a central midfielder and not a right winger
I think whats more likely is that we were expecting a 17m player and got a 4m player who may turn into a 17m player eventually.
We need to show patience because this kind of signing is the kind that teams make with a long term vision.

bale looked a bit lost at spurs when he joined. he's now the greatest player to ever play the game. do the math.

Why is Carroll unfit?

He's got a full preseason behind him and we're a couple games into the season already.

i dont think he is.

Lets give Henderson time to settle at a new club and develop before making a judgement. There are loads of knee jerk reactions on here, but a 90% pass complition away to Arsenal is good in which ever way you look at it.

He created 4th most chances in the league last year and should be given time to fullfill his potential. This could potentially be a risky 13 mill signing, but he has all the attributes to be a very good player. Needs confidence and will only get better. Has got a very good "engine" aswell and seems to always be on the move.

Re Carroll, think he was a bit frustrated with the service. Only saw him have a go at Henderson after he fucked up a cross. You could understand him though, we seem to hit a lot of hoofed crosses towards him, when we should hit them hard and with pace.
He's obviously a bit frustrated with himself as he knows how good he can be and was for Newcastle, and that it has taken a while to find the sharpness and form.

Hopefully the goal will do him the world of good and he'll kick on from here.
