Close. It was actually just down the road from Cologne in Bonn which, in those days, was still (and amazingly) the capital of what was West Germany, I imagine because of Herr Adenauer. I spent a year working in a bookshop there before going to university to study Modern and Medieval German and French. When my new Director of Studies heard where I'd spent the previous year, that quote was more or less the first thing he said. I never knew its origin until now, so thanks for that info. 😎

There wasn't much Medieval stuff involved TBH - 1 term's worth of Medieval German in my case. I could have chosen more but didn't find it interesting enough.

My German's OK (the first letter I wrote in 2021 was in German to an old college friend from Bavaria) but not what it was in those days. During my year in Germany LFC beat Moenchengladbach in the two-legged final of what's now the Europa League to win our first European trophy (I wasn't able to get to the game in Germany much to my frustration) and before the first leg I was on a train between Offenbach and Frankfurt when this friendly German guy asked me who I thought would win the game.
