Encouraging the Sturridge

As Captain he would have to think of the team, and it shows confidence in him. Fourth place is almost out of reach, why not experiment and see what happens.

Because it isn't (quite) out of reach yet, because even without that we still want and need to finish as high in the league as possible for reasons of (a) prize money and (b) European qualification, and because we're in a European semi-final. For all these reasons we can do without f@rting around over team selections.

What do you call Sundays team? It was experimental and paid off.

If only he played an entire season leading our line he could actually become a legend.

Sport Football Daniel Sturridge
Liverpool FC: How Sturridge is better than Rush, Owen and Suarez

Striker's goal stats are up with Reds elite

Sturridge's goalscoring stats for Liverpool compare with some of the best strikers in the club's history
A question about Daniel Sturridge’s performance at Bournemouth was enough to rile Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp but the striker’s headed effort at the Vitality Stadium puts him in illustrious company among Reds goalscoring royalty.
Sturridge has been forced to fend off a barrage of various brickbats himself in recent months with criticisms over his injury record and examinations of his commitment to the cause as he worked to get himself fully fit.

Certainly less than 100 Premier League career starts seems a particularly low total for a 26-year-old international who has been playing at the top level from the start.
But there’s one thing you can’t deny, when Sturridge is on the field, his record stands up with the very best.

He will now be looking for another Merseyside Derby goal on Wednesday night as he aims to reach the 50-mark for the Reds.
If Sturridge finds the net against Everton it will be in his 87th game for the club and he will have got to the milestone in fewer matches than Luis Suarez (91 games), John Aldridge (92), Michael Owen (93), Robbie Fowler (94), Kenny Dalglish (99) and Ian St John (111).

The only post-War frontmen to have plundered their half century quicker are Albert Stubbins (77 games), Roger Hunt (79) and Fernando Torres (84).
When Sturridge registered against the Cherries it took him to 49 goals in 86 matches – an identical record to Fowler’s.
Robbie Fowler shares the same strike-rate as Daniel Sturridge
Goal totals for other Liverpool strikers after 86 games that fall short of Sturridge’s total include: Ian Rush (48), Owen (47), Suarez (43), Dalglish (41) and St John (40).
Just three post-War players had netted more times for the Reds at the same stage of their Anfield careers: Hunt and Stubbins both had 55 while Torres had 51.
It remains to be seen how Klopp utilises Sturridge in the long term given his emphasis on hard-pressing and whether the player’s body will cope with such demands but his numbers to date stack up with the greats.

Like Gerrard, who bitched with the press when he had to play RM under Rafa?

Where did I say Gerrard doing that was the action of a captain?

And putting Gerrard and Studge in the same bracket is a horrible injustice to arguably our greatest ever player who on more occasions that I can remember dragged us to a trophy.

We should only have a captain when Klopp decides to stop screaming from the sidelines or when his throat doesn't feel too good.

Yeah, but Houllier made Gerrard captain when Hyppia was the obvious captain in the side and well before SG had dragged us to anything. But who's to say whether that wasn't a masterstroke, helping SG become the force for us that he was?

I think he would have been that force regardless.

I don't see a single attribute in Studge that would make him a good captain.

WTAF??

Ya lets give the captains armband to a stroppy sulker when he doesn't get his own way.

What a truly awful idea.
You've got some weird agenda against Sturridge, or maybe just a desire to go against the grain, so your opinion doesn't hold much salt in this matter anyway, but providing players with responsibility and seeing how they react is a great way to gauge where they are and potentially develop them further.

Giving him the armband for a game or two isn't going to hurt the team, but it could very well see Sturridge mature as a player in this team, which would be a massive bonus for everyone.

The entire premise of the thread was that he had you muppet.

Well the thread is as laughable as your post.

Studge will be injured again no doubt, I would guess it will be after England get dumped out of the Euros though so we should offload him before then.

I haven't got an agenda against Studge at all. If he stay fit for the whole season I would keep him but he's never going to do that so I want him gone. Most people agreed with that sentiment at the height of his reoccurring injuries as long as we got a good fee for him which I've never doubted we will. So I'm hardly going against the grain, I just stick to my view unlike others who yo yo between keep him and get rid.

Milner is vice captain and should have the arm band for the rest of the season, giving it to a player for a game or two devalues the whole idea of the arm band.

Studge has done f*ck all to warrant the arm band this season.

And if he needs an armband to mature and develop then their we have bigger problems with him.

I don't think you understand the concept of developing players, they don't just emerge from the academy as a resolute professional, again, just look at Gerrard, if you give a player responsibility, they grow. Sure he's a bit sulky and self centered, but do you think that'll change if you forever chastise the player and deny him the opportunity to prove his worth?

You most certainly have an agenda against Sturridge, every chance you get you're saying we should sell him, so I don't know how you can claim otherwise. The fact is he's currently in the best shape we've seen him in in two years, and whilst it might be another false dawn, if you're the optimist, and I am, you might be thinking Klopps approach to his fitness might be working, after all he's done it before with Gundogan, and the signs so far are promising for Sturridge.

I can understand being dubious, but really what have we got to gain by selling him? We won't get much for him, probably under £20million, and there's no way we'll replace his quality for that, even if he only does 20 games. And as for those "yo yoing", that's a bit disingenuous, I think the only time people were really serious about selling him was when that rumoured £50million bid was mentioned, that figure is never going to happen though.

How can someone complain about having Sturridge as captain while England has been lead by a bunch of semi cunts since Tony Adams?

If it's that overrated, why bother picking Sturridge out for it?
Same thought hit me when I wrote that but I'm not in anyway campaigning for him to get the armband, I'm just saying that giving it to him will most likely not lead to a significant change positively or negatively.

Fair point, but what kind of money do you expect to get for him? Who do you expect to buy him? Chelsea? Nope, going to spend ludicrous money this Summer. City? Nope, see previous. Arsenal? They won't fork out big coin. Man United? Not a hope. That leaves maybe Spurs. I wouldn't sell to them for anything less than stupid money. Why strengthen a rival? I doubt any of the big or rich European clubs will be in for him. Say we got 20 million for him. Who do we get? Remember team fork out 12 million for the likes of Fabio fucking Borini, so 20 million is not going to get us much in this market. All well and good saying he's injury prone and not worth wages etc. but at the same time if he's fit even 70% of the time it's better he's with us than a team we're competing with.

Same reason he brought "semi-cunt" England captains into it. Players like Ferdinand, Gerrard and Terry. Three of the best and most successful players in recent history, and in Terry the most successful captain in Chelsea history.

ie he hasn't got a fucking clue what he's talking about, and simply spouts shit most of the time.

Seeing as Lucas has been captain for a few games, I really dont see a problem with Sturridge having the armband for a game or two if Milner isnt playing.
