All our key players have signed new deals. They’ve wouldn’t have done so without some kind of expectation that the squad would be improved. Especially when you consider our bonus related contracts.

They are just taking the money. Salah and VVD aside, where are they gonna go?

Part of the handover from Edwards to Ward will probably be how to use this platform. 😛

Just last year, Athletic had this to say:
Julian Ward has earned Liverpool promotion but Michael Edwards is going nowhere
[article]
Some will inevitably jump to conclusions and view Liverpool’s festive reshuffle as about succession planning. For the first time in the club’s history, they have an assistant sporting director after The Athletic exclusively revealed the promotion of Julian Ward from his previous role as loan pathways and football partnerships manager.

However, this isn’t about Michael Edwards grooming his successor. Ward isn’t suddenly the next in line to the throne. It wouldn’t be either fair or accurate to put that on his shoulders.

At the age of 41, Edwards, who has always shunned the limelight, remains as committed as ever to working alongside Jurgen Klopp to mastermind more glorious chapters for the Premier League champions.

Sure, but it's not like they can't agitate for transfers if things don't go well. Why not take a pay raise now?

I'd like to see some real evidence we are rebuilding our squad with sufficient speed to win the race against time. I'm happy with Konate and Jota but it still feels like we are moving too slow.

Sure but the club could also refuse. They could’ve seen how things are in 18 months and signed for free for another team. That would’ve made up for any lost income from signing now.

I agree it feel too slow but I don’t think I need to know the plan. Nor should the rest of the world know. For all we know we had planned to move on firmino 12 months ago and Mané right now. But things haven’t worked out. As beamy has put, we may be waiting to clear some final payments for current players before reentering agreements for the next 3 players we want.

Just don’t stress about it. It’s out of our control so try not to get worked up over it.

To be honest, these things work in cycles and wouldn’t care less normally with any other manager at any other point in LFC’s history but just with that Klopp’s 3yr timeline ticking, just felt like ths opportune time to borrow and invest but it’s not to be especially state of club finances across Europe at the moment.
In addition, when a manager gives an exit timeline, the last 18 months often leads to a downing of tools well before. If we could give Klopp a year sabatical and have him back for a long rebuild then rather have him take it early in say 2022-23 and welcome back for 2023-24 with open arms and not bother with any big transfers till then. Save all our cash for Klopp’s second coming.

It is what it is. But hard not to feel we are squandering a chance to define an era in the club and the league.

The term “proof of concept”concept to mind when I think of how FSG has handled us. Plenty of investment but not enough to really scale. Prove we can win but not for the long term. Demonstrate value to future investors or owners.

could be
signing the key players to long term contracts, preparing for a sale the next couple of years

Yeah... but who are they going to sell to and what sort of horrors will they bring?

5 times Michael Edwards struck gold

1. Philippe Coutinho's sting in the tail
- Edwards included a unique clause that prevented Barcelona from signing Liverpool players until 2021 without paying a huge premium of £80million on top of any agreed figure.

2. Takumi Minamino at a complete steal
- Edwards' connections meant Liverpool learnt of a release clause in Minamino's Salzburg contract before any other club.

3. Try before you buy with Ozan Kabak
- Edwards struck a deal that saw Liverpool loan Kabak for just £1million for the season. Crucially, the loan deal included an option - not an obligation - to buy the player for £18million at the end of the campaign.

4. Selling Rhian Brewster for £23.5million
- Liverpool sold Brewster to Sheffield United for £23.5million. The figure isn't a huge amount, but it includes a 15 per cent sell-on fee that becomes active if the Blades sell the forward.

5. Offloading Jordan Ibe for £15million
- Ibe failed to score a single goal in his first season on the south coast, despite featuring 26 times in all competitions. The following season the Englishman made 38 appearances and managed two goals and then three in 24 in the 2018/19 campaign. Ibe made just four appearances in his final season at the club before leaving on a free. He was eventually picked up by Derby but made just one appearance before being released. He is currently without a club.

I suspect the reason we haven't done much this window is because Edwards has effectively downed tools for some time.

Probably spent his afternoons making pizzas or surfing Internet forums instead of calling up clubs and hawking Origi to them

What about contract renewals? The likely hood is Klopp, and Edwards were given two stark choices, renew contract and eat up your budget on transfers or sell players plus what ever is in the budget. They chose to renew contracts. FSG are not willing to stretch the clubs finances, probably don't want another title as it means paying big bonuses to players.

Yeah, thats just plain stupid. IF our success brings a higher wage bill, bring it on.

Which hood is more likely? Robin or Little Red Riding?

I'm told by a fellow Red who follows Tw@tter (I don't) that hints are floating around on there that Edwards may stay after all.

Are they seriously labelling the Minamino signing as a time Edwards struck gold? He should be sacked for that alone, if anything. Forget all the good he's done in the past.

So you don't think that 2 x CL finals and 2 seasons of >95 points in the PL proved the concept?

Another question - how much has Klopp contributed to Edwards looking good? I've read that Klopp's player knowledge is astonishingly good. Also, Klopp, more than probably any other manager, is insistent on the specific type of player needed for his system.

Or vice versa?
