Chilean football is enjoying its best generation of talented footballers since Salas and Zamorano led La Roja's attacking line in the 1998 World cup. The Chilean national team boasts excellent talents in midfield and attack, players such as Arturo Vidal, Gary Medel, Jorge Valdivia, Mauricio Isla, Mathias Fernandez, Humberto Suazo and above all Barcelona's Alexis Sanchez, most of them already playing in Europe's and South America's top leagues. But in Chile itself a new name is on every football fan's lips, a talented young forward who is leading Universidad de Chile in its great run both in the local league and Copa Sudamericana.
21 year old starlet Eduardo Vargas has been in stunning form in 2011. The talented forward has already scored 22 goals and provided 11 more assists (in all competitions) for La U, who are currently leading the local league on a 9 point margin and +24 goal difference, still undefeated after 15 rounds. Vargas has particularly excelled in the Copa Sudamericana, where he scored 6 in 7 appearances so far, including a brace in La U's emphatic 4:0 away win against Flamengo. This Friday they will host the decisive second leg of the quarter-final against Argentina's Arsenal, after winning the first match in Buenos Aires 2:1, with Vargas scoring the first.
Vargas has been destined for greatness since he started playing professionally for Cobreloa in 2006, when only 16 years old. He impressed with Chile's youth teams and was dubbed "the new Alexis Sanchez"(who also started his career with Cobreloa) but failed to make his breakthrough as a senior player, until this season. His explosive form did not escape the attention of Chile's National Coach Claudio Borghi, who has made Vargas a first team regular in La Roja's attacking line, the latter already scoring his first international goals against Spain and Peru.
Vargas in an energetic attacker endowed with great acceleration and pace who bases his game on mobility. He has a knack for cutting inside from wide positions, incredible finishing skills (by both feet and head), natural ability to maneuver himself around defenders with his dribbling, and is also a clever and hard working player. While technically immaculate, Vargas lacks a bit of the creativity that characterizes Alexis Sanchez. He is more direct in his playing style (with some resemblance to Milan's Pato), and is a versatile attacker. He feels most comfortable playing as a second striker but is able also to play the on the wing, especially the right flank.
This year Vargas has been proving that he is one of the biggest talents in the world for his age, and that he is ready for an overseas move. An estimated price tag of around 7-8m Euros is unlikely to deter AC Milan, although Turkish sides Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor, alongside La Liga's Villareal, are also reportedly in the race for his signature.
