Downing

There's no question that we face a harder time of it,Mark. BUt I'm convinced there are good players out there and that the incessant hunt for Downing is based on caution and a total failure in scouting for good players and an inability to negotiate and sell Liverpool.

Wijnaldum just went for 6 million Euros to PSV Eindhoven, apparently. He's not a out and out winger, so the example isnt that good.

But CL or not, no one is going to tell me that Liverpool isnt as attractive as PS fucking V.

Is there a danger, of course. 'Premiership proven' hangs in the air like some bloody aura, and it is important. But it isnt the be-all and end all. I hope we can get the best quality possible, and I dont know if that's Downing.

(This ist to say he's crap, because he isnt)

It's also a bit frustrating when some people jump on the idea that we can do better as some attack on a Premiership proven English player in favour of some 'fancy dan forry-ner' and that they should go back to FM.

What's this "McAdam" bollocks all about anyway?
Sorry if it offends you, I'll stop when he joins.
McDonalds (fat) + Scottish + Adam = McAdam

It's a less funny version of Lurch, Brains, Anti-Brasilian etc, but not as derogatory IMO.
Adam's a good player,Modo. All things considered he would be a good addition.

The only problem is getting another midfielder before a winger a CB and a LB (maybe) is a bad idea

I voted Aquilani but let's not derail this thread and I agree, we should be looking to strengthen other areas considering that we already bought Hendo.

Sid Lowe just said we have a very good chance in signing Mata.

Also, the Adam fat jokes are getting tiresome and annoying.

Heard it on talksport, how credible is Lowe?

He's got very good contacts in Spain.

Nice.

Ha, the old Don Hutchinson syndrome?
The very same.

The worst one of the lot though was when Pleat surpassed himself by referring to "Steve McMenamin". That was one name you wouldn't have thought anyone would mix up with another, but Pleat found a way. This was years before we began to call the player McMoneyman, so the Luton Kerbcrawler had no excuse.

Sid Lowe - #LFC have a definite interest on Mata. But, factors (doubts on adaptability) may decide how far the club might push to sign him.

Basically, we're interested but it might be difficult to sign him. Covering all scenarios.

Probably been asked before, but is mata the type to stick tothe wing, or one to come inside?
He usually comes inside for some tea and biscuits.

Seriously though, he's like David Silva. He likes to cut inside and provide through balls to the strikers. He can play behind the striker as well (AM position).

Deals for Downing and Adam no nearer to completion but #LFC still in talks for both players

the delay is because things haven't gone quite to plan for #LFC this window. Some confusion as to what next

I have given up trying to put dates on these deals. Liverpool prepared to make other clubs sweat a bit, in order to lower fee

Good.

Remember how long we were haggling with Ajax over Suarez fee.

it'll all work out in the end, this is kenny dalglish we're talking about

Don't really know where to put this but i'll try here saying as it's about transfers and Downing is a target.

Tony Barrett

The size of the rebuilding job that Kenny Dalglish faces has become yet more apparent as the Liverpool squad get ready to return to pre-season training with only a single recruit among their ranks, but several players who are surplus to requirements.

Dalglish had hoped to welcome a batch of new players to the club’s Melwood training ground but only Jordan Henderson, the £16 million signing from Sunderland, has arrived.

Moves for Stewart Downing, the Aston Villa winger, and Charlie Adam, the Blackpool midfield player, remain in the pipeline but are no nearer to completion, although Liverpool are in regular contact with both clubs.

Before the end of last season, Dalglish said that the weeks leading up to pre-season would be “very important” to his squad-rebuilding plans as he looked to do the “good business” that he felt was necessary to give Liverpool the best possible chance of regaining a place in the top four of the Barclays Premier League.

But having been outbid for Connor Wickham by Sunderland, outmuscled by Manchester City for Gaël Clichy and beaten to Phil Jones by Manchester United, Dalglish is having to reassess his options with less than six weeks to go before the resumption of the Premier League.

The determination of John W. Henry, the club’s principal owner, to adhere to the principles of the Financial Fair Play rules means that Dalglish does not have significant transfer funds to fall back on, making it all the more essential that Liverpool shift at least some of the deadwood from a squad that has fallen short of expectations in the past two seasons.

The problem is that those players available for transfer are attracting little interest, and Alberto Aquilani, Philipp Degen, Nabil El Zhar, Emiliano Insúa, Paul Konchesky and Brad Jones, who were out on loan last season, will return to training today.

Aquilani, who was signed from Roma for a fee in the region of £17 million in July 2009, had been hoping to turn a one-year loan deal at Juventus into a permanent transfer but the Serie A club have shown no interest in signing the Italy midfield player on his existing wages.

Liverpool have moved swiftly to replace Sammy Lee, who lost his job as assistant manager last week: Kevin Keen will leave West Ham United to become first-team coach at Anfield. Keen’s appointment on a three-year deal is likely to result in Steve Clarke assuming the post that Lee vacated.

“I’m delighted that Kevin is joining us to work alongside Steve Clarke coaching the first-team squad,” Dalglish said. “He is highly respected in the game and will be a great addition to our technical staff.”

The manager added that Steven Gerrard is making good progress from a groin operation that led to him missing the final three months of last season. “He deserves a bit of luck on the injury front,” Dalglish said.

Maybe we should get Sade to close the deal.

Not very smooth,Neil.

That article is nearly as hysterical as this forum has been. While it's been frustrating, no one has started buying yet, so why the tension and worry surrounding us? City, Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea are all yet to open their wallets, Arsenal are losing players left right and centre (well reportedly anyway), yet there are no questions being raised about any of them. They're all returning to training with the same squads. Everyone knows we need to offload alot of deadwood and that will inevitably play it's part because of wages, agreements over contract terminations and finding someone daft enough to buy them. It'll take time, unfortunately. Patience isn't a virtue in this sport, we all know that, but I'd be flapping more if it was the last week of August.

L'Equipe are reporting Aston Villa are interested in David Ngog. Could he be used as a pawn in the Stewart Downing deal?

Point being ? That we should move faster ? Buy more ? How about those players on our books (a lot) we need to move on ? Do we buy before being assured of unwanted players being found a new home ? It's a balancing act. And there are 6 weeks to go to the end of the domestic market and 8 weeks until the end of the Euro market !
