[/quote]I thought Reira was excellent in his first season and probably played above his level but he did have Alonso, Maschreano, Gerrard and Torres all playing to his right.
He was a tidy, technically sound player who kept the ball well and moved it on nicely. Of course when the following season went pear shaped he was found wanting big time.

I had hopes that Downing might do a similar job for us this season but the quality of the first team has diminished somewhat since Reira's first season and instead of being a bit player akin to Reira he was presumably expected to be a star 🙁

I'm not sure I ever trust the "would he get in someone else's team" yardstick, because different teams need different things at different times (apart from Ryan's patented 'world class players' which all teams could always use). There isn't a team in the world that fills every position with a WCP, and there are plenty of Utd players that Liverpool fans might say they'd have no use for. Riera gave us excellent balance, and we held the ball and broke better from defence when he came into the side. He wasn't a world beater, but he was part of sides that beat Real Madrid 4-0, the Scum 1-4, and starred in a number of other fine performances in a year when we came second with 80+ points and played some of the best football I've seen from a LFC team in the PL era. I liked him.

We deserve better IMO, but fuck me he was better than Downing, & the fact I'd stick him straight back in says how poor Downing has been.

For the record, I honestly thought Downing was much better than he has turned out to be & have been very disappointed to have been proven wrong.

To be fair to Riera, like Yossi, he invoked the patented Rafa hex that season. He wasn't getting a game when it was clear we were missing him badly. This led to his ill-advised pop in the media, but you could understand. He'd had a very good season (as had Yossi) and suddenly they were sidelined. And we were losing.

They just said on the radio Carroll has the best aerial duel record out of anyone in the Premiership. With better supply & better around him to take advantage of second balls that could really tell.

Its not just optimism, Im tryin to be realistic. Ok we spent a lot of money and we should be higher up the table. But we've virtually had complete squad over haul in last twelve months, and more so in last six months. We are tryin to play football the way its supposed to be played for the first time in years and lets be honest we have been very very unlucky not to have won a lot more games than we have. Its just a matter of time before it all clicks into place, i really believe that.

One thing i Will say is that we probably need new striker in January to help take pressure off.

I haven't quite lost faith in Downing, as I said in my post, last season Villa were a counter attacking side and it suited his game, as we saw with that run and shot in his first game, he was flying on the break. We're playing a more patient build up and while it's easy on the eye, it's not been great in breaking down stubborn defences, teams just stand off and put men behind the ball.

I also seem to remember when Pennant was here, criminally him and Crouch rarely played together, it was baffling (however average he was), it seems the same now with Carroll, last week Downing made way for Carroll. That's just counter productive.
