Diamond formation

Would it work for us 4-4-2 in a diamond midfield once aquilani replaces Lucas?.I think gerrard on the left like England team kuyt on the right masch in front of back four and aquaman behind two forwards torres and yossi (till we get another world class striker).I really don't fancy our current formation with torres alone upfront its frustrating for him and for the fans .The diamond formation does have its limitations as it leaves the back four with less protection but it is working for Chelsea just fine why not for us ? .

Heh, so you want to give our horrendous defence even less protection than it already has?

I think you've answered your own question there. Besides, we don't have the players for it - not by a long shot.

Gerrard is a fantastically versatile player, but he's no left winger. We've only one player who can make that claim, Albert Riera, and when he's fit he should stop being fucked around with and start every game he can. He's not that fantastic, but he gives our team balance, and he was a little piece of the puzzle that made us play some great stuff last year. You cannot solely rely on fullbacks for width, especially when you don't have fantastic, on form, pacy one v one CBs.

Let's see how Aquilani actually fits in before we go building a team around him and shunting Gerrard around. The more logical solution, if he was crucial, and can't partner Mascherano himself, is simply to move Gerrard to CM, Aquilani to AM.

Either way, I'm pretty excited about improving our midfield.

As long as we score more than we concede we still win the games .I feel aquilani and gerrard can switch positions just like lampard and ballack so one drops back to help mascherano when under attack.

we haven't the wide players to play that.

we have potentially 3 of the best midfielders in the world in masch, gerrard and aquaman.

rafa's built his team with this 4231 that will accommodate all 3 of them with torres upfront.

we need to be in with a fighting chance in january to see if this team can win things using this formation with these players staying fit.

if we get knocked out of europe and find ourselves too far behind once aquaman is up and running then i think its too late as imo masch will leave in the summer. it is then that rafa will have a choice of whether to stick with the formation or drop gerrard into centre midfield and use the masch money to buy a world class attacker to play alongside and when necessary cover for torres
