• Reds want Luuk de Jong - agent
Liverpool invested heavily in the squad last summer but, while they have already won the Carling Cup and could add the FA Cup this weekend, they have fallen some distance short of their target of returning to the Champions League.
Further spending is expected this summer to bolster their top-four chances for next season, with Werner confident the club is taking strides forward.
"This season did not go as we had hoped in the Premier League, but we also have visited Wembley three times, and we have won the League Cup," Werner told Goal.com. "We are confident that we will be making further progress in the future, and we are hard at work identifying transfer targets to help us continue to improve the squad."
Asked about reported interest in USA international Dempsey, Werner replied: "We never talk publicly about our transfer targets. However, any team would be lucky to have Clint Dempsey playing on their squad."
Director of football Damien Comolli has already paid the price for the team's struggles this season, but Werner underlined that Kenny Dalglish's job is not under threat.
"We have great confidence in Kenny," he said. "He enjoys our full support."
