Degen told to do one, politely.

Roy Hodgson today confirmed that full-back Philipp Degen can look for a new club.

The Swiss international has struggled to make an impact since arriving at Anfield from Borussia Dortmund in July 2008.

"We have had an amicable conversation with Philipp and he wants to play football," Hodgson told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"We won't stand in his way and he is free to look for another club."

Good news. A real waste of space who was probably up there as one of Rafa's worst signings.

I wonder what his cost per minute on the pitch was... painfully high I would imagine.

Surplus to requirements but a decent player who should find a club without difficulty. I thought he showed some good touches on occasion.

Does this mean we need to get a new rightback to backup Johnson?

Or are Carragher, Kelly and Darby sufficient?

I guess a fee is too much to ask for? what a waste of time he was.

I like how he is moaning about not playing. its not the club's fault he's broken. did he mistake Woy for a doctor?

A disaster from start to finish.
Cheers Rafa, yet another dud free transfer.

I hope Kelly gets the chance as back up to Johnson. I really don't rate Darby though.

Dunno Mark. Kelly seems to have injury problems too, and if Johnson gets injured will we see Carragher at rightback again? Pros and cons to that, but it would be good to see our rightback do a *bit* of attacking.

Not that I'm unhappy with Degen being told to leave, just wondering what options we have at RB, that's all.

Martin Kelly will be perfect back up. Its not as if degen played enough games when johnson was injured to be considered a back up! Another bosman with high(ish) wages off the wage bill, fine by me!

I don't know whether he's injury prone, it just seemed like a freak injury, and quite a bad one.. I think it's about priorities though, there are other areas that need tackling, and if that means Kelly and Carra as cover, then so be it.

Would love to see Martin Kelly make the breakthrough this season though, hopefully play at least 10+ games in total.

Who is not impressed with Uncle Roy's tenure so far? It is in a different league to what I was expecting.

A couple of really really good signings, good news coming from the senior players we have to keep, and the right flotsum in the squad being moved on. 10/10 so far for Hodgson.

He now needs a left back and a centre mid (plus maybe another striker).

It's all Purslow, dontchaknow!

Darby looked light and frail anytime I watched him. Kelly on the other hand was very impressive during his limited playing time. I actually didn't mind Degen as much as others. Yeah he was a bit of a cunt but he always played with a smile on his face and clearly had pace and attacking instincts.

All in all it's a good decision to let him go. Get him off the wage bill and let Kelly cover Johnson.

We need to cut down our wage budget and the best way to do in is to get rid of these expensive second rate squad players. Kelly is good enough to be back up. And I believe his at least six times cheaper too.

Why does he need to tell Kyrgiakos twice? Is he not very clever?

Kyrgiakos will want to stay and fight for his place the first time around.
It'll get through to him the 2nd time.

Once is a risk, twice is suicidal.

While on the subject, got this from Tribal:

Liverpool are inviting offers for Greek defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos.

The People says Kyrgiakos is among names that top the 'For Sale' list as the Anfield money men are frantically trying to do deals to give manager Roy Hodgson more financial muscle to turn the club around.

Greece centre-half Kyrgiakos was landed on a free transfer by Rafa Benitez last summer but he is now being hawked round Europe for around £2.5million.

Good attacking instincts (except when Rafa tried him at RM, where he was hopeless - a lesson there for those who keep wanting to move Magic forward) but pub football standard defensively, which even in this day and age is a pretty fundamental failing for a fullback. He did what he could, but it wasn't enough. Good luck and goodbye. Someone in the Bundesliga will sign him.

I don't think he came on a free transfer at all but if we can get 2.5 million for him then we should!

We paid a couple of million for The Greek.

I think he (Kyrgiakos) signed a two year contract with us. Why don't we just keep him for one more season then release him at the end of it? He provides good backup.
