Gerrard has GREAT long-range pass. And I love how he can start an attacking move from deep inside our half, and then, because he has so much speed and stamina, run all the way forward and join the attack... When Gerrard plays CM, frankly, I don't miss Alonso at all.
Alonso does read the game better than almost anyone though, including Gerrard.

We're not winning the ball back because we're sitting deep, maintainging shape and waiting for other teams to "run in to the brick wall"

Roy's teams are more "counter attacking" where we have to offer up the space for the opposition to move in to. Benitez' teams were more about pressing the opposition & moving the ball quickly once we got it.

Masher suited Benitez system. Alonso was key because he was the one that could move the ball quickly in to dangerous spaces where Derraed & Torres had the opportunity to be at their most potent. Lucas was fine alongside Masher ifwe were the underdog & intent on soaking up pressure and forcing the opposition in to mistakes. Our 4-1 win at Old Trafford was the perfect example of that partnership at it's best.

Masher wouldn't do well in Roy's system because we don't press - which is the most important part of his game.

Masher isn't the sort of player who is going to listen to the instruction 'Do not press' - nor do I think Roy is actually telling players not to. We have seen pressing this season.

Masher would be doing just fine for us right now. And he is a large reason why we're not winning the ball back so easily, which is pressuring us to keep the ball.

I wasn't the biggest Mascherano fan but even I admit that he is exactly what we're missing. We give the ball away too easily and struggle to win back possession.

Mascherano is a pitbull and its diificult to find anyone else as good as him.

Give credit where its due. The way he left us leaves a bitter taste but that has nothing to do with his ability.

Spider - they signed him because he's one of the best in the world at his position, possibly the best.

You try to over analyse tactics. It's not that complicated.

the thing that alonso had over gerrard is he (alonso) had the ability to slow the game down, take the sting out of the opposition momentum. gerrard plays at a 100 mph all the time which is great and an asset rather than a flaw but it was great to have someone in the team with the ability to dictate the pace of the game, we miss that, especially away fom home.

was obvious that mash wouldn't establish himself in the barca team seeing as his passing is hit and miss. to think some people thought he was the better of the two in the alonso/mash combo. whatever.
Yeah, I mean look how easily we replaced Masher compared to Alonso.
we replaced alonso? when did that happen?
Croqualani.

I hate you guys everytime you mention Alonso, because honestly the thought that he once was ours and now he isn't makes me want to cry real salty tears.

He was a really classy operator and it's a shame Benitez fcuked him off as up until that point he looked committed to our cause and a player who could have finished his career here.

Now we have Lucas who is sure to.

When we had them all we had to do was improve on the wings....

--------------------Reina---------------------
Arbeloa-----Carragher----Agger-----------Riise
----------------------------------------------
-------------Mascherano----------------------
-------Alonso-------------Gerrard-------------
?-?----------------------------------------?-?
----------------Torres------------------------

Now we need a LB, a RB, 2 x CM (at least one of whom isnt a fucking coward).......OH AND THE FUCKING WINGERS STILL!

We need the likes of Suarez to come in up top, someone like Hazard on the wings, a good solid left back and 2 new centre mids, as Oncy says.

We all know who we'd like to sign, but in my experience of being a Liverpool fan we'll delude ourselves into thinking we'll sign these world class players and they'll come to us and instantly improve us. In reality we'll sign Routledge and Carlton Cole, we'll ship them out of the club in a year and the cycle of the worst value for money of any team ever will continue.

There's no reason to think genuine world class players will want to come here now. We've missed the right to tempt those kinds of players here. Our best chance is to have a superstar come through the ranks, or hope some idiot is stupid enough to come here and make a positive difference.

Our current level, no matter how much we don't want to admit it, is with the Lucas's and Poulsen's of this world.
If we picked up the two kids (Chamberlain and Jennings), Charlie Adam, Ryan Shawcross, Joey Barton and sold off any three or four to fund it we would be improved dramatically.
They arent Hollywood names, but they would all improve us

-----------------------------REINA-----------------------------
Kelly------------Shawcross------------Carragher-----------Aurelio
---------------------------------------------------------------
------------------Adam-------------Barton--------------------
--------------------------Gerrard-----------------------------
Jennings-------------------------------------------Chamberlain
-------------------------Torres--------------------------------

I know its crazy blue sky thinking and it wont happen and throwing in kids is a bad idea yadda yadda yadda, im just saying the step from SHIT to bitlessSHIT isnt a massive one that requires Ronaldinho, Saurez and fucking Jose Don Bigwhang.

defensive midfielder:

* win the ball
* give it (the ball) to the attacking players
* shield the defense
* add numbers to the attack when possible

sounds easy...yet we don't have a single player in the entire sqaud that can perform the role to a competent level.

That team wouldn't get back into the top 4, though. Not instantly anyway. I want us to sign Shawcross actually, as well as Chamberlain, Jennings, and pretty much everybody you've mentioned there, except Barton.

But we've been here before. There were people who thought Voronin would be a good solid signing, same with Pennant, Gonzalez, Jovanovic, every other fucking retard that's been proven to be garbage.

A general rule of thumb should be: if they've been at average sides their whole career, then they're probably average players. We can't keep signing average players, because we will become average. We have become average.

But now, now that we'll finish outside of the Champions League places for two seasons, and most likely the bottom half of the league this season, we've missed the boat on attracting stars to this club. We spent too long signing average players while we still had that lure. Well now that we're well and truly muck, we haven't got any right to demand top signings.

Suarez, Hazard, Coentrao et al would all be attracting interest from everywhere else, better teams. Why would the come here now? Tottenham have better players, Man Utd are Man Utd, Chelsea are Chelsea, Man City have stacks of money. They're the the types of teams we should be competing for players with, but with all bias aside, why would anybody want to come here now instead of any of those sides?

As it stands we'll be competing with the likes of Stoke, Bolton, Newcastle, Aston Villa for players. And that's about our level right now.

Stop that Barton talk Oncy.

I'd like a physical pacy DM who can actually press players. Please come back Masher.
I'd like a playmaker beside him to pull the strings i.e. Javi Martinez.
I'd like a pacy winger. i.e. Hazzard, AOC, Elia, Mata, Sanchez, anyone.
I'd like a partner for Torres, Llorente or Luis Suarez.
I'd like a LB or play Kelly there.

this team sheet just made me jizz my pants at its memory

I wonder if Kenny has identified Gerrard as the player to do this job; hence the sending off.

Gerrard did say in his autobiography that he admired Roy Keane's style of play.

Could Kenny have had the idea to turn Gerrard into a Souness/McMahon?

Only if we get a bloody good strike partner for Fernando.

It is possible that Dalglish is trying this, and this is possibly one way to extend Gerrard's career.

But I doubt he's interested now when he's the club's only real attacking threat after Torres.

The likes of M'Bia or Javi Martinez would not only give us lot more steel and strengths in midfield they'd also give us an advantage on set-pieces. And we could really use that.

We probably wouldn't need a new CB as much as long as we had a towering and strong defensive midfielder to help them out in the air.

I've just printed off a picture of Poulson and I'm taking it to the jaks so I can wipe my arse with it.

It's Poulsen not Poulson.

According to the papers though, we're only really in the market for attacking players.

YAY! 🙂
