Mascherano should be available by the end of the season!

There's a very good chance he'll only last one Season with Barca but he'll never ever come back to Liverpool.

I said when he left he'd be spending his time on the bench, I remember someone arguing otherwise.

Either of the Diarras from Madrid are open.

It's pretty clear,Roland.

Masher went to a club which already had a DM as good as he was, if not better.

Whether he stays for very long isnt certain.

But after the bullshit hewent on about his departure, there isnt a chance in hell he'd be willing to come back here.

Anita and Avvy has already said most of what there is to say.

Watching him play a few times already and he certainly looks cumbersome and clumsy alongside a lot of Barca's other players. Almost obstructing their attacking play at times it seems. He won't last long at Camp Neu is my bet and he'll probably then leave for Inter.

Would still love the bastard back, mind.

For like £5mil, that would be awesome.

I'd take him for 10M. He is proven world class but only for Liverpool! Serves him right for screwing us...

The central midifield is the engine room, and who you need there is very much down to how you play your game. Mascher is one hell of a player when it comes to closing down and destroy for the opposition, which is obviously not what Barcelona needs most. They need cms who is able to distribute the ball as they see so much of it anyway. Hence even Rafael Marques, the good CD looked more like a Barca CM than Mascher does. But that doesnt mean he wouldnt fit in in other teams. We were a very good place for him to play out his strengths, and somehow Rafa preffered Lucas on several occacions last season.

was obvious that mash wouldn't establish himself in the barca team seeing as his passing is hit and miss. to think some people thought he was the better of the two in the alonso/mash combo. whatever.

The last time I saw Mash play for Barca, his passing looked pretty spot on to me.

He may not be the most creative of players but his passing ability has always been greatly underrated in my opinion.

You'll still be burbling this garbage in your grave, won't you?

Meireles was considered Portugal's defensive midfielder in the WC. He is more than capable of playing the role and it would ensure we don't have to put up Lucas & Poulsen again.

That's OK if (a) the right team is picked and (b) it can then lay the groundwork for Meireles to go forward from DM when appropriate by imposing itself on games, as we did against the Chavs and have the quality to go on doing IMO.

Thanks, Sam.

He certainly seeemd to have a very attacking bent, though.

I watched all Portugal's games in the WC and I remember him making a few surging runs and on one occasion the commentator remarked that it was an adventurous run for a player considered more a more defensive midfielder.

I am convinced that a Meieles-Gerrard axis in CM would be a great start to build a team around.

I couldn't agree more. One of the things Roy said early on was that he saw Stevie as a CM and I was majorly encouraged by that, after our trials and tribulations in that area last season, as I was anticipating a Gerrard-Meireles combo in there which I thought could be mustard.

This whole situation is so reminiscent of last season, when Rafa seemed afraid to drop Lucas in favour of Aquilani. It's like Lucas is seen as the safe option somehow, even though results (and performances) with him there are generally shite.

Surely Roy is going to play Stevie and Ming together at *some* point?

Yeah, I mean look how easily we replaced Masher compared to Alonso.

we replaced alonso? when did that happen?

I thought mash was good at what he did but let's be honest he wasn't the best passer in the world and as such I have no idea why barca went for him.

Perhaps, but that doesn't vindicate your underrated view of Mascherano, because he could quite easily be shining for another club right now - just like he did for us for much of last season. This is why I think it's bizarre you never miss a trick to put the boot in over his footballing abilities.

I will say though with my 'holding a high line' rant the other day, mesh is the sort of defensive midfielder that would make that possible.

Was he? He has a knack of covering all areas of the pitch but I don't think he was labelled the DM of the team. I can't recall their world cup team sheets but I'd presume Tiago also played in midfield with him. Raul would have had licence to join in with the attacking players.

I think he could do a job in either role but I do prefer him as the advanced midfielder out of the two.

I wouldn't disagree, other than to point out that we *have* been using it pretty well recently, only against Wigan we didn't see enough of it for long periods.
