About Sahin and Tello.

1 - You know more about La Liga than anyone else on here, so I want to know about these kids.
2 - I value your opinion.
3 - You may have already done so in one of those other threads, but I'll be fucked if I'm going back through them.
4 - Thank you.

He has written about Tello and I'm sure he'll word it again. The general consensus was bags of pace but guilty of relying on the 'kick and run' approach. Barca favour Cuenca (sp?) so might be willing to part with Tello.

I think we'll need someone who follows Dortmund and German football closely to illustrate to us exactly what kind of a player Sahin in. He barely played last season for Madrid but was instrumental in a title winning Dortmund side. He's a classy player (of what i've seen).

You will like Sahin, (slick passer, constant movement, classy touch) you won't care for Tello as much but both are practically risk fee as plenty of clubs will take a chance on these players.

I'm sure Keni will expand on this further.

Does Keni watch the Bundesliga though? That's where Sahin actually played. He barely played last year. I'd ask someone like Hollie or Rurik who normally watches the Bundesliga a lot.

I alluded to that LTW.

Yah, but I named and shamed posters. I took it to the next level bru.

Y'see Oncey.... YOU SEE!

Tello is the type of player I've been crying out for at Liverpool for years. He's explosive, skillful and can ghost past defenders like they're not there. But as others have said, if he's that good, why isn't he in the first team?

He's still quite raw and either tries too hard or needs to work on his decision making. Probably both. That's why Cuenca was (or is) favoured over him. Cuenca is one of those players that doesn't stand out immediately as he's not really pacey or skillful or anything in particualr, but as you watch him over time you start to see and understand - he's a clever measured player with good feet and fits in well.

I'd be in favour of getting Tello just for someone exciting to watch on the wings for a change. I suspect he'd end up frustrating us a lot though and whether there is enough short-term benefit to go through his growing pains and then hand him back to Barca I don't know. Plus he kinda looks like Torres.

I'll leave it to Rurik to do Sahin justice but there is a player you'll like.

Tello is irrelevant now, as for Sahin...

Sahin is a left-footed central midfielder in the Xabi Alonso/Pirlo mould. Will turn 24 in September. A world-class talent. He was the youngest ever player to play in the Bundesliga and the youngest ever to score in the Bundesliga. Also the youngest ever to play for Turkey and the youngest ever to score for them too. At 21 he became the leader and the most indispensable and "foundational" player for Dortmund, playing as a playmaker alongside defensive midfielder Sven Bender in 4-2-3-1 formation. I don't know in which position he plays for Turkey.

Strengths:
Long-range passing (top 5 in the world IMO). Great feel for the ball, so he rarely overhits or underhits a pass
Vision and awareness of teammates' movements
First touch
Intelligence and composure beyond his years
Not afraid to tackle
Discipline - has never received a red card in his pro career, and doesn't pick up many yellows either
Knows how to participate in the pressing game effectively (Dortmund has by far the best pressing game in Germany, even Bayern couldn't get out from under the press)
Set piece delivery - Dortmund regularly scored from his corners and free-kicks
Can score from a free-kick and many of his goals are important goals

Weaknesses
Can't really think of any. He is not the tallest guy, so maybe he is not a monster in the air, but he can jump (his only goal for Real was a header from a corner, surprisingly).

Stats
Last season in Dortmund (10-11):
8 goals, 13 assists (in all competitions)
Season before that (09-10):
6 goals, 8 assists (in all competitions)

Not that I want to raise expectations or anything... 🙂

Seriously, I think we got one of the biggest talents in world football. If he adapts to the Premiership and avoids injuries, I think he is going to become one of our key players. I want to thank Jose Mourinho, Brendan and Xabi for making this happen. Can't wait to see him in action for LFC.

Does anyone else think that if Sahin signs, it'll change the necessity in every game for Lucas? I don't want this to turn into a pros and cons of Lucas thing, but it could well be in many games, we might possibly see Sahin and Allen in centre mid with Gerrard ahead. Anyone?

I think it'll be bitter sweet if we sign him on loan without an options. It'll be gutting if he leaves after being sensational for us. Even if the option is £17million, I hope we have one!

Thats certainly an option, I think Lucas offers a defensive ability that we still need though, I think he'll be a main starter for us, I think it's Gerrard that will have less games, Lucas, Sahin and Allen would make a fantastic midfield, quite frankly if we manage this coup of a signing, we'll be spoilt in this area.

Definitely, between those four we'll have quality and depth too beyond with Shelvey and Henderson (I don't know how long he'll last now, personally).

Did Allen ever play as an out-and-out DM (without that other Swansea lad whose name I forgot)?

No.

I reckon Lucas might not get selected for some home games. I think Rodgers might decided that in home matches against supposed "weaker" teams, if we play a possession game (and when you have players as good as Sahin, Allen, Gerrard, Agger, etc at keeping possession it's very plausible) we could forego a defensive midfielder i.e. the opposition can't attack if they don't have the ball. Barca do this at home regualrly where they will leave Busquets/Mascher out and just fill the midfield with creative types.

Plus, its not like sahin, allen etc can't throw in a tackle

Now that is what I was after. Cheers Rurik (and ken too).

Left footed you say? Interesting. I like it. I want this guy now. Seems like my kinda footballer.

Guarantee ryan, he's quality and he WILL impress.

I don't recall many games where Busquets has been left out in favour of a more creative player.

What we may do, which I believe we did against Leverkusen is see Lucas drop deeper alongside the CBs whilst the fullbacks push up. This is something Barca do a lot.

His favorite move is a (perfectly weighted and timed) diagonal pass/through ball from left-center to the right flank. I hope in Rodgers' system Glen Johnson will be pushed forward far enough to get on the end of many of those passes (think Xavi ---> Alves). But we also need a good right winger who could turn those passes into goals or assists. Now the Tello is off the table, I think we have to get Adam Johnson. I want Johnson & Johnson right flank.

Gerrard on the right could also be an option.

Maybe I imagined they do it more often but I've seen them play without a dedicated DM'er. Spain do it quite regularly too, they play Xabi and Xavi in CM and leave Busquets out (but never against decent opposition) and the onus is on Alonso to do a bit of "mopping up".

Anyway my point is that we will hopefully have a very flexible midfield and Sahin, Allen, Lucas, Shelvey, Gerrard, Dempsey etc will be rotated. Rotation is acceptable as long as the players you're rotating a decent.

it is of course interesting theory. Somehow it might raise Lucas game to being more involved going foraward? He did pick up the challenge to become a strong defensive midfielder, so he might as well develop other areas of his game. My perosnal thought is that he should rather be covering for two of the others in games against weaker opposition.

-------------Suarez
Borini---------------------Gerrard
----------Sahin----Allen
-------------Lucas
Enrique-----------------Johnson
--------- Agger--Skrtel
--------------Reina

?

I think the key for Rodger's system is to populate the team with players who are comfortable on the ball, have good technical ability, and game intelligence. Each of his signings so far have those attributes, which should make his style of football easier to implement. I don't worry about too much about being oversubscribed in central midfield, because in a 4-3-3, there is less of an emphasis on wide midfielders, and much of the width will be provided by the forwards, and overlapping fullbacks (© spiderneil). Therefore, having competition for places in those midfield roles, and options from the bench will prove hugely beneficial over the course of the season.
