if gerrard can get 15 goals from centre midfield and x player score 15 from behind torres whilst torres gets an injury free 20 goals then we're in a better position as a team.
I remember everyone saying exactly that last summer. And then we bought Robbie Keane. Perhaps it's not quite as simple as you make it sound?

robbie keane wasn't given time to settle, started by playing on the left and due to torres' injury didn't play as the second striker behind torres for many games. all of these factors contributed regardless of whether he was actually good enough or otherwise.

i actually think yossi good do a job as the second striker if we brought in someone more dynamic on the left to improve on riera.

i'd rather put gerrard in midfield and keep our system than go 442 or buy a player of a much less calibre to replace alonso.

Right idea, wrong personnel.

The team does need more match-winners, as has been suggested by other posters here.

Keane was a good idea, but badly executed.

Yeah, I agree entirely. I included Kuyt from Rafa's perspective more than my own.

With all the Xabi speculation flying around, the 4-4-2 option is becoming more attractive by the day

-------Torres-----Kuyt--------
--Silva-------------------Yossi
------------Gerrard---------
------------Masher------------

If we go down that route, though, so much depends upon Kuyt and Yossi performing to their best all year round, rather than in fits and starts.
I'd rather stick with the 4-2-3-1 formation as the Torres/Gerrard partnership is too valuable to separate.

If Alonso leaves, there will be enough money to replace him + buy Silva (or anyone else who can fill all three positions behind Torres).

Replacing Alonso isn't just a money thing. It would be really hard to find someone who is good enough and able to play that role.

Of course, but Rafa seems to be buying players to fit in a 4-2-3-1 formation and we've played that formation for quite some time now, which hopefully will give us an advantage in the title race.

Rafa has made our team like a machine where everybody knows their position, when to run, when to hold. Converting from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-4-2 will set us back IMO. Not in terms of players, but in terms of that interaction between the players.

That said, I'm never gonna be a Premier League manager, so I'm glad I'm not making these desicions 😉

I could see Utd turning their attention to him, since they're missing out on other targets. I wonder if they'll reprise their interest in Huntelaar too?
I thought Huntelaar as well, and I wouldn't rule out Eto'o yet either...
Or they might get really desperate and try to sign Michael Owen...

Nah, that's just silly.
Utd have been linked with Fabiano for a while now... he's a good striker.
He is and rather underrated as well.

After 21 pages, I think this Silva move won't materialize. The player doesn't even indicate he wants to leave and I don't think we have the finance to secure this signing. Even if Xabi leaves and we get silly money, we'll be facing another gap hole in CM that rather more or less leaves us in the same situation.

£25m for a player who can play"attacking midfield" or behind the lone striker, but isn't a traditional winger

Who is, like Garcia, diminutive and not very pacey.
Who, unlike Garcia, doesn't really score many goals.

8, 7 and 6 in his last three seasons.

And this is a player Benitez wants to spend £25m on?

Jesus Christ.
He's definitely in the right category of player.

Skilful, attacking mid, can play wide or central, creative.

I like him.
