...is definitely a top class defender and not a midfielder, said somebody on TalkSh!te. "Nonsense", do I hear you say? Well, I'd probably have agreed with you if it weren't for the fact that the person saying this was Marcel Desailly.

Any views?

I think he's a great defender when on form, as good as anyone. sadly he's prone to brain farts and fuck ups due to lapses in concentration

He's a luxury player.

when played at CB he's dross 40% of the time ... as a DM or LB, he's actually very good ... he played really well for Chelsea there under Rafa (DM) ... Considering how lowly Mourinho thinks of him, maybe another opportunity to get talent from Chelsea for cheap.

Yup

I remember in the Europa league, he played at left back for benfica. He ravaged us.
Exactly this, he was great for Benfica on the left. A Rolls Royce compared to Ally sadly.

Carragher and Neville were banging on about this earlier in the season .Neville was making the point that to british and irish fans he's a headless chicken but south american and European fans love him . He's supposedly this "new" style of defender who's all about charging in last second to intercept the ball , silky with the ball at his feet etc . He'll probably go to Barca or Real and they'll love him , he'll suit their style of having loads of possession but then fuck up in a champs league semi or final.

Desailly did in the same interview say the following about Luis - which are the reasons he won't ever be a top class defender

He told Hawksbee and Jacobs: “He wants to play but he has to understand that to be selected for his national team he has to perform consistently. He sometimes looks like he is absent during games. He loses control of his defensive commitments.

“That’s probably why Jose Mourinho wanted to shake him and show him the partnership of John Terry and Gary Cahill has been good for him."

Desailly is seriously bitter about the Suarez handball going by recent interviews.

Out of all the things people can criticise Suarez for that handball should be bottom of the list, actually it shouldn't even be on the list, never understood it or the blaming for his celebration, so what? il'd really hope one of our players or an England player done the same thing in similar circumstances.

It only ended up being Suarez because his team mate (Fucile?) made a pigs ear of saving it himself.

Couldn't swear to it but I believe Desailly's family originated in Ghana. That might account for his strength of feeling on the subject.

Anyway, the fecker turned us down when Uncle Roy bid for him (we offered more than Chelsea but he wanted to live in London), so f'ck him.

I'm pretty sure that's right.

Desailly's family does originate in Ghana ... as does he mind. He was born Odenke Abbe in Accra.
