I watched the games earlier in the pub and a lively discussion took place about Beckham.

One bellend proclaimed him to be one of the best footballers to ever grace the game. I politely disagreed and said while he was a talented footballer and certainly one of the best strikers of a football there has ever been he isn't one of the top players to ever play the game - he's a player whose reputation has been enhanced above it's station by his celebrity status.

What say you ?

It's is a tough one on Becks.

Some say he is up there with the best.

Some will say he wasn't even the best free-kick taker in his generation - Dejan Stanjkovic and Juninho Pernambucano are rated much higher by some.

I wouldn't have even graced that "one of the best footballers to ever play the game" effort with a response.

If you think that, you're fucking clueless, so what's the point in arguing the toss over it?

Rivaldo was a better free kick taker.

Well it was some ginger tosspot that decided to butt into a conversation that didn't include him to voice his (ludicrous) opinion. And given he was standing over me as if to attempt to intimidate me it was either reply or hit him.

I chose the peaceful option.

He was a gifted, cultured footballer who deserved to play for the biggest clubs in the world.

But he was never in the same league as the players in the top echelons in the game.

I think it was his eye-catching set pieces which led to many overestimating his abilities at times. I'm not so sure his celeb status influenced football fans in any way.

Uneducated ginger tosspots in Ireland? Surely not.

To the question. He was up there with the best at what he is/was good at, but that was limited. He was an excellent dead ball specialist and put in fantastic crosses but his game lacked flair and variety. He would never, ever drop his shoulder and go past his man for example.

If soccer was like American Football where you could bring 'Special Teams' on for specific events he would be almost without peer. But it isn't and he isn't.

Fair enough.

Here it is in a nutshell: Beckham was brilliant with his feet, shit with his brain - both on and off the pitch.

Definately a very good player but I suspect had he been pig ugly he wouldn't have had the profile he has had.

To be fair to him though the celebrity stuff would have had its downside too.

Wrong. Beckham is way better than him.

Unless you meant the racist spitting twat Sinisa Mihajlovic, who used to score from free-kicks and straight from corners for fun.

Do you think?

Some of the balls that he put in were out of this world, you can't help to think that he possess good "football intelligence" (Not the most popular phrase round ere I know)

Tbf, I've never seen anyone crosses the ball better than him.

I dunno. Ive never viewed him as a 'great' but he ticks a lot of the boxes doesnt he? Scores, creates, great attitude, work ethic, amazing crosser of the ball, great set pieces, iconic, captain of club and country, most capped player ever, played for three massive massive clubs.....its hard to argue that he isnt 'a GREAT' whilst maybe not being erm great.
Me i'll never forgive him for that fuckin penalty. Shitbag.
Summing up. He's as big a player as there'll ever be. But not one of the best ever.
Now RYAN GIGGS.....Well thats a different matter.

I rate Scholes higher than either of them myself.

Becks is a wonderful footballer who has played at the highest level for a long time and is the best crosser I have ever seen.

But he is not one of the "greats".

Its a weird one. I bet worldwide more people think hes a great than not.
That's largely because of the way he's been built up by the media.

He was an excellent player that probably achieved all he set out to in the game bar perhaps international success, but I really don't think there is any question to be had over whether he was a great of the game.

Let's put it this way - if you were asked to name the best matchday squad you could from the last 15 years, would Beckham make the bench, let alone the team?
I dunno. If youd asked me in 1999 id probably have said yes.

Beckham should be nowhere near any list of greats. Of course that doesn't mean he can't be acknowledged as an excellent footballer. He'd be right up there in the 'best right peg' list but there are too many limitations to his game to go much beyond that. He can still play a bit, too.

excellent footballer, superb professional but pretty one dimensional to be remembered as one of the greats and the discussion wouldn't even take place if not for his celebrity off field status.

i'd still take him on loan in january though

Stan Collymore called him a "sarong-wearing joke" last night.
...and then he wanked on the bonnet of a ford mondeo while a middle aged bald accountant fingered his wifes wizard sleeve.

Pretty much, except he then gave his wife a slap because he's "depressed".

I think in some ways the celebrity stuff has actually detracted from his abilities as a footballer. It's always difficult to say what a 'great' is; certainly Beckham has never had anything like the range or instinctive genius of a Cruyff or a Maradona or a Zidane, and surely no one would claim otherwise.

But you can't deny that, at his peak, he was probably one of the most - if not THE most - *efficient* footballers in the world. Almost every cross he put in for United ended in a missed chance, a save or a goal. I remember dreading us playing against him and Andy Cole like I've never dreaded us playing against anyone, before or since. I bet Carra feels the same.

Oh dear...just fucking slap that bellend will ya. Beckham is just a quality crosser of the ball and free kick taker. That's it. Nothing more and nothing less.
Yeah thats kinda my feeling. With Cole and later Van Nistlerooj he was fucking devastating.
Lets say 1999 to 2002. I cant think of a more effective rm ever.

If he had a bit of pace about him it would have made a difference.
The fact that he never had any to start with is effectively prolonging his career
