Darwin Nunez

Easy – the most impressive characteristic that Darwin has is his speed and his physicality.
Couple that with his resilience and a never-quit attitude and you have a player with an extremely high work rate.
He will give his all for his team – which should work well with Klopp’s ethos.

Shame he’ll be with Ten Hag then.

Did he ever look like he had the range of attributes of Nunez? It isn't about just having a good game against us, but what is it that the player has in the locker? Carroll, we knew, was there to be on the end of balls into the box, and mainly aerially, pretty much. Nunez appears to be a totally different kind of player, a complete modern forward, operating from both flanks, and scoring a wide variety of goals. There is absolutely no comparison to be made other than they both had good games against us.

I agree with you! That’s what I was trying to explain to @moron and others; I think the Cavani comparison is superficial as well. I think Nunez will replace Mane in terms of ball-carrying and finishing.

I just want to play devil’s advocate for a minute and point out that Carroll had his own strengths and I never particularly hated him as a player - it’s his own laziness and injuries that were his undoing, but the boy had talent. Had he been as driven and professional as someone like Harry Kane, we’d have totally different conversations about him.

Yes Sigh, but it would not be if we were not spending so much money on this guy. I just don't get it, really don't get it at all that we are spending this much money on this player. The only comfort I can take from this - is that he scored against our defense which I regard as one of the best in the world, those four central defenders we have in Ibu, VVD, Matip, and Gomez - on their day are the bollox. But we play a high line so he had space to run into. But he gave them a hard time, so hoping he can do that against the other defenses. He also has pace which means we could still do speedy counter-attacks.

We’re prepping for life after Mo I reckon

Carroll is a bit like our Lukaku. We bought him but didnt really Play to his strengths. In addition to not being a pro.

Completely different to this lad though, as a player.

Totally agree on that point - see the impact he had on the FA Cup final game when he came on at the end against Chelsea. I just wish the c*nt had the self pride to be professional enough to make it.

Anyway - with all this talk of Darwin, I decided to lookup the Youtube highlights, and I have to say - he has various abilities for a tall guy. There seems to be dribbling, awareness and trickery in him which I was not expecting at all. This might work out for us given that he has both pace and strength to go with his talents. Also watched the clips against Konate (I missed that game and his goals) - looks like he gave Konate and VVD a really bad time. I really hope this works out.

From watching the various misleading YouTube videos, I actually see him as a bit of Bobby, but with pace. He has all sorts of goals and an eye for the pass, even if that is not his job at Benfica. I can definitely see him dropping deep a bit and then running at defenders, not just in behind.

Mostly excited about this, which worries me.

If he's got a decent first touch, he'll be a Diego Costa/Nando Torres type (Liverpool version).

If he's not got a decent first touch, he'll be a Lukaku/Torres type (Chelsea version).

Either way, YouTube videos don't excite me, and maybe I'm unfair on him cos I'm comparing him to a 2-footed, pacey, hard-working, skilful, goalscoring legend in Sadio.

I also don't know how a wnumber 9 is going to play well with Salah or Diogo.

But I suppose, in Klopp I trust.

I know he wears the no.9 for his current side, but doesn't he play predominantly off the left like Mane has for most of his time here?

Wow - this is one of the only times I've ever really disagreed with your position, rurik. Carrol was proper shite. I don't mean that in just a humorous, superficial way either. I mean he was not even a championship standard footballer. No timing, stamina, will-to-win, on-field intelligence, can't pass, limited technical ability. Fucking. Shite.

Are you comparing him to peak left wing Mane? Or number 9 central Mane?

Peak Mane then fair enough. Number 9 Mane not so much

I asked my Uruguayan friend and he said the jury is out there.

"He's meant to pick up for Cavani and Suarez but he's not there yet. There's only one standout player now in Uruguay (Valverde) so we're due another one or two. Uruguay is quite crap these days so hard to judge how good he is since other than Valverde there's nobody that good at playmaking. "

No, those are actually misleading - they managed to find a few nice passes from across the season for the compilation, but in reality he’s proper shite at passing and link-up play, nothing like Bobby. This is why I think Klopp will use him like Mane - help progress the ball by running and lay it off to a teammate who’s better at passing. Or isolate him on a flank 1 on 1 against a defender - in that situation he’s really dangerous and hard to stop.

He can play on the LW, but he mostly plays at CF who often drops into the left channel or drifts to the wing in order to create space to cut inside.

Lets not forget that he’s a 22 year old kid either, so he’s got time on his side to improve and iron out the issues in his game.
We got the best manager and coaching staff for just that job.
