Taking a complete break from football for health reasons.

On behalf of Darren Fletcher, Manchester United wishes to announce that he is taking an extended break from football for health reasons.

Over the past year he has had several absence periods which we have attributed to a viral illness in order to respect his right to medical confidentiality. Darren has, in fact, been suffering from ulcerative colitis (a chronic inflammatory bowel condition) for some time preceding this.

Whilst he was able to maintain remission of symptoms for a considerable period this has proved more difficult recently and Darren’s continued desire to play and his loyalty to both his club and country has probably compromised the chances of optimising his own health and fitness.

He has therefore accepted medical advice to take an extended break from the demands of training and playing in order to afford the best chance possible of achieving full remission once again.

We request that his privacy is respected and hope that the removal of the additional stress associated with speculation regarding his health will also aid his recovery.

I thought it was Owen that suffered from a sore arse?

Ouch, wouldn't wish that on anybody.

I know someone with it and they've undergone numerous surgeries to remove parts of the bowel and numerous steroid courses too. Either one would leave Fletcher unable to play for a while

Shame for the lad.
Good for me.
Get well soon Darren.
But not well enough to play football.
Regards.

Really sad, hope he gets better.

Isn't this similar to what Marcus Babel had?

Kind of, both are autoimmune diseases but Babbel's problem was with his nervous system.

Worm therapy is supposed to good for that isn't it?
[/quote]
I've heard this too. A friend of mine has it and I've lost count of the number of operations she has had on it. She was thinking of looking into the worm therapy.

that's horrible, one of my best friends had that a few years back and the toll it took on him was absolutely shocking. he was a big sporty lad, rugby player, but very statuesque rather than chunky, and absolutely as strong as an ox - a real adonis to be fair. he was living in London when it happened, and i was still up north, and the first time i saw him afterwards was genuinely shocking. i think he'd lost about 3 stone of muscle in a few months - there was no fat to lose. it's very very debilitating - i don't think he's really been able to drink alcohol since, for example.

incidentally, he's jewish and apparently it affects them disproportionately, as strange as that sounds.

It's a shitty thing to have. I hope he gets better soonish

Is it wrong to laugh at this?

I'm leaning towards yes but my moral compass might be on the blink.

i'd say no. it's not like he's dying or anything, and he's fucking blessed in so many ways. but, still, one sympathises.

At least they won't be winning any Champions Leagues until he comes back.

Football aside, get well soon.

My sister-in-law has it so I do have some sympathy for him

I've always quite liked him as a player and he's never been remotely offensive about us.

Good luck to him.

How the media works...utd release statement asking for Fletcher's privacy to be respected. So bbc five live get some specialist on to tell everybody that Fletcher's condition will mean he's suffering from horrendous diarrhoea. Then they Crerand on to say that all the big clubs will be chuffed to bits that utd have lost another one of their players!!!

Crerand is just a rent a quote twat.

Can't believe anyone asks him for an opinion anymore, on any topic.
