Poll Dann or Cahill

I know, I know another sh*te thread by the guy who's always wrong about everything but I think this question is quite relevant, considering that we're linked to both of them according to the press/insiders.

It might seem like an easy choice and for some it probably is, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

I've been impressed by Cahill when I've seen him, whereas I can hardly remember Dann (his CB partner for Birmingham, Johnson, made the greater impression on me whenever I watched them). Big Jan Molby has apparently said he thinks Dann would be a better bet because he holds his position whereas Cahill tends to go wide and cover for his fullback more, which you have to respect, but I'm sure Cahill would play the way he was asked to play if we signed him, so I'm sticking with Cahill.

Haven't watched either of them much tbh, was Dann the player who played on when injured against Arsenal in the league cup final? if he was he was pretty monster that day.

If Cahill wasn't good in the air then there would be no point us having any interest in him.

That has to be part of his list of pro's.

Id say that he's good in the air but not as good as Dann. So therefore I left it out of the pros.

I think we are more likely to sign Cahill, but I'd not be upset if we didn't get either....

we should go for whoever is better in the air. sure, would be great to have a centre back with good ability on the ground, but last season we got raped by set pieces and we really need to address this.

i'd happily have the cheaper one, as i've seen nothing from cahill that impresses me overly. not for the figures being touted anyway. Least with Dann you're getting someone who would give their all for the shirt and not only come because it's a step up.

The thing is I really rate Cahill, but Dann would (and I'm probably exaggerating here), die for the shirt. It's like buying another Carra. It's his team. We're talking about a boyhood fan, a season ticket holder, who is (reported) stalling on a move to other clubs in order to fulfil his dream. It does sound a bit "corny" in today's football, I mean it's all business but it would be interesting to see how it all unfolds.

I don't get what Molby's saying though.
Doesn't it completely depend on the team (manegerial instructions) and players around them?
Hyppia, one of the best in positioning, was constantly on the left covering for Traore and Riise. Was this a bad thing? Obviously not, as we had one of the meanest defenses in Europe for years while he was around.
I'd be worried about Dann if all he can do is stand in the middle and watch on while the fullback's getting raped.

I dunno, the same was supposedly true of Pennant and McAteer. Being a fan doesn't make you the right player necessarily.

I haven't seen enough of either to have an opinion.

The thing is, Cahill is more of an Agger type defender, and unless we're replacing Agger, I don't really think Cahill is what we need. (And even if we were replacing Agger, we'd obviously still be short of a centreback.) I don't think there's any doubting that Cahill is better than Dann, but nevertheless, that doesn't make him the right player to choose. What we need is a tall, commanding defender with aerial presence, preferably with his best years ahead of him. I don't know if that player is Dann, but the fact that I can't remember him standing out once in all the times I've seen Birmingham (who let's just remind ourselves, were fucking shit last season) would be a major concern for me.

IMO that's slightly too limited a view of Cahill. Yes, his class is the main thing I remember from watching him, but he can mix it too.

He's not a beast in the air though, which IMO is what we've been lacking since Sami left/stopped being a regular for us. He's decent in that respect, but I don't think that's enough.

I've yet to be convinced that the new CB has to be a monster in the air TBH. I suspect Jocky and Lawrenson would be the majority choice as the CB duo for our All-Time XI and neither was much cop at heading the ball, which was probably played more through the air in those days than it is now.

Maybe the definition of a "monster in the air" needs to be clarified but, for all intents and purposes, I'd disagree with this quite strongly.

Sami had a lot of qualities but it's no co-incidence that since he left or - as Del points out - since he stopped being a regular, we've been conceding from set pieces. Not even just set pieces - everytime a ball gets off the earths surface we've looked decidedly vulnerable and leaked goals horribly. Citing Jocky and Lawrenson isn't really fair cause they were playing in a much better team and the opposition didn't attack anywhere near as readily. Nor, importantly, were set pieces such a problem because the ball was completely different and couldn't be whipped in with such venom and dip.

I'll also comment that a number of us who watched them play picked Jocky and Sami as our preferred CB partnership. 😉 Just to rekindle that debate and all.

I would say Dann is one of the weaker CB's in the league when it comes to heading. How many times have you seen him play Modo?

Molbystwin, it was Roger Johnson who got injured in the League Cup final against Arsenal not Dann and indeed Johnson was magnificent that day.

Of course I've seen him play. It's strange that you're saying that heading is one of his weaker traits, cause everything I've read about him on the net says that his main strength is his aerial ability.
