Who were the unlikely cult heroes, or the disappointing shoulda, woulda, coulda players you really thought were gonna make it, but just didn't? We're not (necessarily) talking the worst players, but those that failed to live up to expectations.

How can Clough be a flop when he scored those 2 goals against utd? Especially when you make the 3rd goal scorer a cult hero

Because Clough was shit and he wasn’t as fat as Ruddock, didn’t turn Cantona’s collar down during a game nor did he break both Andy Cole’s legs in the same tackle.

All true, but he scored two against Utd when we were 3-0 down and setup the great come back. For that alone he deserves to be elevated above flop status.

Big Harvs? The fuck has he done?

For the Benny era my cult hero was Sissoko, flop Aquaman

Several cult heroes of mine:

Camara
Henchoz
Arbeloa
Bellamy
Origi
Bolton Baresi

Sami is a legend, not a cult hero. Garcia also too good for that label.

Keita at £55M is a bigger flop than Karius at £5M, IMO.

Karius was a cheap punt who didn't work out, it happens. Keita was meant to transform our midfield and take Klopp's team to another level.

Ragnar Klavan deserves a mention for cult heroes signed by Klopp. I would also say Matip is a cult hero, even though he's dead good.

Evans
Cult hero: Veggard Heggem (I don't know why, but I just loved him!)
Flop: Stan Collymore (yes, he was good - but did he achieve what he should have?)

Houllier
Cult hero: Igor Biscan
Flop: Jari Litmanen (I thought he was gonna be our Bergkamp)

Benitez
Cult hero: Momo, Bellers or Fabs
Flop: Morientes

Hodgson
Cult hero: Ummmm...Suso I guess? I dunno, wasn't one really
Flop: Joe Cole

Dalglish
Cult hero: Dunno, Enrique I guess
Flop: Andy Carroll

Rodgers
Cult hero: Divock
Flop: Markovic

Klopp
Cult hero: Big Nat
Flop: Naby

Yes, Kyrgiakos fits the bill. There were quite a few!
Rafa had loads - Aurelio, Sissoko, Arbeloa, Bellamy, Maxi, Kyrgiakos, Yossi, Riera, Crouch could all fit the bill. Maybe even Babel for his general waviness and that CL appearance against Arsenal

To me, cult heroes are players who endeared us due to their personality and love for the club and community rather than their footballing ability. Erik Meijer was for example a cult hero. Players who were not that good but stepped up and counted at certain occasions could also be counted as cult heroes.

I see that folks have chosen Arbeloa, Allison, Henchoz as cult heroes. These are damn fine footballers who delivered on the pitch big time over a longer period of time. I know Henchoz is remembered for his "saves" in the FA cup final but he was also a part of a great defense with Hyppia. I think calling them cult heroes belittles the contributions they made to the club.

And Ruddock and the word hero in any form shouldn't be used in the same sentence. Yes, he had those headers against United but he was a part of a group who pretty much let the standard slide at our club due to a lack of professionalism and commitment.

It's cult hero. Near enough all of klopps players have been such a success, that calling them "cult hero" degrades them.

Harvs is the fucking future and I'm conductor on the hype train

Really? Has Keita cost us a final? How many games did we lose or draw because Karius had a brain fart moment? Karius is a £100m mistake
