Crystal Palace v Liverpool

We’re still only operating on 75% if that and won both matches. We look fantastic. No wonder the rest of the league are shitting themselves.

I wouldn't say we looked fantastic. We controlled the game against palace, but was still a shaky performance, and the attack was no where near up to scratch.
To say the rest of the league is shitting themselves is generous.

That Palace game was a biggie, esp.coming as early in the season as it did, because it was exactly the kind of scrabbly, scratchy away game in which we've dropped points too often before. Got to keep up the momentum now of course, but yeah, it's starting to look good thus far.

That was my biggest take from the match.

Read the meltdown thread. They’re all fuming. Pep chatting shit shows he’s concerned.

We won both games at less than 100%. The way we controlled the games. We are indeed fantastic.

I still think it's a bit much to claim that City or Guardiola are "shitting themselves", or whatever, despite what the Bluemoon mongs think.

They've got more money than anyone, and a massively expensive squad that walked away with the title last season. For all that we knocked them out of Europe, it still doesn't mean much when we didn't win anything, and came fourth and 25 points behind them. And they've hardly started the season badly themselves.

They know we're a threat, and the media are positioning us as the team most likely to give them a decent title challenge, but let's not get carried away.

Interesting analysis.

Suggest watching with the sound switched off though. No particular reason...

Yes, I was considering posting this. Arl Budgie did his homework alright, and managed to largely nullify Firmino's influence. Klopp would do well to look at this. We need to mix things up when we're being countered in this fashion with very narrow space between midfield and defence.

It's a brand new season. I'm going to get carried away.

It's not always easy to discern between a tactical plan that nullified Firmino, and him just not playing that well.

Nah, in a way it is an old plan, because we know that we're never as effective at cutting teams apart with 2 tight banks of four, and that is, to a significant extent because our lynchpin Bobby is not dragging people about as is his modus operandi. He isn't doing anything much different in this game, it is just that they aren't allowing him to tease them into places they shouldn't be. It is in these games that we need to change things around. I do wonder whether having the bullish Shaqiri driving at people between the lines and taking the odd snap shot might be effective.

Definately interesting. We will see a lot of this defending against us this season. Hopefully Our forwards are a bit sharper and find opening anyway. Both Shakiri and Sturridge with their exceptional skills can help us here.

I don’t know, the video talks like hell about ‘in between the lines’, and talks up the tactic, but at the end of the day, it’s simply called parking the bus. LFC Midfielders moving around? Don’t budge midfielders! Stay deep where you are. LFC Defenders passing the ball around? Don’t budge forwards! Stand around the halfway line.

They’ve been told to sit back, just like most other teams that play against us. Nothing to do with that tosser’s homework me thinks.

They definitely tried to isolate Firmino, & it largely worked.

That said, he started last season slowly & seems to be doing the same this season, at his best he can deal with that tactic & still make space for himself & others.

I suspect we'll see that tactic used by loads of sides this season, Firmino is often the lynchpin around our best play, so it's the obvious tactic to use.

I also found in interesting how deep Salah dropped, I have a theory (backed up by klopp saying that Palace played exactly as he expected them to) that he was instructed to play so deep as Firmino dropped even further to cause them problems picking them up & crowding them out.

Yeah, you're right actually. It isn't rocket science, but it is true that Firmino becomes much less effective against these tactics, and maybe we need to, yunno, mix it up.

I'm not sure that any performance that generally gleans 6.5s and upwards for our players can be considered 'shaky'. In fact I'd call it professional, and far from shaky.

Palace had very very few chances, despite their strong attack (esp. very pacy left side), and our defence was strong across the line. Midfielders did well as did Mane and even Salah, though not on top form, on a perfect day he could have scored five.

I'd be more than happy if that performance constitutes 'shaky' and ends up being the worst we play.

They rattled the crossbar and has a bulk of the play for the last 20. Becker saved some blushes on occasion. Defensively accomplished, but in attack we lacked. Firmino was nullified and Salah wasteful. Certainly not enough to have teams "shitting themselves"

Well I didn't use that phrase. And I disagree with your assessment that we were 'shaky'. We were far from shaky, it was just tough to break them down. BTW Alisson's hand was right under that shot from Townsend that hit the crossbar so unlikely it would have gone in. The match stats tell the story in fact : 63% possession, shots 16 (6) to 8 (2) and clear-cut chances 4-0.

Then we'll disagree. Stats never tell the whole story. Positives to be taken from it, sure; but not as convincing as being made by skme
