Am I for real? Fuck off. Seriously.

You're usually better than this, Keni.

Ian Rush wasn't known for running hard at opposing defenses from the halfway line whilst in posession of the ball either.

If you cannot see that Crouch was a very decent footballer during his time with us, you're simply determined not to. I'm not going to waste my time trying to convince you of something you're determined to ignore.
I never said he wasn't a decent footballer. In fact, I think you'll find that I did acknowledge his decentness and that he did better for us than most expected him to.

You made some ridiculous comment about people maybe not liking him because of his looks. I just replied that it's not his looks - it's the his style that I personally was never much of a fan of.

I liked Crouch

But it's for that reason I hope he doesn't come back.

Me too

Ahh, there lies the difference. I don't give a fuck about style, perhaps I should, I am from "effectiveness" school of football.
I can't say I liked Didi's "style" but he was effective. I never liked John Wark's "style" but what a player he was.

Well, it's all connected, isn't it?

Are you looking back at Crouch now and thinking "what a player he was"?

I'd be surprised if you are. He was a decent player for us all things considered - I said as much. Maybe this a giant throwback to the Crouch is shit debates, but people are getting overly protective.

I bless the day that we no longer have a big man/small man axis upfront for us leading the line.
long ball up to big man, flick on to small man, goal. *shudder*

What about his style didn't you like?

He wasn't able to beat 5 defenders on a maxy run from 40 yards out, so he didn't try to. He held posession up very well, involved other players, and played to his own strengths, which are vastly underrated by many.

I think you'll find my comments about how he looks hit a lot closer to home than many would like to admit.

In another team, with different players around him, in a different system... whatever... his playing style might have not bothered me.

We lacked pace. We lacked incision. We lacking a cutting edge up front. That's why I wanted a player with a different "style" to his. His tendency to hold the play up meant that often our attacks were slowed down and became laboured. Not just his fault of course, but ya'know, everyone has gone on about effectiveness of the player / team, so it's admissible.

I prefer to see strikers who are more mobile and in this Liverpool team with next to no pace out wide, I think it's a must.

Exactly again.

You know, Babel is probably a fair comparison, because in the rather b&w viewpoint of some posters, one looks the part, one doesn't.

The problem is, in reality one of them looks like he gives a fuck and wants it enough to continually strive to improve his own game and overcome the cynicism (and proves it too). The other is Ryan Babel.

Not really, and I think the crux of the point is that he was well worth his place in the squad. No one suggested he's an ideal replacement for Torres, but he's a hugely effective plan B, better than anything else on our books in recent years.

He didn't want to be a plan B, so it's a moot point. He was a decent player, but meh, nothing more than that - not a great target man because he didn't have the physique and struggled to take advantage of his height, not a great goalscorer because his finishing was inconsistent and not a great all rounder because he lacked pace amongst other things.

When it comes to other divisive ex-players like Cisse for example, people like to make a point of the post-Liverpool achievements. Well, Crouch has failed to go to move to another top side - he went to Pompey and is now being targeted by other mid-table Prem clubs. That's his level.

For such a hugely effective player, it's a wonder he ended up at a club like Pompey and is now being targeted by Sunderland and a rather muted Spurs side. It's a wonder that having left Liverpool, he's fallen down the pecking order in the England setup.
How many players leave the top four clubs and go anywhere else other than down? And lets not forget the offer was there for him to stay.

There was reported interest from big clubs in Europe and Arsenal last Summer but guaranteed first team football from Pompey. No one can suggest he lacks ambition, he played for Liverpool and after his initial struggles did really well and did all he could at International level too.

Mid table to UEFA cup is probably where Defoe is at, but I wouldn't fall off my seat if one of the top four signed him because of his effectiveness within a squad. He might not be the answer week in, week out, but he's well worth his place in a top squad because he'll play his part and make his contribution towards a high finish.

The way you're talking is as though the top four are littered with players that would only move on to another top side, which is clearly bullshit.

There are a number of players in that mid-table bracket that I'd take - for example, I'd have Carew over Crouch for that Plan B option. I brought it up because it's an oft used argument or do you disagree with that?

Crouch wanted to play as a starter and for a large part of his Liverpool career, he did. He wasn't good enough in that capacity and his style didn't really suit our team in my opinion for reasons already mentioned. One only has to reflect on what Torres has brought to the side. That's what I'd like to see more of.

I've said numerous times in this thread that Crouch is a decent player, but it doesn't seem to be enough. I'm not going to say I rate him as highly as you do because I don't and never have done. He's just going to continue to be underrated by myself and others in your eyes. The only reason I got into this is because I think the "it's because he looks funny" is insulting.

Apologies Keni, I thought you were fighting the fight against Crouchy, but Vlad had a point, that is the crux of many peoples thinking over Crouch, that it's because of how he looks.

I just have a problem with people saying he's shit, that's all, he's not and he's strived to prove so, which is why it galls me to see players with more natural attributes that are suited to todays game being given a fucking reprieve because they do look the part.

We could do worse and we could do better.

I actually really don't want us to sign him because threads about him are so tiresome at this point.

Babel's prettier.
And he has a bigger cock. It's all in the jeans.

Voronin had a better scoring record when they were both there, and didn't spend half his time squaring it to fullbacks after an unnecessary yossi type run (but slower) towards his own half, thus ending any counter attack.

Not good enough.

Crouch exceeded everyones epxectations after Rafa signed him. He appeared well liked by the other players and comes across as a top bloke but I can'see Rafa signing him again especially for £12m.

I would say Mrs Crouch to be will have a major say in which club he signs for next with Sunderland well off limits.

I reject all this top bloke stuff. He moaned he wasn't playing CONTINUALLY when on sky and what not. We play one up front. We have a chap called Fernando Torres.

Grow up Peter.

I think that's untrue.

I remember quotes where he said it was completely understandable why Torres was picked ahead of him

If true then fair enough an I'll retract. I just remember him geting snide digs about Rafa in (in a jokey manner, though clearly serious).

I might be a top fighter pilot, though if Topper Harley is in town, I'm in the B team and realise this.

I don't think he was cuntish about it at all, he admitted he wanted play but acknowledge the player ahead of him, I think he threw a wobbler once in the time he was here for being brought off.

nail on the head there..he said something along the lines of he may have to leave for first team football. If Rafa is playing one up top it's obviously going to be Torres.
