The reason he was always positive about Liverpool was because that's the only time his leaving hasn't been his own choice!

Houllier's decision not to sign Anelka is only made to look as bad as it does because of the horrible cunt we signed instead.
No, it's because any flid could see he was a top quality footballer, but our manager let him go and replaced him with an inadequate player who wasn't fit to lick his boots, thus precipitating a massive decline in performance, a disastrous failure to build on a superb season, and ended up with the manager getting sacked.

No way could that ever happen again.
As if it could only a foo.............oh

I honestly felt that Anelka thought he had found his niche in Liverpool, for some reason the town clicked with him, and he felt at home

regards

I suppose because he was a good player, but we didn't see anything like his best years

He was another 'final piece of the jigsaw'

Yes Diouf was possibly the worst signing in our history. A terrible lack of judgement on Houllier's part.
However my point was that the not signing Anelka looks worse because his replacement was so shit.
Yes Anelka was and is an excellent player but I can kinda see why Houllier had reservations. It was the thinking Diouf was any good that was the real problem.

As soon as I saw Diouf in the '02 World Cup, I knew he was going to be a cunt.

Have to say he was great in the League Cup Final against The Scum.

He was awesome that day. I was there and he ruined their left-back.

He also did one glorious bit of skill once on the touchline, scooping the ball over the defender's head. I think it was against Villa maybe.

That's about it for the useless, halfwitted shitcunt though

Pretty much.

He scored 2 on his debut!

Obviously it didn't last though and the good old stat... he became our only number 9 to ever go a whole season without a league goal.

he was also sensational v b'burn in the league cup where he got a hattrick of assists but he was proper shit the rest of the time and the thought of us passing on anelka for him seriously fucks me off.

Only a couple of months or so after we signed him, there'd been some nightclub incident and he was interviewed in the paper giving it large with "I'm a playboy, nobody tames me" etc.etc. For me the warning bells started to ring there and then, and never really stopped.

Diouf was on the cover of Four-Four-two magazine, just after we signed him, the headline read.... "I will become the best player in the WORLD".............He has the number 9 shirt nailed on in my Premier League team Of Cunts.

He gave Glen Johnson a roasting while Johnson was at Chelsea.

What reservations do you think Houllier had Richey. Anelka did nothing wrong for me. On or off the pitch.

ha ha! he destroyed johnson that day but then again babel destoyed johnson too 😉

I think GH just couldn't bring himself to trust that Nico had really changed, Sunny (which was doubly unfortunate given that it had been his decision to take the guy on loan in the first place and that Nico, as you indicate, had done everything asked of him during the loan period). GH had not so much a conservative streak as a conservative three-lane motorway running through him. When he arrived we needed it, but he ultimately proved unable to leave it behind and grow with the job. In hindsight the Anelka debacle was the first sign of that.

Its all assumption of course but maybe he just thought that Anelka might become trouble or maybe he never really had any intention of signing him (it was Thompson managing the club on a day-to-day basis for most of that time wasn't it?).
I do recall certain stories of Anelka's brothers eventually arriving (remember the fuss that was always made about Anelka's brothers? Looking back that was quite amusing) and talk of him wanting to go back to Arsenal at that point. As I said, assumption, but given Anelka's track record you can see why a manager might think twice about it.

As for whether Anelka had changed, there is still no real evidence to suggest that he had by then. He had fallen out with Arsenal, Madrid and PSG, and after he left us he fell out with City eventually, he fell out with whichever Turkish club he was at (can't be arsed to check it now, sorry) and as soon as he signed for Bolton he was saying that he wanted to go elsewhere.

He might have been different for us, but 6 months of no trouble and a few nice comments everytime he has been pissed off at other clubs since don't prove anything

I'm actually with Jules on this one; he was great for us and it's a bit harsh to let his reputation precede him.

But I really dont blame Ged for having reservations.

Replacing him with a shit player wasnt goo tho.

It's also worth noting that Rafa could have corrected the mistake at any time he wanted.

choosing instead to pursue the awesome morientes. LOADS of people on koptalk (myself inclued) said we should go for nico because morientes was past his best.

Rafa's a motherfucker, too.

That's my point Avvy, its the getting Diouf that was the real problem. If we'd signed someone great while seeing Anelka continue to sulk in Manchester, Turkey and Bolton we wouldn't be moaning so much.

Well no, of course not, but that doesn't make GH's final decision any less of a poor one. If he felt as you do about the guy, he shouldn't have signed him on loan in the first place.

And I'd still have had sympathy for Nico, who did absolutely everything asked of him at LFC and moaned afterwards precisely because he never wanted to leave.

I could well be mistaken but wasn't there some history between Ged and Anelka when Ged was in charge of France?
I think it was Anelka that Ged blamed for missing out on some major tournament?
Think it was when they lost to Israel when all they needed was a draw to go through.
If true that could well have had an impact on the decision to bring in Diouf.

If only someone would invent some way of researching something like this.Better still if it was done over the internet.
