We really have had so few quality black players, it's untrue.

I don't wish to re-ignite any 'racism' chat, but the only decent black player we have ever had is Barnes. Everyone else has been fucking shit: Traore, Brains, Diouf, Diao, Song, Eggnog...

Look at United, Arse, Chelsea (and Madrid, Milan, Barca and Inter) - a role call of excellence: Ferdinand, Evra, Henry, Essien, Drogba, Henry, Vieira, Makelele, Gallas, Campbell, Cashley Cole, Desailly, A Cole, Yorke, Anelka

We are cursed

He wasn't very good mate.

The fella who looked like Uncle Fester was good for a bit....name escapes me...
But your right, they have been thin on the ground.

Mark Walters?

One good game against Auxerre, and that's yer lot.

Useless Rangers cunt.

Ahh Titi.....Houllier unveiled him as.."The Black Overmars" highly inappropriate, though he was a vast improvement on "The Black Istvan Kozma"..Bernard Diomede

How would he describe our current crop...

Babel - The Black harry Kewell.....?

Johnson - The Black Rob Jones.....?

Lucas - The White........?

Yeah,I was always convinced that the only reason we got him was the hope that some cosmic divine karma wpuld kick in and he'd do to someone else what he did to us.

we end up with the rubbish black players or fail to get the best out of them

arsenal bought henry we bought heskey (for a similar amount of money I might add).
chelsea bought drogba we bought cisse (to be fair drogba cost way more than cisse).

So was gayle shit then? I know fuck all about him really.

He wasn't good enough for LFC at the time but at least he can claim to have played a pivotal role in one of our greatest games. Back in the early 80's away wins in Europe were like gold dust and a 0-0 home draw was usually seen as a very poor result (unlike nowadays where it acceptable).

We drew 0-0 at home to Bayern Munich in the semi final of the European Cup and as they were an awesome team at that time we were fully expected to lose in Munich and go out. Before kick off Sir Bob gave his team talk and confirmed that King Kenny (Portly/Vlad could one of you confirm it was Kenny that missed the game and not Johnson) was going to miss the game through injury.

He then stunned everyone in the changing room by announcing that Gayle would be replacing him. This was an amazing move, to give an untried youngster his full debut in a semi final at bayern but it was also brilliant that he didn't tell gayle he was playing until the changing room so the kid didn't spend all day getting more-and-more nervous.

He actually didn't see alot of the ball during the game, we played very defensively and tried to hit them on the counter-attack. Gayle never stopped running until he was subbed late in the game and he kept their defence on their toes throughout, fulfilling the role to prefection.

We defended superbly and then Ray Kennedy scored a great goal to put us one up midway through the 2nd half and despite a last minute equaliser by Rumminege we went though on away goals and went on to win the final against Madrid.

There might be one or two slight inaccuracies in the above so if any of the elder statesmen of the site spot any........

Yeah he was massively hit and miss but scored some brilliant goals.

Babel should be added to Brendan's list.

Sorry, I'm not an elder statesman of the site by any means but I'm pretty sure he didn't start the game, he came on as a sub for Kenny early on.

You're right though, it is that game he is remembered for

I seem to remember reading that Gayle said that had he known he was going to start the game he would have been crapping himself all day but maybe he wasn't even expecting to be sub and that's the news Sir Bob gave him before kick off? Portly will be along in a minute to clear it all up.

Although it was Richard Money, not Monet.....................

Before their first leg at Anfield, Liverpool were without the injured Graeme Souness and they struggled to create any goalscoring chances as a result. Bayern kept the Liverpool attacks at bay with relative ease and with Rummenigge in top form, they were always a threat up front, but they were still much the happier team at the end of a goalless draw. Bayern were even hotter favourites after nine minutes of the second leg as Kenny Dalglish limped off the pitch to be replaced by the little known Howard Gayle who joined the likes of Richard Monet and Colin Irwin in an injury hit Liverpool side. Bayern, however, appeared to be totally unprepared for Gayle’s pace as he went on to cause the German defence great difficulty with Liverpool taking increasing control of the game. As the game continued deep into the second half with still no goals in the tie, nerves became increasingly frayed and it was not until the 83rd minute that the breakthrough came. When Ray Kennedy scored with just seven minutes remaining, the tie seemed to be effectively over with Bayern now needing to score twice to go through. And yet there was still a dramatic finish in store as Rummenigge still had time to equalise four minutes later to leave Liverpool hanging on. But hang on they did and it was Liverpool who had incredibly reached their third European Cup final to the dismay of over 70,000 Bayern supporters in the Olympic Stadium.

Michael Thomas was not bad at all but did his achilles (?)...

Collymore.... uber dickhead but a cracking player

In fact it probably would have been fairer to say that instead of saying we've had an awful lot of poor quality black players that we've just had an awful lot of poor quality players.

Barnes was different fucking class altogether it has to be said, what a player he was!

John Barnes was one of the best players we have ever had

Michael Thomas did have his moments for us to be fair. As did Emile Heskey, Stan Collymore and David James.

Beyond that - Song, Walters, Diouf, Diao, Traore (Istanbul or not, he was as shit as it gets), Arphexad, Babb, Camara, Sissoko, Cisse, Pennant - none of them were great were they?

Of course it was a massive mistake to sign diouf over anelka, though anelka was hardly great when he was here if I recall correctly.
We didn't have him for as long as we should have but we have to include Anelka surely?
what a fantastic decision to get rid. I remember the news of anelka being moved on and feeling sick to my stomach and then having the news compounded by gh promising his replacement will be better. who was the replacement? diouf.
fuck. in. HELL.

I remember emule heskey always getting the nod over anelka because he was a better foil for owen.

Anelka started more games than he didn't when he was with us.

And he wasn't amazing at first although he did get better.

Obviously in hindsight signing Diouf instead was the worst mistake Houllier ever made but you could understand his reluctance to sign Anelka. He had been trouble at every single club, and continued to be trouble for other clubs after he moved on. Maybe Houllier could have assumed that 6 months of Anelka seeming happy enough was a sign that he would have remained that way, but I'm not sure I would have done.

It was understandable, but very short-sighted. We were absolutely flying for those 6 months with Nico Anelka leading the attack, important figures within the club queued up to say how well he had fitted in both on and off the pitch, and he himself made it very clear that he was desperate to stay, so I reckon there was enough evidence that he'd turned the corner career-wise. He didn't actually cause that much trouble for Citeh or Bolton either after we naffed him off - on the contrary, he practically carried their attack in each case. There was admittedly the very occasional newspaper article in which he sounded off, but what was noticeable was that EVERY TIME he mentioned how much he still wanted to play for us.

Junking Nico was Houllier's first major gaffe. Signing Spit the Dog instead, for £11 mill.or so of our money, was the next one and the rest, unfortunately, is history.

On the subject of Howard Gayle, the guy was magnificent in that Bayern game. Not only did his pace worry the Jairmens, he was up for the physical battle as well and I remember laughing at the expressions on some of the Bayern defenders' faces at times when they queued up to kick Gayle and were promptly whacked back. Unfortunately his skill wasn't on the same level and he ultimately didn't have the quality we needed, but that night he did the shirt proud.

Collymore's signing was probably the one that I have been the most excited about in the last tweny years.
I really thought at the time that he was going to be our very own version of shearer.
He really seemed to have it all, strength, pace, skill, an eye for goal with good header on him.
A pity that like the scarecrow in the "Wizard of Oz", he was completly devoid of a brain and was a total loon to boot.

Still, at least he has made quite the career for himself now :🙂

Agree completely regarding Anelka JJ.
His pace and touch were fantastic, I remember the hairs on the back of my neck tingling in that home game against Newcastle, such was his deft footwork and craft.
It is something that Ged and Rafa both have in common, Rafa was too intent in signing Morientes and ignored Anelka's come and get me pleas.

regards

I met Howard Gayle of few years back. He was managing a kids team in Toxteth who my mates lad was playing for. I didn't mention Bayern as he's probably sick of talking about it 😀

Ok I'm not saying that Anelka wasn't fine when he was with us, but I'm just saying that with his track record there was every reason to believe it would go wrong.

He always starts off fine but then he gets upset about something. At City he did well for a while until he fell out with them and they had to sell him. When he was in
Turkey he was ok at first and then eventually started saying how he wanted to go to another club. Ok, because we wanted him its easy to overlook this but imagine one of our players doing that!
At Bolton he said virtually immediately that he wanted to go to another club and was forever dropping hints that he wanted to go back to Arsenal.

The reason he was always positive about Liverpool was because that's the only time his leaving hasn't been his own choice!

Houllier's decision not to sign Anelka is only made to look as bad as it does because of the horrible cunt we signed instead.

Given his record in England, though, I bet Diouf had a history of causing trouble too.

The whole thing was a massive fuck up.

No, it's because any flid could see he was a top quality footballer, but our manager let him go and replaced him with an inadequate player who wasn't fit to lick his boots, thus precipitating a massive decline in performance, a disastrous failure to build on a superb season, and ended up with the manager getting sacked.

No way could that ever happen again.
