CL and EL draw

Villarreal have been very good at times this season, this will be a very tricky tie.

I'm going to be on fucking Mull for the final.

Are there a) any pubs on Mull and b) any pubs with BT sport on Mull or c) any internets on Mull
I Googled it. Not cos I thought you couldn't but cos I genuinely wondered about your chances.

A few of the pubs have free WiFi, but a TripAdvisor question from a few years back says that the Mishnish or MacGochan's both show footy, provided it doesn't clash with any of the Scottish matches that take priority.

So you should be sound.

I haven't watched Villareal play for probably 2-3 years, looked at their line-up and genuinely only recognize a couple of players.

Respect!

Hypotetically if we win the EL and City win the CL and Utd finish 4th behind Arsenal, they'll miss out on CL qualification.

Same here.

Anyone who knows anything about their current side care to share their opinions on them & our chances?

My only experience is from last season, when they had a totally different slate of strikers. Saw them in about 3 to 4 games, mainly against Barcelona and Real Madrid. In those games, they played 4-4-2 with strikers who're willing to track back and help, their middle and back four stay solid and in shape, and then they look for chances to hit on the counter with pace with Vietto as their main weapon, supplied by Giovanni or Cheryshev on the wing. These guys (and others) have left but their summer transfer Bakambu has replaced the goals.

They didn't score a lot last season, and still don't score much in the league this season, so I assume that the playing style hasn't changed even though there's been considerable turnover in their playing personnel. If that's the case, they're the sort of team I hate us to play - compact, well-organized, and not silly risk takers, but they had the capacity to push the pace of the game if they needed / wanted to. I don't think there are any outstanding individuals (other than Vietto last season), but they're solid as a team. I've no idea how Bakambu is, but from some highlights, he does look a bit like the busy bee Vietto was for them last season.

There are some notes here on Villarreal from the games I watched last season (mainly in the first page), when I was looking at how Vietto was playing:

Sidenote: Vietto's not done well at Atletico Madrid, but if we ever needed another striker after (presumably) offloading Balotelli and Benteke in the summer, I think trying to get Vietto in on a season-long loan might not be a bad idea. He'd be coming in on a lowish wage, would offer a slightly different kind of strike option to our current group (he's more Torres-like), and might have the hunger to salvage his reputation / career after an unproductive season.

Spanish fans say they are defensively sound, 2nd best record in La Liga. The bookies had them as 4th favourites behind Dortmund, Sevilla and us before the quarters.

It's the draw I wanted. Better them than Sevilla (though they are not the team of last season) or travelling to the Ukraine.

I know we are going to make the final because it's the day after I leave on a photographic tour of Bhutan, Myanmar and Nepal 🙁

i jinxed it on purpose cos secretly i didnt want to have to travel to donetesk

You wouldn't have had to, Shakhtar currently play their home games in Lviv (in the very West of Ukraine), which is a very lovely city. Don't think Donetsk will get any high-level football games any time soon.

I think Villareal is a bad draw, it will be tough for our players to adjust from playing a gung-ho Dortmund to a patient and solid Spanish team. It's like tennis: Dortmund is a serve-and-volley player and Villareal is more like Nadal. We will need to show totally different qualities to prevail in this matchup.

Sevilla or Villareal would probably have been quite the same approach.
Villareal look more consitent and defensively sound though.

The first game away at El Madrigal will be extremely tough. They have a great home record. Lost 1-0 to Las Palmas a few weeks ago mind.

Really hope Can is fit for these games but that probably wont happen.

I think you got them both correct, Ruairi. I don't have much Spanish but I thought the word for "town" was "pueblo". Maybe jimmy was thinking of the French "ville".
EDIT: Google agrees.

I thought villa was the Spanish for house or villa, even!

Would you argue against Brum being a Shit City though? [emoji12]

No argument

That reminds me of what I told Luke. Bex family are all bluenoses, & bitter as fuck too. The men also happen to suffer baldness.

So when Luke was taking an interest in footy (which has now waned in favour of YouTube & video games) I told him that they were bald cos they were all Everton fans & the stress of following such a crap team made their hair fall out. The fact we know very few other blues well & the men are invariably bald meant I could throw in another few examples to help persuade him.

He still believes me to this day & thinks their protests to the contrary are lies to try to persuade him to switch allegiances.
