Herd Immunity is the ultimate goal according to every single piece of scientific and medical research I've read.
The route to get there is where people differ. It seems to be acknowledged there will be further waves of this to come until we get to herd immunity stage.
The question is do you want to kill more people getting there quickly. Or get there slowly via a series of lockdowns which minimises loss of life.

I think the bit I struggle with is the concept of killing people, or letting more people die, to achieve herd immunity quicker and the reasons why people might argue that this is a means to an end.

That's not the discussion, herd immunity is the only solution. The discussion is between how to balance the public health and the economy while getting to herd immunity.
I'm on the public health side of things but there will become a point where simply having half the country lying idle (half the workforce in Ireland is on a Covid emergency payment), becomes a public health issue too.
