Fiorentina V Lyon being the big one. Anybody got any info on injuries, suspensions for this one? I can't see Lyon getting a result there, but anyway.

In other news, we play Debrecen, who are an absolute shower.

I think Aquilani might start this one, cos there's now way Rafa's gonna pick him away to Everton at the weekend.

I'm a bit worried that Rafa seems a bit reluctant to drop Lucas, which means no playing time for Alberto.

Rafa has always placed a lot of trust in Lucas but he needs to give our new 20 million pounds signing some time to find his feet.

Even if by some miracle results go our way on Tuesday, don't we have to win by a margin of three goals against Fiorentina?

Only if the Fiorentina-Lyon game is a draw methinks.

Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel set to miss must-win match for Liverpool
Tony Barrett, Times Online

Fernando Torres will not be fit enough to travel to Hungary for Liverpool’s Champions League match against Debrecen tomorrow.

Liverpool go into the game in the knowledge that only the combination of a victory in Budapest and Fiorentina dropping points at home to Lyons will keep alive their slim hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages.

Torres will remain on Merseyside to continue receiving treatment on the groin injury that has kept the Spain striker out of action for the past fortnight and faces a race against time to be fit for the Merseyside derby against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.

“We thought it’d be two or three weeks and he’s only about 12 or 13 days into that, so there’s no point in Torres going [to Hungary],†Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, said.

Ryan Babel, the winger, is also likely to be missing from the Liverpool squad having suffered an ankle injury during Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City at Anfield, but Daniel Agger, who was also substituted having sustained a facial injury that required five stitches, is expected to be available.

Benítez was heartened by the character shown by his team against City, despite Liverpool’s failure to secure what would have been only a second win in their past ten matches.

The Spaniard believes that there have been clear signs of improvement in their past three matches — draws against Lyons, Birmingham City and Manchester City.

“Over the last three games you could see we are doing a lot better,†Benítez said. “Against Birmingham there was a massive, positive difference. On Saturday it was the same — we got a very good reaction.

“I am really pleased with the efforts of all the players, they were working hard to try and get the win, right to the end.

“You can make mistakes but you have to be pleased with their character. If we win one or tw, things will get easier.â€

Torres will not play at Debrecen and will rushed back to face Everton next week to save his job. And get injured again for the next one month because he was not given enough time to be 100 % fit. Its all simple boys.

I agree with that last part particularly.

Everton are going to be a big match cause they have the potential to heap a lot more pressure on Rafa. We're desperate for a result, about to play a team who are a long way down the table and have just been smacked by the mancs quite comprehensively. However, there's no way they'll be the same team when we get on the pitch with them - a fact which won't rate a mention by anybody if they get a result against us.

If we're out of the CL by this weekend and then fail to get a result against an average Everton there will be pressure cooker around the club and particularly Rafa for at least a week. I personally think the team has to find something prior to January cause after Spur's win we're a real 5 points off 4th and looking at a struggle to get there for next season.

I don't think it's a given that we'll beat Debrecen. A 'shower' they may be, but we struggled against them at home, and our form now is much worse than it was then.

On the other hand, even if we beat them 4-0, there's still a good chance it'll mean nothing - and the derby is such a unique game that even the mild confidence boost a win would bring probably won't make much difference to us.

I'm feeling really pessimistic at the moment.

Yep, you're not the only one. Unfortunately.

I can't even bring myself to hope, I'm afraid.

I only wish this were May instead of November.
I am no longer hoping. I have actually given up and generally try to enjoy watching a good game of football during the weekend, hoping Man U will not win this year that is all.

Maybe we just win the Europa.....

Didn't Valencia win the UEFA Cup back then in Rafa's last season cos they failed to qualify in his 2nd season which was dismal?

That said, a couple of big teams like Bayern Munich or even one of Inter/Barca may dropped down to Europa League so it wouldn't be easy too.

I just hope we get past Debrecen. Afterall they scored 5 past Fiorentina in 2 matches.

Jovetic was missing for Fiorentina in their last league match and they missed him and Mutu against Parma. Lyon's last domestic result was disappointing too so they wouldn't want to lose. I think a draw is likely.

Is it true that topping the group is no advantage this year? If that is the case then I cant really see Lyon getting anything from the match.

Correct.

I do think that Lyon is able to beat Fiorentina away though.

*crosses fingers*

Well if topping the group meant an easier draw why would they not try to get a result?
Errr.... they would, but I still don't think they'll get anything in Italy.

Ok. Its an opinion thing of course. I think Lyon are a better team than Fiorentina and feel that if they wanted to top the group they could get a result.

If topping the group gives no advantage then I cant see them being bothered about a result though.

I think Lyon can go there and win. They're a decent counter-attacking team which will work in their favour, but it depends what team they put out, obv. Surely it helps to finish first?

And I'm still holding out for qualification; we're not fucking England, we're Liverpool. Impossible is what we do.

Lyon will be trying to get a result here as if they don't lose they will top the group. Obviously it won't be an easy game for them, but there's still an ounce of hope. But yeh, if it's a draw we have to beat them by 3 goals at Anfield which is not easy when your team is firing on all cylinders, let alone when they're playing as shit as we are now.

Nobody has told me yet if it is an advantage to finish top of the group or not. So is it?
Most the time it is, but there's always the odd occasion where you can get a tough draw finishing top. We got Barca a few years back which was very tough, but we managed to get past them.

The advantage that you are guaranteed from finishing top is that you get to play the 2nd leg at home.

Looking at the group tables so far this year there doesn't seem to be too much of an advantage as for who you will face with Juve, Real and Barca looking unlikely to top their respective groups but it is always nice to have that 2nd game at home.

Group winners will be drawn to runners up.

Ok I understand now. ferguson said the other day that he would play a weakened side because it didnt matter if he topped the group or not. He is no doubt aware who he can be drawn against and made a decision based on that.

Having said that Im sure Lyon would like to finish top and avoid utd or Chelsea

Because they want a runner-up in the knockout-stages?

Everything's gonna be alright !

Macbooks and N97s shall arrive and we shall qualify.

I just knows it !

Rafael Benitez has taken an 18-man squad to Hungary for Liverpool's crunch Champions League tie with Debrecen.
The squad that left Liverpool's John Lennon airport today is:

Pepe Reina, Diego Cavalieri, Glen Johnson, Daniel Agger, Fabio Aurelio, Emiliano Insua, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Jamie Carragher, Martin Skrtel, Andrea Dossena, Alberto Aquilani, Steven Gerrard, Yossi Benayoun, Javier Mascherano, Lucas Leiva, Jay Spearing, Dirk Kuyt, David Ngog.

Three left backs, 4 centre backs, 3 defensive midfielders and two strikers.

Looks like all out attack then :🙂
