Champions League Draw 2014/15

Arsenal are an odd to team to read - I think for all the 'They're the dark horse' lark, I think they'll only be that if Ramsey stays on the pitch all their league games ... Otherwise, I just don't see what they have that puts them in the Chelsea/City class.

So do we want a super tough draw with a couple of amazing glamour clubs to play but with little chance of qualification OR do we want a man U style cakewalk group?

I love the European cup but if I really want us to qualify for next year and the narrative that we cant do the league and the CL has sank into my psyche now...

Shit that Man City defeat was a downer!! We cant feel excited about a challenge on two fronts now...

FUUUUCK....

My Karma is ruffled...
Why the fuck did we sell him...

Mind you in 2005 we were what 125-1 to win....

I reckon we are better than that side...

Mind you we don't have anyone as good as Stevie was...

I think i should sleep more and type less for a bit...

Easy group.

Why do so many of your sentences trail off? Are you the kid in the wheelchair from Malcolm in the Middle?

So it works out like that in the end:

POT 1 POT 2 POT 3 POT 4
Real Madrid Schalke Leverkusen Anderlecht
Barcelona Dortmund Olympiacos Roma
Bayern Juventus CSKA Moscow APOEL
Chelsea PSG Ajax BATE Borisov
Benfica Shaktar Donetsk Liverpool Ludogorets Razgrad
Atletico Madrid Basel Sporting Lisbon Maribor
Arsenal Zenit Galatasaray Monaco
Porto Man City Atletic Bilbao Malmo

Ugh. Need some colour there Studs 😉

Fecking Gooners. They only just stagger through the qualifying stage and go straight into the top seeds. The way they calculate those points is way too weighted towards maintaining the status quo. Arsenal, a team that has failed to go beyond the last sixteen in the past four seasons, and finished no higher than third in their own league since 2005, shouldn't be seeded in the top group - UEFA are just rewarding mediocrity. Clubs that get to the semi final or final in the past couple of years deserve being among the top seeds, but those clubs that just chug away every year in the earlier stages need shaking up. It's no accident that clubs like the Gooners survive the early stages largely because they're protected from real challenges because of being seeded so highly. As soon as that protection disappears, unlike the clubs that deserve to be among the top seeds, they bomb out. Not occasionally but year after year. That ought to be obvious enough even to the blazers at UEFA. If you repeatedly fail to progress several years in a row, then you shouldn't be holding on to a top seed place.

Benfica Basel and Maribor would be aces.

If we want to be 'sure' of qualifying (probably 1st in the group for an easier Last 16 tie) then I'd go with the above.

If we want to show that 'we-are-back' ... Barca or Munich + PSG or Juve + Monaco, the Group of Death !

Funny how everyone seems to be at one extreme or the other. Personally I want as easy a draw as possible, but if you really yearn for some glamour then surely Barca etc is enough by themselves.

This sums up my thoughts - I'd like 1 big name (although that is almost a given anyway) and then 2 of the weakest teams going. I want us to go deep into the tourney and so the easiest route to do so is my preference!

Hey, I'm down the middle, I want Porto, Dortmund, Malmo, not easy, but not the hardest, I just really want to play Dortmund again, great club.

The way I look at it is that there are 2/6 pot 1 teams I'd fancy us to beat and 4/7 pot 2 teams. If my maths is right that gives us a 0.52 chance of getting a reasonably favourable draw, ie 2 beatable teams and one toughie.

Are you assuming all in pot 4 are beatable? If so, I think you're missing you the chances of getting two beatable ones from pot 1 and 2. It would be 71% chance, or 29% chance of being unlucky with both pot 1 and 2.

Shaktar would be a fucking nightmare. Away fans wouldn't want to go, it's a pain in the arse to travel to & from inbetween league games & they're not a massive draw in terms of entertainment either.

I hadn't forgotten about that, was just trying to work out in my own head what the chances of getting one and not the other were, since that's trickier than just a straight favourable draw.

It's been a while since I calculated any probabilities!
