Following on from the Esther Ranzten thread.
I volunteer as a traveling marshall (meaning you accompany the players to keep the crowds quite and ensure nothing untoward happens) at the HSBC at Sheshan in Shanghai every year because all of the top golf players that attend. I've met most of them however it's the worlds #1 & #2 who stand out. Tiger Woods is a selfish, cold bugger of the highest order. Ignoring everyone before, during and after his rounds. Whereas my opinion of Phil Mickleson and his wife Amy (who now has breast cancer - looks like they caught it early though) has undergone a 180 degree reversal.
Mickleson and his wife are truly lovely people. He can never say no to autographs after a round and stays for up to half an hour just signing as many autographs as he can until the pandemonium becomes too much (most players stay 5 - 10 mins tops) ! During the round he gives golf balls away to many of the youngsters. The year he won he gave us (the marshals) the HSBC trophy to hold whilst he went to shower and told us to take photos if we liked - we did ! He later had his photo taken with all of the travelling marshalls (about 8 of us) as a thank you and then had his agent send them to him in the USA before autographing and having them sent back over to us. His wife Amy is just as nice to everyone too.
Tiger Woods on the other hand - has no time for anyone except himself (although I met his wife and she was really nice), and if his attitude to everyone here is anything to go by then I figure anything good he does that's publicised back in the USA is either to cultivate his image or as a tax write off.
TV / Media can be so deceiving - as if we didn't know that already.
