Manchester United and Liverpool receive huge cash windfalls
02 September 2009 | By Adam Fraser

English Premier League champions Manchester United received a huge windfall from last season's Premier League's broadcast rights, which saw the league pay out more than UK£1 billion for the first time.

United and Liverpool topped the list of earnings, with the Premier League champions collecting £51.5 million. Liverpool also broke the £50 million mark, albeit narrowly, collecting £50.1 million. The totals represented approximately 20 per cent of United's total annual revenues, and an even more significant proportion of Liverpool's.

------------

Yeah we're strapped for cash.

We wish.

This is why H and G have clung on to the club for grim death. They know how profitable LFC is, or can be if its potential is maximised.

Maybe we can sign someone in Janurary.

'Windfall' suggests something happened to increase the pot over and above expectations, any idea what?

Nothing, just journalist wank.

The first 50 per cent is shared equally, 20 ways; another 25 per cent is paid according to the number of times a club has a match shown live, with a minimum guarantee of ten payments; that leaves 25 per cent, which is paid as league table prize-money, divided into 210 equal shares, each team gets a multiple based on their finishing position.

1st = 20 shares
2nd= 19 shares
3rd = 18 shares

.....
20th = 1 share

its the lack of seats in the stadium that is ultimately costing us here.

windfall suggests extra money, i'm sure all of this has already been accounted for and goes towards every day running costs

It's good news, but a new stadium would really bring in the revenue for the yanks. But it's a case of speculating to accumulate and they don't want the risk of speculating.

Not in the current climate. It will be a matter of getting the timing right, between signs of a real recovery and striking up a deal while it is going to be cheap and steel and materials are still competitively priced.

I feel sorry for the Yanks on this, there seems to be a feeling from some of avoidance just to fuck us about, which is clearly not the case.
It was the main item on the agenda when they arrived - they ripped up the plans for the poor-mans Reebok, and presented a bigger more dramatic, more forward thinking plan.
Perhaps we should give them a little credit and suggest they could see what was about to happen to the world economy and delayed the building, which in hindsight was very prudent.
The stadium would be self financing, for every sell out that we have at 42k seats, if we sold out at 62k would bring us nearly three quarters of a million pounds extra , just in terms of entrance revenue, never mind the spin off sales.
However for this to happen they need to keep us a success on the park, and that means spending on the team, which I think we have fallen short on this summer. Keeping competitive is also key to this windfall and the CL qualification. If you start falling short it can all come down like a house of cards.
I hope they have something up their sleeves.

regards

Excellent post as per, matey.

My guess is that that last bit isn't lost on H and G but that the banks have got fed up of waiting for their money and have tightened the screw.  In a way I hope that's what's happened because, if it's not the case and they've chosen to cut off the transfer kitty when they didn't have to, that doesn't say a lot for their business acumen.
