Now I understand why Neville can never be a good manager – the man's got no functioning memory!

One thing I like about Neville, is a refreshingly undisguised dislike of Liverpool and Liverpudlians. Same as Carra with Manchester United.

His comments about his infamous celebration, and how he'd be disappointed if Liverpool scored and they didn't launch into the Kop to celebrate like a nutter, shows an honesty about the rivalry that I appreciate, and many non-residents of the area can't always understand. He doesn't even try and explain it, because he knows it's mental.

And it also makes him easy to hate, which i'm sure he quite enjoys aswell.

Neville is one thing, but after the game on monday my dislike for Martin Tyler just exploded.
His comment to Coutinhos shot "ah well"..

Tyler is a fucking prick.

He doesn't even try to hide his bias. He always sounds high pitched & delighted when we fuck something up & then back to his usual monotone indifference even when we play scintillating football.

Compare the ah well from Coutinhos fantastic long range effort to this:

Its so biased its shocking.

Tyler used to hide his bias but as he's gotten older it's gotten incredibly obvious. Check out his commentary for both goals at Stamford Bridge from a few weeks back. Ridiculous.

His decline as a commentator has been dramatic. It would be interesting to note certain passages of play and transcribe what he was saying while they were happening - he's hardly ever discussing the action, he's usually wittering on about what happened a year ago, or two years ago, or about players and teams that aren't even involved in the fixture, or, of course, England. The combination of him and Neville made it unbearable.

Do these tweets only show the top half for anyone else? I think it's a desktop issue and I guess most of us are on phones now, still frustrating as hell.

I agree with everything you say there. The only thing I would say is that I think it is fair to expect commentators/co-commentators to be neutral, i.e. Neville should be nowhere near commentary on a united match. Or Carra on a Liverpool match for that matter.

You do realise that this is the video equivalent of a photoshop? He didn't actually commentate that over that part of the game.

Could be, I have no idea. He's biased and you can hear the difference in commentating regardless.

I only see the top half on my tablet. To see them I have to open them in a new tab.

It has indeed been a decline. At one time he was quite good at it and I don't remember noticing much bias in his work. Maybe the increasing tabloidisation of the broadcast media has allowed (or even persuaded) him to throw off any pretence of professionalism, or maybe he's now an old man in a hurry.

Or maybe he's just a d!ck.

Don't know why people think he would be a good manager. Spouting shit on telly which you never be held responsible for doesn't make you a good manager.

The start of it, I think, was when he was paired with Andy Gray, and Gray gradually went from sidekick to co-waffler. It ended up with Tyler completely losing his focus on the game that was going on in front of his eyes. Then I don't whether he decided himself or was told to do it, but he started trying to fashion 'trademark' sounds, like that ear-bleeding scream for 'Aguerrrrrrooo!' and 'Henrrrrrrry!' Horrible. And the ironic thing is, for all the self-conscious attempts at sounding 'of the minute,' he wrecks it all by always declaring excitedly, 'And it's LIVE!' I mean, you've got to be over 40 to remember when there were games that DIDN'T go out live on the telly!

Who does Tyler support? Don't people have him down as an Arsenal fan?

Football commentators always, conveniently, claim to support clubs so humble and inoffensive they must have been chosen by a computer. Tyler, for example, claims he supports Woking (with Chester as his second team). Yes, of course you do, Martin. Similarly, John Motson insists he's a lifelong Barnet fan, and Clive Tyldesley, whom everyone knows is a rabid Manc fan, ludicrously tells people he only supports a non-league team, which he refuses to name. I guess commentators tend to be Nobby No-Mate types who could have grown up with a passion for such lowly clubs but it's all a bit too convenient.

FYI, here's who the hacks support, as far as I know:

I'm surprised at Winter. He always seems to have a very soft spot for Liverpool, to the extent I assumed he was a fan.

Maybe it's all the LFC autobiographies he ghost writes

Henry Winter's brother is one of them weirdo Islamic converts. He's done quite well out of it academically coz they're from one of those ultra connected lizard families, but it's still very fucking weird.

I guess that the commentator world is pretty competitive, so they don't want to admit to supporting the big clubs (which I am sure most of them do) in case it goes against them when the big games are given out.

They don't want to risk being relegated to the Tony Gubba, John Helm and Peter Brackley level and only ever end up doing the brief highlights games at the end of Match of The Day.

My ears are burning. 😉

Someone's had a word with Saggers about his very similar descent into madness on TalkSh!te BTW. He still can't totally break the silly habits he's got into there, but he has drawn his horns in somewhat, for which relief much thanks.

Carragher: "If you're a fullback, you're either a failed winger, or a failed centreback. Nobody wants to grow up to be a Gary Neville."

Hansern: good one, although - by contrast with later in his career - Carra himself was a failed CB when he became a fullback for a few seasons. 😉
