You said anyone with half a brain would pick Gerrard, Poulsen and Lucas over our current midfield. Roy Hodgson had half a brain. He did pick those three in that combination. They were significantly worse than what our current midfield is producing. So you're wrong. I suppose you blocked out the memories of those times, so I'm happy to bring them back to the forefront of your mind.

So Hodgson had the specific option of picking between Henderson, Can and Milner vs Gerrard and however else?

To expand that question and say Gerrard and however vs anyone in the world is a blatant rewrite.

Let's revisit the Hodgson era. Yep, I'd take Lucas, Meireles and Gerrard plus Aquilani vs the current garbage midfield.

No, you were saying this is our worst midfield. Then you defended the point by saying Gerrard raised the bar enough in midfields of the recent past. I suspect you thought this was a hypothetical as you'd blocked out the actual memories. However, it's not hypothetical. We have the benefit of witnessing Hodgson's midfield, compare it to Klopp's midfield, and categorically conclude that the former was far worse in spite of having Gerrard in it.

Whatever option Hodgson had at his disposal is a different argument. The point here is we've endured worse midfields than the one now. And we endured it because of the owl faced twat.

Yes I would agree with that only because Meireles was a fairly good player. Which is why I said Gerrard, Poulsen and Lucas.

I was using all of our midfielders as an example, so comparing them to say...Diao and Cheyrou, without mentioning Hamann, Gerrard, Murphy and Redknapp and deducing that we've had worse midfields isn't exactly fair. Which is exactly what Brendan did.
 
He blows hot and cold. If he wants to go fuck him. No surprise he will run his contract down. I can't believe people get so hot under the collar about it. Happens all the time in most sports.
 
Well I'm in your minority and I think its a shame to lose him for nothing. Certainly until we have someone better which we don't really have at the moment.

He can be very annoying at times, switching off at crucial times, but overall I think he's worth having. And he's only 23.

Of course I as well am disappointed that he's going for free but what comes around goes around I guess. We got Matip for free so...

Losing the money is crap but he's no great shakes. I'm sure he'll look ace in Serie A though.
 
I'm in the meh category on this. We should have got it done when he wanted 100k a week. Now quite rightly his agent is looking at par averages and he believes he can get more elsewhere on a bosman.

I think we may have sold him if we got Keita back in the summer. But we didn't. I'd also like to get Grujic more minutes, so if it means dropping Can to the bench from now on, I wouldn't be against it.
 
Did Klopp give young players a go in midfield at Dortmund?

I’m guessing Grujic is not giving anyone the impression that he’s a top tier talent otherwise he’d be getting more game time.

This seems telling from Klopp...

Asked about January's opening of the transfer window, and Can's ability to strike a deal with a European club, Klopp added: "That is part of football. If it happens like this we can't change it.

"If a player [belonging to another club] is ending his contract next summer and he is good then we should try to do the same so that is an opportunity for all of us."
