Can't

He is already better than Henderson, imo of course. If there are any doubts, given the trajectory of his progress since he's joined us, he will be a better player than Hendo will ever be in 2-3 years.

If he goes on to join Citeh though, he's dead to me.

I don't buy that. Henderson was performing much better than he currently is a couple of years ago, if he hadn't been hit with a terrible injury, he would be a much better player now. He was providing assists and chipping in with goals. Henderson has 24 goals in 6 years so an average of 4 a season, Can has 11 in 3 seasons, so more or less the same. He was also alot more consistent at his peak, we arguably lost the title because of his ban after the City game, we've never even remotely relied on Can that heavily.

He's performed at his best early this season when the door was still open for him to potentially move, what's he done since? His usual one great performance in ten?

Henderson was very very good in our 13/14 season where he had a more attacking role and was a key reason for the success for SSS. His passing was brilliant that season. Since we have withdrawn him into a more restricted role (partly tactics, partly due to his injury) we've limited his ability to use his strengths and placed more focus on his weaknesses. I think he does the role ok, but he doesn't excel there and it is a tough ask for him to do so.

True, Hendo was good in that season we almost won the league, I think it was 14. He was good, pressing forward, providing assists, chipping in with the goals, as what a good midfielder should. But since then he has regressed every season. He was ok last season but I would argue that Can had the better season, especially in the final 3rd of the season. This season he hasn't been any better than last, in fact worse, it is simply not good enough just running alot and providing little in attack.

At the moment, Can is the one showing glimpses of Hendo of that '14 season and Hendo has not gone anywhere near the performances of the '14 season.

Can's lacklustre displays this season could partly be due to his contract impasse but you could see what he can do when he turns it on. The physical plays in midfield, the driving runs forward, the deft coutinho-esque passes, the piercing shots, nothing Hendo seems to have in his locker anymore.

Wouldn't disagree that Hendo's been better for us in the past, but I don't think that's all his fault. He's been doing what he can in a deeper position which doesn't fully suit him, but - like Can himself, I would argue - is better in a role which places more emphasis on attack than on defence, similar to the one he was playing when - as mark says - his suspension may well have been influential in our not winning the league. This is one of the reasons why it's vital we get a couple of MFs in who are better at the defensive stuff (the other being the protection they'll help to give the back four). Adding Goretzka to the signing of Keita would be ideal.
