Saw a few posts about our old favorites Fowler and Spearing, then chances upon this article about Grobelaar

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/oct/01/bruce-grobbelaar-interview-donald-mcrae

Always thought he was the most fascinating of all our former players, though I never got to see him in action.

Wonder what is everyone's thoughts on him? Hero? Villain? Was there any truth to those match fixing rumors?

Interesting character and allways a laugh when Reading old stories about him. He has been through a lot of shit in life.

One of the match fixing allegations was in that Man U 3-3 game. If true that he should let in 3 goals it was quite risky to let them all in the first 20 mins😀

I think it was actually meant to be an away match at Newcastle, where they won 3-0. None of them were particularly down to bad keeping.

He was framed on the match fixing, its not true

He was fucking class

I know it's been used by enough people to excuse god knows what, but I do think Bruce really is a Walter Mitty sort of character. If anyone was going to talk himself into something like that, it was him.

I'd like to think he didn't do it, but the evidence seemed pretty damning. And as we know from his interview there, he was bitter about his pay and treatment

He was my hero as a kid. I was one of the few boys (that wasn't fat) that aspired to be a keeper. Yeah, that bitterness about his pay, which came across even more powerfully in the evidence in the case, does make it look bad for him. However, the fact that the sting was orchestrated by the S*n makes me refuse to acknowledge the whole thing. It was a cunty piece of business from start to finish. Accepting he is guilty, a guy who had just lost most of his cash in dodgy investments, his career almost over and on a contract that was clearly not befitting a club legend, was deliberately targeted- tempted by a fucking evil organisation who delighted in trampling Liverpool's name into the mud. Of course he shouldn't have done it, if indeed he did, but I refuse to acknowledge any 'evidence' tainted by contact with those bastards.

Indeed whether he is guilty or not will never change my opinion of the man, a great Goalie a born winner and Red through and through...

Getting caught up in a sting when your team is a horrific shambles and a shadow of what it used to be...

In truth, there was a lot of shady shit done by a lot of dodgy folks all the time back in the day, Real winning 5 European cups in a row, Ourselves being robbed away in Milan when we should have been the first British club to win that trophy as well in 65... it would have shut the fucking Mancs up a bit eh...

Some bad shit happened then ( and probably still does ) Brucey will always be a hero to me.

Nasty to read the way the club treated him financially for his fathers funeral as well...

Players really were servants then eh...

I spent an evening in Iceland with him in 2006. No joke. I was running an event, and two stars dropped out and we got him in. He came to Iceland at the drop of a hat, played for multiple teams, did a pub crawl with us, and I put him in a cab at 5 am back to the airport. It was brilliant watching people look over at us, and then their eyes do a double take. He said Dalglish was his favorite manager, Souey not so much. Felt impolite to ask about the bungs.

Last I heard he was coaching keepers in Ottawa.

None were particularly down to bad keeping?!?! Apart from he mysteriously went full Karius on all the goals? And even threw in a little pretend jump for the last one?
He defo had a big brown envelope for that hattrick the dodgy fucker.

Bloody hell - hadn't seen that for 25 years, maybe he was a bit dodgy. Though I maintain the goals weren't just down to Bruce, the whole defence were failry shite on all 3 of them. Maybe they had a share of the bung ...

Thank God that Karius wasn't implicated now - people would be full-on David Icke in their conspiracy theories. If you want to to rig a result, without the complicity of opposing strikers and probably your own defenders, you'll end up looking hopelessly criminal, and/or freakishly lucky.

his defence that he didn’t tell police because he wanted to go on a one man detective mission to unmask the perpetrators wants some believing
