Post Match Brentford (H) 25th August

I didn't watch the game live and skipped the pre and post match talk. Any news about Jones and why he was left out?

He's been used to playing 90 minutes every game and isn't used to being hauled off with 15-20 minutes to go. Happens all the time to the forwards and it's never an issue for them.
He needs to realise it's for his longer term benefit, and to give minutes to Bradley so he can develop. Can understand him being a bit teed off because he's not used to it, but it's the new normal and he needs to deal with it. Long-term he'll be grateful.

I just think he's pissed off because he wasn't on the pitch long enough to get an assist.

Slot also said its because he didnt have much of a pre season. Its a non story.

The thing that really struck me about today's game was how easy things looked in possession in the second half. I get that some will not be that keen on a pipe and slippers approach to the last 20 minutes of the game, but what I liked was that every one of our players, when on the ball, seemed to have easy options. There was no need to hoof the ball to get away from an opposition player putting the press on, there always seemed to be an outlet ball, particularly from the centre to out wide and vice-versa. It feels like we have more structural discipline in possession of the ball and with more games under their belts this will become more natural to the players.
And on the attack, it felt like we had a bit more urgency than the other possession-based teams in the league (particularly City and Arsenal). Slot's football looks like it sits in a middle-ground between the boring, keep-ball control of Guardiola and the frantic madness of Klopp. It might not be as entertaining as what we've been used to, but it'll be less anxiety-inducing for us as fans and it will put less physical and mental stress on the players.
I still think we need to expand the squad, but even if we don't, I don't expect us to be stretched mid-season due to injuries like last year, nor utterly goosed at the sharp end like we were in April.

Slot may have heard about my plan to hang around the Chelsea reserves in hopes of a mistaken bumper pay package.

The main difference I have noticed this season is that there aren't multiple times per game that I fill my briefs as the opposition pour through our midfield and defence.

By the same token, we aren't looking likely we'll batter anyone by 5 or 6 goals. But I'd take a solid 40 odd games of 2-0's.

Yep it's not all action football but it's effective

Slot seem to be focused on control and he was talking before the game about the players taking less risks, and not loose the ball in transition etc.
As Carra said, it felt like a City performance from 2-0. Very professional.

Think thats blown waaay out of proportion. All most everyone is full of praise, and..

In early December 2010, my wife went on FB to tell me (and the world) how I was the perfect partner, how she couldn't imagine being without me and how she'd love me forever. In mid December 2010, she told me that she'd never really loved me all that much and that I'd been more like a roommate to her for just about all of our marriage. In January 2011, she was gone.

Don't trust the gram, lads. 😉

Perhaps he wanted to stay on in midfield (to replace Macca, for example) when Bradley came on. He did start drifting into some unusual areas for a RB as the 2nd half progressed and there is a good argument to be made that he would have created more than any other CM when the game became stretched in the last 25 minutes or so. But Slot probably thought we needed to shut up shop instead of creating more.

Overall, I don't think it's a big deal – I think at some point in the next few games he will get his wish; judging by Slot's comments he is very much aware of Trent's vast array of talents and doesn't want to limit him to a narrowly defined fulback role.

It's been a discussion with friends that as the internet has evolved, the people who are "performative" online in relationships are the ones less likely to be telling the ole veritas!

Happens all the time to the forwards and it's never an issue for them.

There was a huge issue last season when Salah kicked off after being subbed.

I think there was another issue when he was subbed on so it's clearly an issue and players do have a moan.

Great run from Diaz for the first goal, he has that in his locker unlike Nunez.
On the other hand, Diaz was caught lacking on their short corner with Virgil & Robbo both pissed at him but he seemed to ignore them both.

I like Graven I do, he did well again but it just doesn't feel right or feel enough. It feels a bit he'll do a job there.. but if we want to win things we need more he'll do a job.

Becker is still boss. Couple of Great saves.

I felt for Salah today, he wants getting anything from the ref with that big lump all over him.
The mismatch in size was ridiculous and Ajer was all over Salah everytime and Salah got nothing.
Still managed to slip away and score again.

Ibou sniffs out danger and extinguishes so well, he was brilliant today did really well.

I'd need to watch again but just wasn't sure at times where trent was playing, clearly pissed off he was subbed and is two games in a row now.

The passing around at the back, little triangles and back to Ali was good, at times we lost that final ball but it set winged free a few times and Ali kicking out worked at other times.
Does feel a little more comfortable on the ball, less nerves.

Nunez came on and got stuck in, and Gakpo did well also.

Calm professional performance for the 3 points

It became pretty obvious that Jota is a much better fit for how we want to play than Darwin at the moment.
Slot has a lot of coaching to do over the next months. If Darwin cant adapt he'll be off next summer.
I actually think Darwin is our third choice striker. If something happens to Jota, Gakpo will be coming on to replace him.

A few things I've not seen mentioned:

1. Jota's pass for the first goal was superb. The awareness to play it that angle, the timing, the precision, and pace. Sublime.

2. Slot's spoken about winning duels a lot in just his first few interviews. Both our goals came from winning duels with strength and determination.

3. I've seen a few training videos of players curling it in from a few yards over the touchline. Trent tried scoring from corners a few times. It may have just been due to the Brentford keeper's positioning, but I think were going to see these attempts pretty often, until teams start expecting them, then we'll be whipping to the back post for Virg and Ibou to lap up.

Van Dijk in the post match interview telling everyone that he's leaving next summer without saying that he's leaving was interesting.

He essentially said nothing has changed but his calm and settled. My only take on it was that talks haven't started (yet).
