Mourinho departure 'unthinkable': Inter's Branca

By Soccernet staff

May 3, 2010

Jose Mourinho's rumoured summer departure from Inter Milan is a "journalistic fantasy", said club technical director Marco Branca after the Portuguese manager steered the club to the verge of a fantastic treble.

Manager movements have been the main topic of the European rumour mill recently and Mourinho's transfer from Inter to Real Madrid has been tipped as one of the big changes this summer, particulary in the wake of Mourinho's elimination of Madrid's Spanish rivals Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals.

Mourinho will lead his Inter team into battle against newly crowned German champions Bayern Munich in the Champions League final at Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu, the place he is tipped to take charge and transform Madrid's latest batch of Galacticos into European powerhouses.

Inter are also in Coppa Italia final and they regained the upper hand in their search for a fifth consecutive Scudetto with a 2-0 win at Lazio on Sunday. Speaking after the match, Branca insisted their special manager would stay at the club where he is contracted until 2012.

"Last year Mourinho was also linked with Real Madrid,'' said Branca. "But he is happy to be with us and we are happy to have him. They are just journalistic fantasies. We are absolutely not thinking about it. Jose Mourinho's future away from Milan is unthinkable.''

Inter went into the clash at Lazio in celebratory mood having reached their first European final since 1972 with a 3-2 aggregate victory over Barcelona that has been widely credited to Mourinho's tactical nous. Goals from South American pair Walter Samuel and Thiago Motta made sure Inter kept a two-point advantage over Roma heading into the last two league games of the campaign.

"We have overcome a big hurdle but there are still two left for the Scudetto,'' said Motta. "We have taken a very important step forward. I have been fortunate to score today and that gives me confidence. We needed to win this game at all costs considering Roma had won their game at Parma.

"We arrived in Rome ready to take home three points and we have done our duty. Now we must recover and think about the Coppa Italia.''

Inter take on Roma at the Stadio Olimpico in Wednesday's Coppa Italia final. The Nerazzurri then host Chievo next before ending the season at already relegated Siena on May 16. If Inter win next weekend and Roma lose against Cagliari, Mourinho's team will capture their fifth straight league title with a match to spare.

Oh shit.....where is our name?

jose would be insane to join us given our current predicament, jose doesn't strike me a stupid. having said that he did play huth up front in a desparate attempt to win a place in the final of the CL

I think the key to the question, as always with modern football, is money. If Liverpool had new owners who were prepared to splash out unlimited sums of money, I think Mourinho would relish the challenge of turning Liverpool round. He says he doesn't like working in Italy.

I think Madrid will be his next destination.

Barcelona definitely won't be looking forward to that. It'll make La Liga quite entertaining.

Mourinho won't be going to Madrid. Pellegrini will be given another year; he has the backing of the players and is about to amass 92 points in a season.

If we've got a big pot to spend in the summer there's every chance Mourinho will come to Anfield.

Rafa will probably walk next week, so speculation will reach boiling point.

I am a little disappointed that our name is not at least somewhere in the mix.

And for the record, I think the owners would be hesitant to give Rafa anymore money considering the overall return of his last couple of 'big' name signings, perhaps it's an ulterior way of pushing him out?

I honestly don't think that Mourinho would want to join us, especially if the Real Madrid job is available. And even if it wasn't, I think he will stay at Inter. As of now, there is absolutely NOTHING we can offer him. Sorry.

I don't think anybody is suggesting that we could persuade Mourinho to join us AS OF NOW!

However with new owners in place offering oodles of cash for players and immediate start of work on the new stadium, Liverpool would be tempting for Mourinho. A sleeping giant with a fantastic international brand and wonderful tradition. I'm sure he would love to show how the Special One could win the Premier League.

True Mr Portly, but I wonder if Mourinho is patient enough to wait for us to offer him the job. As it stands now, there're so many unresolved issues. Who will the new owners be? How much will they pump into the club for transfers etc etc? Will they want Rafa to stay? Will Rafa want to stay? When will all the new owners come in? Will there be enough time to get in new players and sell the deadwood? Which of our important players will stay? Etc etc.

Will Mourinho be willing to wait while everything is resolved? What if Real sacks Pelligrini immediately after the last match and offers Jose the job? Then what? Will we take so long that Mourinho thinks, "Ah fuck it, I can't wait forever. Even if I could wait, I wouldnt have time to prepare the squad!".

Yes I agree that there are lots of factors that could stop Mourinho being photographed at Anfield holding a Liverpool shirt. Personally I'm not that worried. I would just like to see a manager at Anfield whose tactics and strategy are not so complicated that nobody can understand what they are.

IMO much would depend on the answers to the questions in your first para.above. I reckon Portly's overall assessment is probably accurate, and incidentally so do the bookies if Rafa leaves, as they have all along.

I think it is key that our manager isn't a total knobhead though.
