The argument that I remember was that it doesn't matter how many each individual scores, it's more important how many the team scores. This season we have 57 goals after 25 games, last season we had 54. We have one more point this season. So getting a 20 a season striker hasn't actually made much difference.

That wasn't the argument at all. It was that teams are far more likely to win the title if they have a player who can score about 20 league goals

So if we had one, we are more likely to win the title. Therefore I wanted us to buy one.

And we did!

However, it seems that, sadly, arguments based on elementary stats, data and very basic probability, are a bit overwhelming for some of our, er, *slower* posters

How's your Mandarin?

Not his best game, but as ever he put a real shift in today.

Really ? - I only noticed he was on the pitch when he put that header somewhere ... and that foul on that player. Did not notice him - and in fairness he looked very exhausted today.. when I did see him.

Roberto Firmino hands Liverpool huge boost as he commits to the club for 'years to come'

Roberto Firmino has handed Liverpool fans a massive boost by confirming that he is happy to stay at the club for ‘years to come’.
The Brazilian is enjoying a stellar season at Anfield, scoring 19 goals in all competitions and proving 10 assists.
Speaking to Esporte the 26-year-old confirmed that he was very happy on Merseyside and believes that the club are headed for glory under Jurgen Klopp.
Firmino said: “Liverpool are one of the greats in Europe and being able to be part of the history of such a great club is gratifying to me.
“I work hard every day to give my best and I believe that the fans, the coaching staff and the board recognise my delivery by wearing that shirt.

“I’m very happy here at Liverpool and I do not see myself out of that club for years to come.
“I believe I am living one of the best phases of my career and I owe much to the trust that the club has placed in me from the beginning.
“I feel very good here in Liverpool. I am very adapted to the city, the club, and the warmth I receive from the fans makes me even happier with the work we are producing.
“And all this support makes me even more willing to conquer great things wearing the shirt of Liverpool.”
Firmino, who has been capped 17 times for his country, outlined his intentions to see out his contract with the Reds.
The club are planning to recognise his pivotal role at the club with a new deal.

He added: “In every transfer window we hear a lot of speculation, but nothing concrete has come to me until now.
“I am very happy here at Liverpool and my thinking is to build a history with many victories and titles by that club. I have a contract with Liverpool until 2020 and I hope to keep it.”
Firmino joined Liverpool from Hoffenheim in the summer of 2015 for around £29m.
In his first couple of months at Anfield he struggled, but Brendan Rodgers’ exit and Klopp’s arrival saw the forward become a mainstay in the side, often playing across the frontline.
Firmino would score 11 goals in all competitions in his first season at Liverpool, following up with 12 goals last term. He has already easily surpassed both tallies and is on course to beat his best ever goalscoring season, when he notched 22 in all competitions for Hoffenheim in 2013/14.
Klopp has clearly had a huge influence on Firmino’s career and he paid tribute to his boss for helping him improve in England.

He said: “The arrival of Jürgen Klopp was very important for my growth within the team. Since he arrived here at Liverpool, he has changed my positioning, put me playing as a forward and that was the watershed for me here at the club.
“As I played in another role at Hoffeinheim, behind the attackers, I needed some time to adjust. But the more I play, the more I train, the more I feel comfortable acting as an attacker and things are happening in a positive way for me and the team.
“Klopp is a fantastic guy. I rate him as an extremely professional coach, perfectionist, and a winning mentality.

“He came to Liverpool after building a beautiful history in Borussia Dortmund and has done a beautiful job here in England. Since I worked for a long time in Germany, I communicate with him in German and it works very well between us. I’m sure Klopp will be marked in the history of world football for its work and achievements.”

Now call me cynical but remembering how Coutinho said he hoped to stay at Liverpool for another couple of years after signing his five year contract, I reckon Bobby could be playing out his contract and doing a Can on it.
I think the headline in the article is misleading.
Unsurprising seeing that it is the Echo

He’s always struck me as being more ‘normal’ an individual than say, Coutinho. That’s ignoring his teeth, but apart from that.
I have a feeling he’ll definitely renew his contract and stick around for a few more years. Unless our owners feel they want to make profit on him before he turns 30.

You think Firmino is lying when he says he wants to spend many more years at Liverpool ? I don't see him as that type of person .. but hey he's a footballer and they are all cunts so I may be wrong.

Anyway has this been posted before ? Prior to this weekend :

Roberto Firmino has the best goal conversion rate of all strikers in the PL with 27.8%.
Gabriel Jesus is his closest competitor with 25.8%.

Other strikers include:
Sergio Aguero - 23.6%
Alexandre Lacazette - 21.6%
Harry Kane - 21.5%
Alvaro Morata - 21.3%
Romelu Lukaku - 20.8%

I don’t think he’d be out of place in a side that’s in the CL every year rather than a club that’s competed in it twice in a decade.
I'm not sure quoting 'a decade' has any relevance though. Ditto look at United's recent PL/CL record or Chelsea's fall from grace in one season or Arsenal's two FAC recent wins ... are any of their CL records relevant TODAY ? All you can do is look at the club/team, the manager, the players, the owners and their transfer record .. today. Are they ambitious ? Or happy to tread water ?

Firmino seems to be delighted with the manager, who he has a glowing opinion of, and the club and even of the city too.

yep, deffo the more 'normal'

i love firmino btw

Well at least we know he ain't pushing for a move because his mate just fucked off.

He could easily have used that excuse, so I'm taking what he says at face value. That would all change if either of the big two Spanish sides came in for him but he's not on their summer radar if you believe the press regarding Hazard etc, so I reckon he's here for a while yet.

It's the article that says he wants to stay for many more years. His actual quote says that he expects to fulfill his contract which runs to 2020. That's two and a half years so I suppose that could constitute "years to come" technically, which he is also quoted as saying.
Maybe if he signs an extended contact then I will start to believe that he is happy to stay long term. That probably relies on us being somewhat successful

We're all getting older. Two and a half years seems like ages to a twenty odd year old but a mere blinking of an eye to an old sod like me.

Liverpool's best chance of winning the league is if every other club's best players move to different leagues

We're a stepping stone. As soon as a top team is interested he'll leave.

What top team? We're not fucking Southampton.

PSG, Real, Barca, Madrid, Bayern, maybe Juve if he fancies Italy.

And here? The Arabs, maybe.

It's not like there's a load of 'top teams' who would actually want him. He's not prolific or good enough for most of them to be interested. Who would he replace at any of those?
