A number of good posters, whom I like and whose views I respect, seem to be seriously suggesting that Rafa - whom I defended longer than most - could work with a DOF. I respectfully but totally disagree. Compromise has never been the man's middle name and I'm afraid I don't believe for one single second that such a combo could ever work.
Yup. I am a huge Rafa fan and believe that if he learned to focus on coaching he could be one of the very best and all time greats, especially with respect to the Champions League. But if he ends up coming back to us, you can count the time in seconds after we win something decent before he shoots the first shot against Commoli.

Even i had a little chuckle at that suggestion.

Just concentrate on managing your team Rafa.

Oh.
Haha ;D

Ungrateful?! So what should we be like? Should we ignore Benitez's failings, want him as our manager and build the whole club around how he likes to work forever just because he won us a few trophies 5 years ago?

Neither should we go to the other extreme, e.g.calling Istanbul and the 2006 F.A.Cup Final "a few trophies" as if they come free in cereal packets.

The CL was an amazing achievement but sorry, it doesn't guarantee Benitez God like status, regardless of what else he did afterwards, forever.

GEd won us 5 trophies in 1 year.

Should he ever be welcomed back?

Hell no.

Thank you for some wonderful memories Rafa but I don't want you back as we would never win the league under your tactics.

A bit more respectful richey is what I think. No, not forever, but the man gave us the best experiences we've had in 20 odd years, won the CL, got to four semi finals, another final. gave us our closest run at the League, and did this while navigating a horrendous political situation.

So yes, more respect less sniping (not you...)

Fair enough mate. I'm not as big a fan of him as some but I certainly respect what he did for us. i just wish he had done more really and done less of the off field stuff.

Well quite. If it had been someone else publicly saying he would like another manager's job I am not sure the reaction would be quite as kind

When people slag off Rafa for speaking out too much, i think that they must conveniently forget that he was working under H&G.
Agreed - we'd never have heard anywhere near as much of Rafa speaking out if it hadn't been for H&G.

That's because if it had been almost any other business group or anyone with even a small amount of business respect, Rafa would have been on his bike the report on him opening his trap could get printed in the papers.

You're always wrong about the highlighted bit...
CL winner 2005, final 2007 and semis in 2008.

Rafa had a very good record in Europe.
Most of us wanted the league first. He failed and should shut up now.

“When I went to Italy, I knew that I would be a Coach and not a manager… but when you are a Coach you have to be in tune with your director of sport, and it's not just a question of models, but of people,†Benitez told AS.

“Without doubt the role of manager is better because in the end the Coaches pay for their own mistakes and those of the director of sport, while the manager only pays for his own mistakes.

“But I won't ask for this at my next club. I will ask for a project, for respect of my work, and to know what the objectives are. If things go well, they ask more of you. If things go badly they tell you that they have given you all the means to do well and that it's you who hasn't succeeded.â€

Interesting.

However, even if he does mean it I'd give him about 10 seconds max before he started trying to work round it.

Well is Rafa now saying he paid for his own mistakes?
Very interesting, in the last 2 years at Liverpool, he kept saying he was paying for G & H mistakes.

Please Rafa, give us a break

Again, I'll never get the disrespect and ingratitude. It's a "Thanks for the CL now F-off" kind of mentality. Good luck. Sorry three CL semi-finals, not four. Big deal

Remember what it was like before? Ged Houllier got the Quarters one year againsy Bayern leverkusen (the giants!) and let it out in his pants - That was what it was like back then. We had no esteem, no winning mentality, we felt like also rans.

I won't forget that it was Rafa, that took us back to the top again. He wasn't perfect but only an ingrate would nit pick his record IMHO.

Ohh I get it now...it does get really impressive, that makes: 1CL, 2 finals, 3 semi-finals and 4 quarter-finals :🙂. You just cant read it like that but its still a good record as I said.
Where in my post did I show disrespect and ingratitude?

Did he leave the club in 2007 or was it him that took his to being not good enough to qualify for even the UEFA Cup ? (bearing in mind Pompey would have had the spot were it not for UEFA licence problems)

He had one bad year Rosco in how many? definitely had his faults but he built the club up from a very average side to one of the best in Europe. How can you forget this Rosco? How can you dismiss it?

That deserves respect from me, no matter what. we'll never agree on this, and I can understand that - but the snide remarks and constant disparagement just shows a complete lack of perspective on what was achieved - with shabby owners and a dire political situation to boot.

I'll go one more and say those who write off Rafa's achievements and slag him off are unrealistic people who expect everything, and piss on a manager when he only achieves "some" but not all things in the real world....

lechacal, of course your comments are disrespectful, and that's your right. But I wouldn't deride a Liverpool manager who brought me (and you) the happiest time as a Liverpool fan in twenty odd years. I wouldn't be that fickle.

I remember running home from work on Wends and Tuesdays, turning on the box, jumping for joy when we beat Chelsea in the CL, twice, when we went to Athens, and of course Istanbul. I remember my honeymoon, when I sneaked off to watch the second leg in 2005 vs Chelsea and the Garcia goal. What a great time.

People really should be ashamed of themselves for deriding the man who brought us these things. It's really ungrateful. Makes such people look like forgetful, spoiled brats.

I changed my avatar from Jari to Rafa, just because I was so ticked off at him being knocked so often. Sheesh, the man loves the club. I wish others were like him.

There was no way of AVOIDING that off the field stuff mate. Any other manager would have had to do the same, or just head off into the sunset. He had to engage in politics with those owners, or go. And we all knew Parry was a liability on transfers etc, and most people here were delighted when rafa took him on and won.

I do think he's too full of excuses at times though.

RAFA BENITEZ is being lined up for a shock Premier League return at Aston Villa.

The Spaniard was squeezed out at Liverpool by the club's American owners last year and was later sacked as Inter Milan coach.

But he is still highly-regarded after winning the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005.

Villa have drifted into the relegation fight under boss Gerard Houllier.

Cool. Another manager who wouldn't mind losing 3-0 to us, of all clubs. 🙂
