What is the current state of Portland? Just curious?
Rapid gentrification, great coffee shops. Really annoying thing called covid, and an intense amount of tattoos and an unremarkable level of political activism by the standards of continental europe. 99 percent of it has been fine, and when I say fine I mean dominated by tech, unaffordable housing, a heroin then a oxy epidemic, and homelessness... None of which anyone gave a fuck about.
But of late there have been protests and a small amount of outright rioting and property destruction that inevitably follows such things, and there has been an unbelievable focus on these things by right wing media. It is much diminished now, but it was very confined amidst a general normalcy, and it was overwhelmingly peaceful.
I have a friend in capitol hill in Seattle, the epicenter of the protests there, and two in Portland, and 99percent of those cities has been completely normal, and the outsized focus on them for disingenuous reasons has been a source of much amusement. Kindof like the description of new york as a ghost town, or the ludicrous idea of no go zones, or all of these hyped up nonsenses that deliberately miss the point.
Bingo. Live in the area and have around 10-15 friends and colleagues near the epicenter of the protests and the same reaction. The thing which worried us more was the forest fire. I am not saying the protests didn't happen and definitely do not condone the damage to property or looting. But it wasn't close to as bad as it was made out in the news media.
There is also this image that everyone in Portland is incredibly liberal. Not the case. Liberals definitely dominate. However, it is also the whitest city in US. It also has a racist past and there are elements of both extremes in the city. A lot of the problems we face are due to the tensions between these extreme factions.

That's generally what happens with rioting, it's reported that entire cities are burning when it's usually just in one or two areas. I've experienced it in Belfast and Athens, although there was that one time that we got back after lunch and our lab was filled with tear gas.
Here's a curious thing - QAnon say there are paedos in power and the media and tech companies are covering up for them.
And now the media and tech companies won't even mention the Hunter Biden laptop.
Who cares what you want to call it, what it is was him instantly shutting down the reporter without letting him finish his question by specifying what controversy he was referring to, because he was that petrified of just the words being out there.
The Biden clip showed exactly what happened, and it was bad. The Trump clip is edited together from different events, overlaid with sinister music, a narrator telling you what you're supposed to think is going on, captions telling you what you're supposed to think is going on, and at the end you have no actual idea what happened but assume it must be something bad because orange man bad.
