This was the big occasion which came out of nowhere. Paisley wasn't the only one not to have rated St.Etienne massively highly beforehand - I myself had seen them play live in France (a league game in Bordeaux) a couple of seasons earlier and, though they won, they weren't any great shakes - but there was definitely some kind of magic in the air at Anfield and it seemed as though St.Etienne were feeding off the atmosphere as much as we did. I wasn't there, but it was on TV and you could absolutely tell something special was going on.
That, incidentally, was Old Faithful's first season. 😎
