Benteke - BOOOOOO the puns

That's not my memory of us playing best last season, it was the few games Sturridge played. When sterling played upfront in games we looked devoid of any sort of goal threat.

We also went on a 13 game unbeaten streak.

Not exactly, he played upfront for the first time against Utd in December and we lost, after that though we went unbeaten until February when Sturridge came back for the first time.

Liverpool are set to meet Christian Benteke's £32.5m release clause
Rodgers took the number of new signings at Liverpool to six last week when he paid Southampton £12.5m for England international right back Nathaniel Clyne.

And he shows no sign of letting up with Villa’s Belgium international the next player he wants to arrive at Anfield.
Benteke, 24, has scored 49 goals in 101 appearances since arriving at Villa Park from Genk for £7m almost three years ago.

He has since emerged as a target for Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool - who are set to win the race with Benteke setting his heart on a move to Merseyside.

Liverpool have struggled to replace Luis Suarez since he moved to Barcelona last summer and Rodgers believes Benteke could provide the goals they've lacked since then.

Benteke is poised to be Rodgers' seventh summer signing and takes Liverpool's spending past the £80m mark.

How Benteke could look in a Liverpool shirt
Roberto Firmino James Milner, Danny Ings, Joe Gomez, Adam Bogdan and Clyne have already completed moves to Merseyside.

Meanwhile, former Reds defender Glen Johnson is in talks with West Ham over a return to Upton Park after he was released this summer.

32.5m?! FFS.

I hope I'm proved wrong, I hope he's an incredible striker who fires us up, but I think I he's massively overpriced.

If we were playing 20m I'd be reasonably happy. As it is were paying almost top level prices for a mid level striker.

Top-level prices for a striker are are 50m+. I agree that the 32m seems too high, but if there is a clear plan for his role (and I do think he can fit - much more mobile than given credit for) then I think this can work.

If we pay 32 million for him then our transfer committee needs to be disbanded with immediate effect. Come back Rick Parry all is forgiven

How is 32.5mill too high for a striker that has averaged 1 in 2 over 3 seasons in our league? Granted he may not fit our style, but you'd have thought a striker with those numbers would be commanding larger fee than 32.5mill.
Obviously they're different sorts of players, but on goals alone he's on par with Aguero's sort of numbers, and I doubt they'd value him at 32.5mill. And it's arguable that Benteke would score more than his 1 in 2 in a good team?

I've no idea if Benteke would work for us or not, but the figure is a distraction. He's a much much better player than Carroll, Lukaku, Soldado, Torres, that have all gone for around that figure if not higher.

If this report in the Express had any truth to it, it would have been written by Paul Joyce.

As it stands, as reported by the Echo, by Dominic King and probably Barrett, Andy Hunter and anyone else reputable, we want Benteke but won't pay the release clause, and Villa won't sell for less than the release clause.

Unless the reputable journalists publish something different, hysterical bullshit like this can be ignored.

That doesn't mean we spunk 32 million on him though.
This deal fucking reeks of desperation and the fact that he's probably Rodgers number 1 target pisses me off more.

Who cares if he's overpriced if he's the best striker who's willing to come to us

We should do because he doesn't fit into our style of play or thought of play even. We don't have wi gets who can cross, he's hardly nimble around the box. He just doesn't fit, you have to be blind to not recognise that

If we sign him then it means we must have plan as to how we're gonna play him. Nobody at the club is stupid enough to make that mistake twice. Really find it hard to believe that people think otherwise.

We're probably waiting for him to say he wants to leave. That is the only way Villa will drop their valuation imho.
He'll still cost at least 25 mill.

He missed 10 league games last season through injury and 12 league games the season before! Aside from the injury concerns I think £32m is way over his true value. £20m maximum IMO and even then with some reservations. I still maintain Charlie Austin for £15m is much better value.

Imagine thinking that Liverpool Football Club's two most expensive players ever are Andy Carroll and Christian Benteke.

And we wonder why we're not in the top 4.

I agree with most of that (especially regarding Austin). I just think people are over-reacting to Benteke as a option.

I thought Charlie Austin had an even worse injury record ? I may be wrong.

He has missed 20 league games in 3 years. 12 of them because of a serious injury (achilles tendon).

There is no concern about his injury record imho. The problem is the fee and how Rodgers will set up the team, iow fit him into the side.

42 goals in 89 league games (7337 mins). Scored in 32 of those.

2 barren spells of 9 games (Round 8 - 16 --> didn't score between Round 5 to 20 but was absent with injuries for 5 of the matches)in 13/14 and 10 games (Round 18-27) in 14/15.

2 hat tricks - Sunderland, QPR
6 braces - Liverpool, Everton (twice), Arsenal, Norwich, Sunderland

Can I just commend you on having a pic of Dr. Fun as your avatar. I spent many years standing just to his right on the Kop. A top man.

Fuck off.
I'm going all Graham.

Sherwood has come out and said they're not going to sell him.

Good.

Sherwood who doesn't get a say on the matter if his release clause is met, or if their money grabbing owner accepts a lower bid? He's such a dickhead

I thought Charlie Austin had an even worse injury record ? I may be wrong.
He had a bad knee injury about 4 seasons ago which kept him out for about 8 months (I think) but since then he's hardly missed more than a handful of games. However, he did fail a medical 2 seasons ago whn Hull tried to sign him.....but whatever the supposed problem is hasn't led to him missing many matches since.
