FURIOUS Yossi Benayoun today accuses Rafa Benitez of making his life a misery at Liverpool.

In an exclusive News of the World interview, the Israeli midfielder blasts Benitez for forcing out of Anfield and insists the Spaniard:

*NEVER treated him with any respect.

*DESTROYED his confidence.

*TRIED to break him.

*ORDERED him to find another club.

Manager Benitez was sacked by Liverpool at the end of the season after a disastrous trophyless campaign which ended with the Reds failing to even qualify for the Champions League.

And Benayoun, 30, reveals the truth about his volatile relationship with the man who has now replaced Jose Mourinho as boss of European Cup winners Inter Milan.

"Everyone asks me why I left Liverpool," said Benayoun, who joined Premier League champions Chelsea in a £5.5million move earlier this month.

"There is only one reason - Rafa Benitez.

"I agreed to join Chelsea before Roy Hodgson was appointed Liverpool's new manager.

"It's a dream for me such a fantastic club have given me this opportunity.

"But I want Liverpool fans to know the truth and for them to know I made up my mind to leave a long time ago because of Benitez.

"He never treated me with the respect I deserved. If I played well, I never felt he gave me credit.

"When I scored, I still expected to be out of the team the next game.

"And when the fans wanted me to play, Benitez told me he couldn't understand why."

Booed

Benayoun, who scored nine goals for Liverpool last season, added: "There are many examples of him treating me badly.

"On two occasions early last season, against Fulham and Lyon, the fans booed when I was subbed.

"They thought I was playing well but Benitez told me he was surprised the fans booed because I was not good enough.

"It was as if the fans' reaction worked against me. The situation got worse afterwards.

"He told me I was a better player as a substitute instead of starting in the team.

"Then, when we played Birmingham after I hadn't started a game for a month, he didn't tell me I was starting until two hours before the game.

"He tried to destroy my confidence. You can't treat a player like this and expect him to be happy.

"I felt so unhappy but, out of respect to the club, I never spoke out. The players and the people at the top of the club knew how I felt.

"I don't want to speak on behalf of other players at Liverpool, but people know what happened to Albert Riera and Xabi Alonso.

"It was the same for me. Benitez tried to break me like he broke Riera.

"I was sure he wanted me to attack him in the Press during the season so he could turn the fans against me, so I kept quiet.

"I felt he was waiting for me to make a mistake so he could use it against me.

Deal

"On the day before the final game of last season at Hull, Benitez pulled me to one side after training and said: 'You will not be in the squad for this game. Thank you for your three years of service, now you can call your agent to do a deal with another club.'

"That's when Chelsea made an offer and the deal was done before Benitez left."

BENAYOUN: Signing on at Chelsea
But Benayoun admits his relationship with Benitez deteriorated on the FIRST day of last season.

"The previous season when we finished second in the Premier League, I was happy with my performance in the final months but I was not sure if the manager thought I was a good player," he added.

"I told Benitez I would go if he wanted, but he told me I was important and he would give me a new contract, which I signed.

"But then for the first game of the new season I wasn't in the team again. The manager ignored me when I wanted to know why.

"After he ignored me for a long time, he needed me for Europe when Ryan Babel was suspended.

"I said: 'You need me now and I will always do my best.'

"I scored against Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-final. It was a really emotional moment for me. The fans could see what it meant to me.

"I couldn't say at the time, but I knew this was my last season at Liverpool and I wanted a special end.

"I thought: 'No matter how the manager is treating me, I'm showing the fans the club is in my heart.'

"I knew I had to get away from Benitez. A lot of people at Liverpool treated me well and asked me to stay, but I could not turn down such a massive club as Chelsea.

"I could not risk waiting to see if Benitez kept his job.

"The club said they understood why I was unhappy and promised they'd let me leave in the summer if an offer came while Benitez was manager.

Privilege

"It is good for Liverpool Benitez has gone, but it was too late for me.

"I know everyone working there will be a lot happier and I believe Roy Hodgson is a good choice.

"It was a privilege for me to play for such a great club in front of great fans. I thought I would be staying for a lot longer."

Benayoun realises he faces as tough a time forcing his way into the Chelsea side.

He said: "I'm not stupid. I know Chelsea have many great players and it will be hard to play in the team every week.

"But what's important for me is I know I will be treated with respect.

"Carlo Ancelotti is a fantastic manager and he knows how to treat players."

If he was that arsed he would of stayed when Benitez had left, he hadn't signed no contract with Chelsea. Money is king, i'm not arsed he left just don't see what the point of the interview is to be honest.

I hope Yossi gets the respect he thinks he deserves at Chelsea
I hope he disappears into nothing.

To be fair to him he probably just wanted to let people know he didn't 'quit' the club and a sinking ship but left due to the issues he faced cos of Rafa. He says the contract was signed already to let him go Chelsea so fair enough again.

He is however pretty deluded if he thinks he will be playing regular or even at all at Chelsea, he will be in a worse situation then he was here

'I could not wait risking to see is Benitez kept his job'

Yeah, cos I'm sure they'd have waited until 23.59 on 31st August to sack Rafa, leaving Yossi no time to sign for another team.

"I felt so unhappy but, out of respect to the club, I never spoke out"

Cheers for that Yossi.

Rafa in shit man-management shocka.

Hopefully Roy can at least get the players playing for one another.

since this only happened to Yossi under Rafa's tenure, we can assume he's just making it up ...
I believe it happened , i just don't understand why when Benitez left he could of said to Chelsea circumstances had changed and he wanted to give Hodgson a chance. He hadn't signed anything legally binding with Chelsea.

Well, needless to say he could've been more of a gentleman about it and left all the melodrama out, however I think it's fair enough to allow players the right to let the fans know why they left.

All managers have players that don't like them, and if managers don't get results, we learn about it. Big fucking deal. I'm not going to dismiss the comments out of hand, but I'm not going to take them as an accurate account of what happened either.

I think Rafa was more mechanical than Machiavellian, but I'm sure to squad players it may seem otherwise. I don't see why I should care terribly at this point, he's gone, let it be.

I'm glad Rafa's gone. His man management skills left a lot to be desired. Only our top players got on with him (barely). Almost everyone else was frozen out and treated with disrespect.

Yossi was an alright squad player. Did well enough in his time here. Showed a bit of class not speaking out whilst Rafa was here. Not overly fussed he's gone though. So long as we bring someone creative in who doesn't dwell on the ball, we'll be better off.

It shows class now to have the bare minimum of professionalism required to not talk shit about your boss while on 70k a week?!

It would have shown class if he hadn't elaborated on all of this unnecessarily.

"I want liverpool supporters to know I didn't want to leave the cub, but it became clear my situation was untenable and I was asked to leave. Thankyou for your support over the last couple years, I'll always remember the club fondly"

That's the sort of boring shit he should have said.

Yossi had a fantastic end to the season before last, and his frustration seems pretty well warranted. Reira's lack of game toe was also puzzling to many this season. I think this is grist to the mill that it was time for Rafa to go. I'm glad Yossi said this.

who knows ... he didn't say anything last year which shows class, as he was obviously being frozen out for no real reason.

redshrek - i agree with you ... i don't know why he couldn't have stayed if rafa was in fact 'the' problem. perhaps he decided not to for the same reason torres will leave next year ... better chance to win.

Wasn't the main reason Riera was hounded out was he planted one on young Pacheco.

Boring shit as you said. I prefer to know the truth. Even if it's his version of it. Though it measures up quite well when you hear accounts from players past and present who've worked with Rafa.

Anyhow, I'm glad he's gone now, and i'm not fussed about Benny either.

Class or no class, I just think it was better for him to speak his mind now that he's left and not whilst he/Rafa was still here. That's all.
Hardly suprising either being as we all know what Benitez is like.

Benitez was a prick to his players..

but Benayoun always came out and suggested if he doesnt start all the time then he would move on. Communication between player and manager was obviously pretty poor. Benayoun seems to think he should be an automatic starter anywhere.. Truth is... most of the time you can easily forget that he is even on the pitch.

Not fussed that he has gone...

I think Yossi is bang on tbh, lets face it, it's only confirming what most have said for a long time regards Rafa's man-management skills. And most of this with Yossi is common knowledge now anyway, he's only filling in the gaps. I can't believe the amount of posters who've jumped in either Rafa's defence or on the attack over this.

I don't think what he said is wrong exactly, but I'm not sure how he's shown class. Since when did doing what common sense and basic decency dictates you should do become classy?

I'm with Benayoun on this one.
Rafa's was out of order. This isn't the first time we hear players complaining about him.
I was expecting more of a reaction from the players when he left but I think they all felt the same, he had to go.
I agree. I dont want to get into another pointless long winded RCDNW vs RCDNR debate but Rafa was shit at man management and it shows. Just because most players dont have the mouth to say it (althout Murphy and others have intimated it) doesnt mean that he leaves too many tears behind him. It makes me wonder what Aurelio and Pellebastard do that makes them so immune, its certainly not their performances.

God this kind of thing makes me really dislike Rafa.

It's not the Liverpool way and sickens me.

Yossi could have been so much more.
