Gareth Barry's somewhat surprising move to Manchester City has taken another decisive move forward this afternoon, as Sky Sports News is reporting that the England international is set to undergo a medical this afternoon.
Should that run as smoothly as anticipated, then the broadcaster understands that it is likely that Barry will be confirmed as a Manchester City player within the next 48 hours, after a fee, reported to be £11 million, has been agreed between the clubs.
The only possible snag that might delay the switch is the England's squad's lengthy flight out to Kazakhstan for their forthcoming World Cup qualifier.
Villa manager Martin O'Neill is yet to speak publicly about the deal, though the thought of such a talismanic player departing to a club who didn't qualify for European competition cannot sit easily with the Northern Irishman, who has in the past insisted that he had no problem with the player leaving for a club in the Champions League.
City, of course, are backed by the fantastic wealth of the Abu Dhabi Group, and this is unlikely to be the Citizens last piece of business in a summer where the scope of their ambition may become truly clear.
