The timing of the Suarez and Carroll signings didn't do us any favours at all. Torres left and we had money burning a hole in our pocket and ended up over paying for Andy. We all know this! I can see why Kenny wanted him. Big, strong, mobile (yes he can move), age on his side and it didn't harm at all that he was English. I presume Kenny had visions of Andy spear heading our attack with players running off him. A brute force who would provide us with another option.
On the same day we bought Luis Suarez. We didn't really know what to expect form Suarez. We had youtube vids, the odd Ajax game and the World Cup to go on but the fear was always there as you never know how players from the dutch league will adapt here. We're we getting a RVN (for example) or an Alfonso Alves. Now, we all know Suarez took to the league like a duck to water and suddenly the Carroll signing made less sense. Where did he fit in? Suarez was a breath of fresh air the ball was kept on the deck and our pass and move game (Maxi and Raul being instrumental) flourished. I don't think anyone (even Kenny) expected Suarez to be as good as he turned out to be. I can understand why we bought both at the time (A gamble on Suarez alone to replace Torres was risky) but if we had known how excellent Suarez would be then we could of held off buying Carroll. If Kenny still wanted him we could have come back in for him in the summer for a deflated price than we paid obviously. Or use the money to buy players to accommodate Suarez as it looks like Kenny chased players to suit Andy all summer, yet isn't playing him.
Kenny needs to decide what he wants and what system (I hate to use that word) he wan't to deploy. Are we going for the sweeping football (ala Fulham away last season) or going back to basics with wingers and a big man in the box. Kenny seems to be jumbling up both idea's at the same time and it's frustrating. Carroll on, wingers off for example.
It is fair to say it was unfortunate timing that both of them arrived to the club at the same? It's easy say that in hindsight I know.
