Not sure if anyone cares, but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been stripped of Arsenal captaincy and publicly shamed by the club; it's hard to see a way back for him after this.

A genuinely funny photo (Sadio looks so sharp in comparison), but I think Arteta is making a big mistake here. Was it not his decision to 1) give Aubemeyang the captaincy, and 2) give him a huge 3-year contract extension at 32? Now it looks like he's burned the bridges with his highest-paid player and Arsenal will now have do deal with another Ozil situation, where they will most likely have to subsidize Auba's wages for the next 2.5 years to play somewhere else. Arteta probably thinks he's doing the right thing enforcing the discipline and some Arsenal fans will probably take his side, but he seems to have a trail of unnecessary conflicts – Guendouzi, Ozil, Saliba and now Auba. My guess is that Arteta is insecure in his own authority and tends to overreact.

Don't know about Saliba, but Guendouzi and Ozil were dickheads. Guendouzi was a prick who wasn't that good at football, and Ozil was the laziest player around from before Arteta's time.
You can't have the captain of the club breaking rules 3 times without suffering the consequences. And remember, Klopp was ice cold when it came to dealing with Sakho for his multiple indisciplines. It was a case of telling him he's never playing again, find a club and fuck off. And he was a mainstay in our defence during our Europa League run.
Arteta's also obviously not doing this on his own. His club will have been very much part of the discussion about Aubameyang.
I personally thought he was a shit captain for them as well, so this might have been the excuse they wanted?

Guendouzi may have been a prick - but he was a talented CM who has already been part of the int'l French set up. I think he's far better than you're giving him credit for and he was only fucked off after he opened his mouth ... just like with Saliba, who's one of the highest rated young French CBs in the last few years.

Ozil was always 'lazy' but if you've worked with Mourinho and not only survived, but prospered, why couldn't he do it with Arteta? He definitely has come off as lazier etc in the last few years and seems to have dropped a level or two.

Honestly, I think both Ozil and Auba were a) terrible contracts and b) the right moves from ARteta. Any club needs to be have the right 'leaders' to prosper, and they can easily carry an Auba if there's larger, stronger personalities who are leaders in the club. Auba wouldn't pull these stunts at Liverpool - but that's also why he's not at Liverpool, because Klopp wants players where the likelihood of this happening is minimal (Sakho example).

Oh well, Arteta - to me - comes off as a young manager who clearly has a long way to go to learn his trade ...

I mean, I never thought Auba was captain material - he is clearly more of a free spirit, someone who thrives because of his talent, not so much his discipline or application. He’s also someone who needs to feel loved and appreciated and tends to sulk when he doesn’t get that.

So could you possibly devise a worse way to handle him than to first give him the responsibility of a captaincy (which he probably didn’t particularly want), then the big contract, then publicly burn bridges because he did something a captain shouldn’t do and then get stuck with a disillusioned player on a huge long-term contract that no potential buyer will be willing to match? And to add to all that is that they actually badly need a striker - exactly someone like Aubameyang if not for this unnecessary conflict.

Arsenal are like Barca light in recent years, overpaying for mercenariy types in the 1st inst and end up paying the real price long term.

He’s a weapon. It’s not the first time he’s done this and what else would he expect?

You love to see it. Failing players on fat contracts whilst the club continues to suffer from lack of hospitality revenue whilst out of Europe

I can't believe how bad Arsenal are in some respects... David Luiz, Willian, Aubameyang and Özil... Some terrible contracts in all that lot. When did we last hand out such an obviously bad bunch of contracts? After we sold Suarez?

The mistake was giving him the captaincy/not selling him earlier and reinvesting.

Arteta is trying to establish a new culture with younger players and giving that twat the captaincy just undermined everything set out to achieve. He's frequently late and just a complete tit behind the scenes. It's all very Arsenal.

He'll be back as Arsenal's main #9 in no time.

Remember the incident with Xhaka when he had the captains armband?

Willian was as bad as it gets, he properly stole a living didn't he.

Losing Ramsey and Sanchez to free's as well don't forget.

Our recent mistakes have been more about injuries - e.g. new contracts to Sturridge and Lallana who then barely kicked a ball until they left on free transfers.
Could say the same for the Ox as well. I'm more inclined to give a pass to Matip and Gomez as they didn't cost us much in fees and they are well worth their places when fit, Matip especially.
Keita was another costly mistake in hindsight, but his injury record before joining us was nothing like what it's been since.
But I'm struggling to remember the last time we threw serious money at someone who turned out to be shit and we ended up paying them to do one. That happened a lot pre Klopp.

Aubameyang's on record as saying Klopp was instrumental in his development as a player, so I wondered whether Klopp might go in for him when he left Dortmund. I guess we now know why that never happened.

In regards to that photo, to be fair, I remember reading somewhere that the reason he dressed like that was because his luggage (and consequently, his suit) was lost on the flight over.

It would have been a private flight. They don't lose luggage on private flights. You pretty much take it to the plane yourself.

They really have had a lot of shitty captains.

2007–2008 William Gallas (FRA) - went to Spurs
2008–2011 Cesc Fabregas (ESP) - ended up at Chelsea
2011–2012 Robin van Persie (NED) - went to United
2012–2014 Thomas Vermaelen (BEL) - barely played
2014–2016 Mikel Arteta (ESP) -
2016–2018 Per Mertesacker (GER) -
2018–2019 Laurent Koscielny (FRA)
2019 Granit Xhaka (SUI) - hated by the fans
2019–2021 Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (GAB) - stripped of the role

Yeah, I read that too, but how hard is it to find a tux or a suit in a city if you have a couple of hours and unlimited helpers and money? It sounds like an excuse they came out after he was pilloried for that look.

There's a reason none of the elite clubs signed him despite having all the characteristics of a great striker.

The baggage that comes with Auba is will known - especially during his time at Dortmund.

Dortmund had a preseason camp in Dubai few years back - Auba rocks up with a group of 10 or so mates & asks the club to pay for their stay at the team hotel.

Dortmund declined and so Auba took off with his mates and missed a portion of preseason.

The worst thing Arsenal did was giving him a huge contract recently - again, none of the elite clubs were ever going to sign him on a big contract (with his age now also playing a part). Once he got his big contract, he's been not even close to the player he was prior.

Put in him at any other elite club and there's no chance he's even a fitting choice as Vice Captain.
