If Thiago and Shaqiri don't give Klopp food for thought, I give up. We need at least one of them in the team, because our play has become really stagnant and predictable.
Thiago will be in the team, were just easing him back

Shaqiri I've no clue what he's done wrong though

Isn't hindsight lovely.

It's not bad. You know, in an historical sort of way, it's quite unavoidable. Another not-bad thing is relatively sane real-time observation without tantrums and 'other forum melt-down, tee-hee' melt downs. Get a grip people. You're holding yourselves up for the ridicule you're still, in that thread, holding other fans up for. At least be consistent and self-aware.

I don't remember throwing any tantrums during this match to be honest, just observations about our poor play and lack of intent in the first half. It's a game we'd struggle to come away with many plaudits considering the opposition and the first half display was way below par. We shouldn't have had to play so many first team players to win comfortably and the fact that we did play so many shows our current poor form. I'm not sure the way we played would have given any of our players renewed confidence or belief but we're through which is the main thing. It is weird that you claim to not give a shit about whether we went through or not but do give a shit about what is said about it.

Coo, what a surprise. Dry your eyes, believers to doubters. This thread has had a mare. Put it in the vault under the category 'embarrassing'. After a CL win, a super cup win, a world club win, a premier league win, two incredible seasons, and the first dodgy period during an injury crisis and you can smell the naked fear. Incredible. Absolutely incredible.

Pot/ kettle macca

Problem for Shaq is..is that he's becoming quite adept at these 25-30 minute cameo's. Play the cute deft through ball, little dinks here and there. useful player to come on and pick the lock. Villa for me threw the towel in with their line up. We spluttered a bit first half but the result was inevitable given their line up.

Maybe you weren't among them. Did you consider that, even if you couldn't recognise that? How strange, at this stage, the defensiveness.
Well you quoted my post so what else was i supposed to think other than your comments were directed at me? If not then quote the person or persons your criticisms were aimed at. I'm not really interested in arguments on the internet as they're usually pointless but i quite like a decent discussion now and then so why don't we do that instead?

All I got from watching that game was that we desperately need to buy a defender.

I want to stand by Rhys Williams but he just hasn't got the pace over the first 10 yards. And that's where it counts, by the time he's got his motor running he's 2-3 yards behind. Looked good for the first few games but that lack of pace and not having great upperbody strength is a serious problem. The likes of Rashford and others could leave him behind. It will be a problem if Matip doesn't get and stay fit.

Of course, I think everyone wants him to do well but the kid just isn't ready, mentally or physically.
Something radical needs to happen if he wants a future at Liverpool. Pace is a difficult thing to improve on.

Positioning and anticipation can sometimes compensate for pace as a centre back but the way we play with our high line will always leave you vulnerable if you haven't got speed. With Fabinho playing in defence that prevents us stopping dangerous through balls in the first place by closing down space in midfield as he's excellent at that. Not much we can do about in until van dijk , gomez or matip are fit again.

Rhys is a lot slower than Fabinho, Matip and the rest. I'm genuinely surprised by how slow he is considering his age and the level he's at. It's not the first time he's been caught out either. It's quite obvious that Klopp doesn't rate Philips and Williams, so it makes me wonder why we haven't brought someone in?
Seriously, Caulker would have been a better option. Can't we even loan someone?

Klopp seems to have an aversion to big squads and i reckon he'd rather get by with what we've got until the established defenders are back fit again. The problem for both Williams and Phillips is because they lack pace our style of defending doesn't suit them and a decent ball in behind them could cause trouble. This is worse when Allison isn't playing as he sweeps up better than both our other goalkeepers. We don't use the loan system to our advantage at all when it comes to bringing playets in and I don't know why.

That meltdown thread is full of quotes from the manc fans overreacting wildly to every setback. And yet most other threads here this season have just as crazy nonsense in them. And there's no self-awareness. So you can forget the abuse towards me - I don't bother to stay in the thread to read it so you're wasting your time - but I'd suggest those of you who've been in this state for some time: take a moment to regain at least a little perspective. Other clubs' fans are laughing their heads off at you.

Rhys got caught flat footed for the goal, he was too tight, too high up the pitch, allowed the turn and got left for dead, but he won't be the first or last. Positioning and reading the game comes with experience. Sami was never remotely quick, but he didn't need to be, he only got caught out a few times.

And for the record, our defense has been left for dead a few times this season and it's not always been the inexperienced players who were the culprits, we're lucky we usually have a Worldy between the sticks, because it's been a fair few times now that Allison has bailed us out in those situations.

Rhys hasn't been bad at all. His aerial presence is good, he's usually straight into challenges and wins them and his technical ability is decent.

We need a defender, but for a kid who's come from nowhere, he's done pretty well and he'll have a career here or somewhere else. It was a bad error but a kid error. Considering the amount of football he's been forced to play, without the usual benefit of years in the youth teams and then gradual step-ups in loan moves, he's done exceptionally well and for the most part, hasn't looked too out of place.

The criticism he's had on here is laughable really, coming from fans who've backed Koumetio previously to step in, when he's looked even further short of being anywhere near ready for first team action.

We've had 'professionals' offer significantly less In recent years

Ultimately were probably In our best shape I'm my lifetime to blood youth , were boss , You can (should) afford some inexperience when they're surrounded by winners of everything.

Imagine Jones playing under podge , he'd have sunk and likely be on loan at Hull or somewhere right now , or even Jones playing under Klopp 3/4 years back , we've got a great ecosystem for players to develop.

Remember when Carra and Matteo got thrown in at the deep end under similar circs. Two own goals for Carra against the mancs, became one of the best centre halves we've ever had. Matteo went to Leeds and captained them for a decade. Think it's a bit early to be having a go at any of our young defenders.

Before we even look at and start scapegoating Williams, we should be asking questions of the more senior players further forward. I'm as convinced as anybody that we need another centre-half but that has not been our problem recently, as picked up 2 points from a possible 9. It wasn't last either as struggled to get behind a line of sprogs-- by the time Barry scored we should have been at least 3 goals to the good.

Williams will be fine as he gets to play at higher level and with better players. We need to slap our attackers out of that state of funk.

Agree up to a point, but Williams' relative lack of pace has been exposed at times and this was another example of that. It's possible for CBs to do well in the Prem without being speed merchants (e.g.Sami, John Terry) but they need to be special players in other respects. That's a high bar for Williams to get over. Not saying he won't, but I am saying it's not nailed on yet.

Let’s wait and see before we bin him. I think we’re far too eager to write off players who don’t immediately look the deal , especially from our own ranks. I mean long did Lallana take to make it to the top level, as an example? Ian Wright?

Oh, I certainly agree it's far too soon to even consider writing him off - that's way OTT - but I do think we need reinforcements in that position if we can find the right quality and value for money.

Or they need to not be playing in a system that has their starting point on the half way line. Not being lightening fast isnt a huge problem for most defenders as they arent trying to defend 30 yards of empty space behind them. It seems to me we have a choice we can only play players who fit into the system or adapt the system to the players.

If we arent signing any centre backs then Williams is going to play a number of games before the end of the season, i dont think hes going to develop into 100m sprinter during that period.
