So I've always been extremely anti-non nationals playing for a country. But with international football seemingly becoming less and less relevant in the world (players retiring at 28 etc), and the global village becoming more and more open to all from anywhere. Is it time to accept citizenship as nationality? Several other countries have used it to their advantage already Deco, Ozil, Podolski etc and I don't believe Owen Hargreaves had ever set foot on English soil when've first played for England Buuuuuuut he had British parents, how do you stand in this situation where a player has lived in a country long enough to be a national. Should they then be allowed to play for that countries national team IF of course they havnt played for the country of their birth?
I would like to take the moral high ground (well I did when it was Almunia) but is it now a case of everyone else is doing it why can't I? And let's face it.......arteta is actually quite good.

Gerrard has been trying to persuade him, and I'm all for it.

But I've actually given up on England until Capello stops fucking everything up.
Yeah I'm not really talking about England exclusively mate. I think I'm of a mind that you should be able to choose if you are a national nowadays. Oh I dunno....

I can understand the Hargreaves type of situation completely, but the Arteta thing is stretching things a bit. He doesnt even have an English granny

No chance.

I'll accept players who claim to be English but not just those who are eligible.

Plus, whats the point of having 'foreigners' in the national team when all the bleating and changing of Premier League rules is about getting more English kids through.

I do agree with some of the sentiments, but I dont think it's quite so straightforward.

I'd have thought that the main criteria would have been nationality, not ancestry.

If someone is foreign born and then becomes a citizen and then WANTS to play for his adopted country, I personally find that far more admirable than a foreign-born UK citizen who wants to play for his nation of birth which he has no connection to now.

Sorry to piss on your parade, but Ozil was born in germany!

I really am torn on this one.

I know this sounds daft but accent means a lot to me to make it more acceptable.

If a foreign player has been here since they were a kid and sounded almost English it would sit better with me rather than a fella being interviewed after an England game with a thick foreign accent.

I used to hate it when Rusedski and Lenox Lewis used to have thick Canadian accents.

I am really undecided on this

We've been fielding english players for years and none of us have a problem with it. It makes us better. And all jokes aside, if it adds a bit of flair and much needed creativity then why not. Arteta is a great player. If you guys are willing to have a foreign manager then why not a foreign player. Roy Keane said during the week that he couldnt see arteta standing in the line up and singing the national anthem, but he stood in Irish line ups as captain alongside players like matt holland and kevin kilbane, who probably hadnt a notion where in Ireland they actually were never mind singing in the irish language for the anthem.

Lennox Lewis was at least born in England right?

Anyway...

My criteria:

* Players born in the nation
* Players raised in the nation
* Players with close ancestral connection to the nation (Grandmother/father)

The whole talk about Almunia or Arteta playing for England is because they never get picked by Spain. That's a terrible reason to play for England. If they had to pick between playing for Spain or England they'd jump at the chance of representing Spain, naturally.
For instance I can excuse certain French players, that are in the same situation, for representing African nations because they actually have roots there.

Yes, I agree. Accent is key here.

The little Englanders will not like this one bit!
Ireland's team at Italia 90 had as many, if not more, English born players in the side then Irish born lads but I didn't give two fucks then and I don't now.

Yeh but there's a difference between using people from the British Isles and the Iberian peninsula

I meant Lennox. This is what happens when people don't use quotes.

Fox is right. His post does sound daft.
ha ha, come on can you imagine an England player at a press conference sounding like Capello himself, it is just not right

Digger of course did not come to England until he was a kid of about 10 I think, I had no problem with him playing for England.

I don't think it should be allowed. It's a joke that so many nations have random Brazilians playing for them.

Not really. Ireland using English players with UK passports is exactly the same as England playing Spanish players with UK passports.

Ireland use English born players with Irish parents or grandparents not players from a totally different country with no link at all to the country apart from spending a few years here. Not comparable in the slightest

We played Cascarino for years Sunny.
He has no known Irish relatives at all.
How did they get round the criteria with that one ?

Ah:

Cascarino was born in England but represented the Republic of Ireland, qualifying through his Irish grandfather. However, he later revealed that his mother told him in 1996 that she was adopted and therefore no blood relative to the grandfather

he lied then

You've excelled yourself, again.

How English do they have to sound? And who tests their accents? Capello? He can barely speak English himself.

In fairness, if my son was that shit as football, I would tell him he was adopted too.
