Arsenal - the fart that doesn't smell

Just read that Arsene Wenger stormed off after the final whistle v Bayern, saying he needed some space.
He was later found in the Arsenal trophy room! 😉

Arsenal are a lesson for us.
The philosophy that we have embarked on matches theirs, only they are years ahead.
But it hasn't worked/isn't working for them.
They need to start again. I can think of about 6 players I'd keep, the rest should be expendable.
As good as Wenger has been for them, I'm not sure he would be right for the rebuild job, his stubbornness has cost them in the past.
For years they had no experience and no steel. Some players haven't come on as expected.
We need to learn from this.

It's quite staggering that someone who managed one of the best teams in Premiership history, which included strong, combative players throughout its core, could be so blind to what his team is lacking, or so desperate to prove that he can win things in a different way.

Apparently Wenger's marriage is in trouble (again), that's partly the reason he's become very aloof with his colleagues and thoroughly ratty with the media.

I hadn't realised he married Marc Overmars?

I heard he is having an affair, he keeps his mistress in the trophy room and thats why he doesnt want anybody to go in there

It seems it's quite common amongst all managers to do so, I dare say having an unshakeable belief & ego are a prerequisite to getting into the top tier of football management.

Off the top of my head I can only think Ferguson & Moyes who are not only prepared to change a system & personnel on a regular basis, but will actually use that as a tactic to disarm other teams. There's probably more, but I can't think of any certainly not in the Premiership anyway.

Tinkerer Benitez who seemed to worry more about the opposition than his own team?

I thought about that, but in a way, that very trait combined with his rotation at all costs philosophy, was the thing he refused to change.

Ferguson will stick with a winning side most of the time & only change that or the system should be need to, as will Moyes. Hence why when they do change it usually works as it's not expected despite them doing it on a much more regular basis than other managers.

I think in the season when Rafa was getting the tinkerer attention it emerged that Ferguson actually rotated his team more than him. Of course, the difference between us and utd is that they were bringing in quality players; rotation for us meant compromise.

for all their shitness i was surprised to see they've recently taken 13 pts from a possible 15 and are only 2pts off 3rd.

i don't know , for me that just highlights what a shit boring poor season this is because they're very average . Useless season this one has been , piss average standard bar utd and they haven't even had to fight too hard .

This has been a crap season, you're right.

Utd, who are fairly average, have faced no real competition for the title and the top four is made up of teams that are having poor seasons and contriving to give their spot away every other week.

And it's only really Suarez that is doing the amazing week in, week out.

In fairness, being married to Wenger must be hard work. She's probably been wanting the house decorated and new furniture for about 10 years.

Arsenal:
- post a nice profit
- will probably finish in the top 4 like they always do
- have massive cash reserves of £123 million
- fill their shiny new stadium every week despite charging ridiculous prices
- have made a new deal with the Emirates worth £150 million
- all the while playing some nice football

We would do well to emulate them instead of relying on handouts from passing strangers.

Yes, it's certainly a better 'problem' but you can see why their fans might be frustrated with that.

They have a big stadium, they are a famous old club, Champions League every year, and are based in London. So they should have no problem at all attracting players.

So IF they do have a lot of money, it must be annoying that they don't spend it and appear to have little ambition other than preserving their position.

I have always suspected though that their financial position and plan is not quite as it is assumed to be.
