Arsenal - the fart that doesn't smell

Anyone else find it amusing that this bunch of utter shitwipes were described as having another trophy-less season after going out of the FA Cup. All the press etc said it. Except for one thing – they are still in the Champions League. Are they really seen as being that shit now that they have already been labelled failures before they even play Bayern or anyone else?
Strange and quite funny I thought.
Hope they get humiliated.

Yep. And Wenger is now embarrassingly mad. That absurd rant yesterday, ending with the ludicrous exchange ('Why are you looking at me?' 'Er, because it's your press conference?'), was just the tip of the fast-melting iceberg.

That really was bizarre. What was perverse was that he was quite calm in the post-match press conference following the Blackburn defeat after a barrage of negativity, and then he goes mad days later about it in an unrelated press conference. I've always respected what he's done at Arsenal, but you do have to assume that he's losing it. The players will struggle to respect someone who can go off the rails quite so easily.

The reason he was so agitated was that there was an article that appeared on Sat/Sunday, stating that he had been offered a 2 year extension to his contract.

He contends that the article is untrue and was just written to wind Arsenal fans up.

I'm not really bothered about Wenger or Arsenal, but if a paper prints bullshit about someone, they have every right to be fucked off.

It was a still a bit strange, though, that the article that wound him up so much claimed that the board was behind him and wanted to ensure he'd stay. There have been far worse reports than that! Maybe he has other plans...

On a major Arsenal site something like 85% wants him sacked. He's losing the fans and the plot.
The rant yesterday was bizarre.

They're always supposed to be spending big but in the end they dont.
Most Arsenal fans I know have given up, and dont believe they'll get 4th.

In a way it would have helped him if the team HAD missed out on the top four a few years ago. At least that would have forced him to sharpen his focus and shake up the club. Instead they seem to have settled into the idea of being in the top four so snugly they no longer seem to know what really matters.

That's rather odd, since they're only 4 points behind Spurs, have a much friendlier schedule (only tough games are Spurs, Everton and Man Utd) and don't play any of the bruisers under Allardyce/Pulis. Spurs, on the other hand face Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City, as well as the likes of West Ham and Stoke - masters of slugging balls high into the box, which Spurs aren't that great at defending against.

I feel sorry for him. Arsenal have one of the lowest net spends in the league over the last god knows how many years, but he's still kept them fairly competitive. I still think he's one of the best managers in the game.

Any idea who they feel they should replace him with?

Gooner fans are fucking idiots. And I know 'cos I've got a few in my family.

If Wenger does get sacked then I hope Chelsea/Utd/City don't get Wilshere

As the very perceptive Russian commentator just said, Bayern is a team with a lot of arrogance. Sometimes it helps them, but sometimes it leads to loss of concentration when they simply don't respect their opponent. This is what happened after 0:2 - Arsenal were so limp and lifeless that Bayern dropped their own level too. Only at the end of the half they created another goal-scoring chance (they are drilled always to start and finish strong, it's an automatic thing for them).

I'm sure Arsenal will try to salvage some "pride" in the 2nd half, but really there is nothing to salvage. Even if Bayern stop playing and Arsenal somehow make it 2:2, this tie is over almost before it started. It's a mismatch.

No mate, sorry.

That's the thing though isn't it?
All well and good getting rid of Wenger but who do they replace him with?
I'm busy chatting to a Gooner cousin of mine while the games on and asked him the same question and his answer is anybody.

If there's anything to be learnt from us or Chelsea for that matter, not the easiest thing to just change managers and expect immediate results.

Arsenal are a lesson for us.
The philosophy that we have embarked on matches theirs, only they are years ahead.
But it hasn't worked/isn't working for them.
They need to start again. I can think of about 6 players I'd keep, the rest should be expendable.
As good as Wenger has been for them, I'm not sure he would be right for the rebuild job, his stubbornness has cost them in the past.
For years they had no experience and no steel. Some players haven't come on as expected.
We need to learn from this.

Trying to play good football doesn't mean we've embarked on the same blueprint though, playing football is the fundamentals of the game, for the purists anyway. Give us time to get the defensive side right. I agree though, I think time is running out for Wenger. He's a shrewd manager in terms of buying players, I've just always felt he's been obsessed with trying to match Fergie's ability to "win it with kids" all those years ago.

I think this idea that he's trying to win with a collection of kids and 'gems' he's managed to unearth for 100K from the French second division is a little exaggerated these days and no longer holds true.

In the last 2-3 years he has spent money - not enough - but he's spent and more often than not it's been on more experienced 'safe bets':

Arteta - 30
Giroud - 26
Cazorla - 28
Podolski - 27
Mertesacker - 28
Monreal - 26
Gervinho - 25
Koscielny - 27
Squillaci - 32

Gervinho aside, all were over the age of 25 when they were bought.

The problem is that by and large they are second-tier players and haven't been good enough replacements for the top class talent Wenger has struggled to keep a hold of.

Wenger doesn't really seem to take very many risks in the transfer market these days and prefers instead to go for known quantities. There is definitely no Vieira or Henry in that lot - not even a hint of a one.

I'm not sure how good the Arsenal youth system is at the moment, but he also doesn't seem to have four or five kids chomping at the bit to get into the side either. The teams that play in the cups these days are your usual mish-mash of first teamers, squaddies and known youngsters (like Ox and Coquelin).

It isn't just the style of football tho. Its the signing of types of players, age of players, physical make-up of player, the value of players etc. Coupled with style obviously.

In his entire time at Arsenal he's never bought one good defender. He inherited the best back 4/5 in British history, got Sol Campbell on a free, and has bought a succession of mongs ever since.

Not one good defender in 15 odd years, and it's cost him.

And if any one of you dare suggest Thomas Vermaelen is good, I'll eat your fucking screen with my fingers.

To be honest, I'm happy they are imploding. Quite apart from the fact that Piers Morgan is closer to a heart attack than ever, the further they fall means its one less club we need to catch.

It's bizarre innit. He's obviously a top manager (or at least was) but his choice of CB's has been his downfall, he hasn't a clue..............

Stepanovs
Cygan
Senderos
Vermaelan
Koscielny
Mertesacker
Squillaci

What a pack of shite. The only two decent CB's he signed were Campbell (Free) and Toure* (£150,000).

*Toure wasn't top class but a steal at £150,000

Kolo Toure was very good at Arsenal (also bought on the cheap and sold for a fortune). William Gallas was also very good.

But he has signed some right donkeys.
